Today in Politics: Will Sachin Pilot and Ashok Gehlot bury the hatchet in Dausa?

Indian Express11-06-2025
All eyes will be on Dausa on Wednesday, where a tribute ceremony to mark the 25th death anniversary for former Union Minister Rajesh Pilot will be held.
The meeting assumes significance as it comes days after Congress national general secretary Sachin Pilot met former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and invited him to the programme. This was the first such meeting in recent years and is being seen as a sign of thaw between them. The two leaders are often seen as power centres within the state Congress.
Gehlot shared the video of their meeting on X and recalled his long association with Rajesh Pilot. 'AICC general secretary Sachin Pilot invited me to the program organised on the 25th death anniversary of former Union minister Rajesh Pilot at his residence,' Gehlot said on X.
He said, 'Rajesh Pilot and I reached the Lok Sabha together for the first time in 1980 and were MPs together for about 18 years. We are still saddened by his sudden demise. The party also suffered a deep shock due to his departure.'
Sachin Pilot also shared the photo of the meeting and wrote on 'X', 'Met former chief minister Ashok Gehlot today. Requested him to attend the tribute ceremony organised in Dausa on June 11 on the 25th death anniversary of my father Rajesh Pilot.' Ties between Pilot and Gehlot were strained after the political crisis that hit the Ashok Gehlot-led government in 2020.
Jharkhand Congress to meet over SC welfare
Senior Congress leader Radha Krishna Kishore on Monday said that the Jharkhand unit of the party would convene a state-level meeting on June 11 to formulate a roadmap for the socio-economic development of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.
Kishore, also the Jharkhand finance minister, said that the alliance government in the state is committed to establishing an advisory council and a commission for the SC community soon.
'The Jharkhand Congress has convened a meeting with senior leaders and activists from the SC community to develop a strategy for the socio-economic development of the community in the state,' Kishore said while addressing reporters.
He said that Jharkhand Congress in-charge K Raju, co-in-charge Dr Bela Prasad, AICC's SC department chairman Rajendra Pal Gautam and state president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, among others, would participate in the meeting.
'The SC population in the state is approximately 50 lakh but their socio-economic conditions remain poor. Officially, the per capita income in Jharkhand is stated to be Rs 1.05 lakh annually. However, based on my observations, the per capita income of the poor and SC community is likely to be not more than Rs 60,000 annually,' he said.
KCR may appear before Kaleshwaram probe panel
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president and former Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao is likely to appear before the judicial commission probing the alleged irregularities in Kaleshwaram project Wednesday, party sources said on Tuesday.
KCR, sought to appear before the panel on June 11 instead of June 5, the day he was earlier summoned, they said.
The commission had last month issued notice to KCR for appearance as part of its ongoing inquiry.
The damage to the barrages of Kaleshwaram project was a major issue during the 2023 assembly elections in the state.
Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy recently announced that the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) has labelled the Kaleshwaram project, built at a cost of over Rs one lakh crore, to be 'probably the biggest man-made disaster in the country'.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan justifies remarks on film funding for women, marginalised

Thiruvananthapuram, Eminent filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Monday justified his remarks on the Kerala government's project to promote filmmakers from marginalised sections and said his statements were intended to empower them and improve their technical knowledge. Adoor Gopalakrishnan justifies remarks on film funding for women, marginalised He said he wanted women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST sections to continue in the film industry, and that's why he wanted them to undergo expert training in movie making and on how to utilise government funding. Speaking to reporters here, the veteran said he was not responsible for the interpretations made by the media about his statements during the government-organised film conclave on Sunday. He stressed that the films, being made with government finance, should have social relevance, aesthetic beauty, and technical excellence. Stating the need for those directing films to have knowledge about movie making, Gopalakrishnan said he wanted the filmmakers from the marginalised sections to be updated periodically and get proper orientation under experts. "The women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST category should be continued in the industry...I said for their good... My intention was their upliftment. I never tried to picture them in a poor light and viewed them as derogatory," he said. The 'Swayamvaram' director sought to know from the media what was objectionable in his remarks at the conclave. "I saw films by some of such filmmakers. I felt that there were issues due to the lack of orientation in their films. I specifically mentioned these two categories of directors, as they are financed by the government," he further said. Besides empowering them and giving them proper guidance, such filmmakers should also be given orientation on how to utilise public funds, he added. He also criticised singer Pushpavati for interrupting his speech during the conclave and said she had no connection with the cinema. When reporters asked about a police complaint lodged against him, Gopalakrishnan said, "Let them complain. They have all the rights to the same." Earlier in the day, Dalit activist Dinu Veyil lodged a complaint with the Museum police and SC/ST Commission against Gopalakrishnan, accusing him of insulting the entire backward community through his statements in the conclave. While Port Minister V N Vasavan extended support to Gopalakrishnan, saying that his words were misinterpreted, Higher Education Minister R Bindhu rejected the veteran's remarks and said the government has the responsibility to ensure justice to those who have been denied all these years. Gopalakrishnan has not criticised the government's stand, Vasavan said, adding that he just suggested exercising caution while disbursing funds in connection with the funding for filmmakers. Bindhu, however, said there is nothing wrong with the government providing funds for women and those belonging to the SC/ST community for expressing their creativity. Stating that filmmaking is an expensive process and there is nothing wrong with providing funds for the same by the government, the minister also said that it is one of the best projects of the cultural affairs department. Gopalakrishnan on Sunday said the current practice of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation providing ₹1.5 crore to prospective filmmakers from marginalised sections has not been producing the desired results. He said the aspiring filmmakers belonging to these sessions should first undergo proper training by experts before such funds are disbursed. Net Direct Tax Collection Surges After Reduction Of Corporate Tax Rates: Minister

New Delhi: The net direct tax collection saw strong growth in FY25 at Rs 22,26,375 crore, a 13.48 per cent year-on-year growth, as there has been an overall increase in collections after reduction of the corporate tax rates with effect from Assessment year (AY) 2020-21, the Parliament was informed on Monday. Since FY 2021-22, the growth in net direct tax collection has been robust, Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, told the Lok Sabha in a written reply. The total revenue impact on account of tax benefits extended to companies was Rs 88,109.27 crore and Rs 98,999.57 crore (projected) in FY 2022-23 and FY 2023-24, respectively. "The above tax benefits have the impact of making the corporates competitive and encouraging investment and, therefore, economic growth," the minister said. To encourage startups, initiatives taken have resulted in an increase in the number of startups claiming deduction under Section 80IAC of the Income Tax Act from 328 in AY 2022-23 to 877 in AY 2024-25. Further, the number of companies covered under Section 80JJAA in respect of employment of new employees has increased from 2,838 in AY 2022-23 to 3,644 in AY 2024-25, said Chaudhary. "The specific incentives are provided in the Income-tax Act through the Finance Bill. The initiatives taken have led to the generation of employment, an increase in tax revenue and overall economic growth," he noted. In order to create a globally competitive business environment for domestic companies, attract fresh investment and create employment opportunities, section 115BAA and section 115BAB were introduced in the Income Tax Act through the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Act, 2019. The impact of Section 115BAB is reflected in a significant growth of new manufacturing companies from 2,928 in AY 2022-23 to 7,185 in AY 2024-25, according to the minister. India's total gross direct tax collections (before adjusting for refunds) have more than doubled in the last five years, reflecting the high economic growth and improved tax compliance in the country, which has been encouraged with the introduction of the new digital technology.
