Fernando Alonso Left Steaming After Aston Martin Strategy Blunder

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso finished the British Grand Prix in P9 - taking home a solid points haul - though he was not impressed with the team's strategy decisions.
Despite finishing in the points, Alonso felt there were points left on the track and the team failed to capitalize on the various safety cars and changing conditions.
"It seems that P3 was very possible. I started P7, finished P9. Nico started P18, finished P3," he told the media after the race.
"So I think if you get it right, we know in these mixed conditions how good the result could be.

Alonso was furious with the team during the race as his teammate, Lance Stroll, managed to make up several positions by staying out during safety cars.
Those decisions weren't made from Alonso's side of the garage, which led to frustration on the radio.
His luck eventually turned his way after Alonso made the bold decision to pit for slick tires on lap 38 of the race. He was the first driver to take the risk and put on the medium tire.
At first, he was sliding around due to the track still being wet, but he eventually managed to make the switch pay off.
The decision to opt for the medium tire helped him move up from P14 to eventually finish ninth, although graining issues limited his ability to pass other cars.
After the race, Alonso was left wondering what could have been if he had been in a similar position to Stroll, who ran in third for a good part of the race.
"Yeah, I don't know, I would like to have his track position to be honest and try to feel the deg from that because I was P14 when everyone switches to dry, so I don't know," the Spanish driver said.
"I think he was with the soft at the end, so maybe we grained the tyres more than the others because I had the medium and I had some graining as well, so I imagine the soft was maybe even worse."
While dropping two positions from his starting spot is a bitter pill to swallow, Alonso did well to rescue some points.
For the second half of the season, Aston Martin will need to review its strategy to identify areas for improvement and avoid missing out on more points.

Twins slugger and Georgia native Byron Buxton becomes 4th participant in next week's Home Run Derby
Associated Press Minnesota Twins outfielder and Georgia native Byron Buxton was announced as the fourth participant in the Home Run Derby on Monday. The derby will take place next Monday, the night before the All-Star Game, at Truist Park in Atlanta. Buxton joins Nationals outfielder James Wood, Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh in the competition. Buxton, who has 20 homers this season, is from Baxley, Georgia, and was the second overall pick by the Twins in the 2012 draft. The 31-year-old Buxton becomes the eighth Twins hitter to take part in the derby. Justin Morneau won the event in 2008. New York Mets slugger and two-time winner Pete Alonso joined Philadelphia designated hitter Kyle Schwarber in electing to skip the event. Both told reporters Sunday about their decisions. Alonso was named a National League reserve for the All-Star Game in a season when he's hit 20 homers. He won the Home Run Derby in 2019 and 2021. It wasn't held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 'I'm not necessarily called this year to do it. I love the event. It's a sick event. I just didn't really feel motivated to do it this year," Alonso said, according to 'I just figured I'd take a break, use the break as recovery and get back at it, help the team win in the second half.' Although he's not participating this summer, Schwarber left the door open to taking part next season when the All-Star Game is held in Philadelphia. Schwarber has 27 homers this season and made his third All-Star team. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Nico Hulkenberg's Underdog Story Is Exactly What F1 Needed
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Fifteen years, 239 lights out, and 42 retirements into his career, Nico Hulkenberg is a Formula 1 podium finisher. As sheets of rain coated the track surface and sprayed visors, the 37-year-old Kick Sauber driver managed to hold onto a third-place position at Sunday's 2025 British Grand Prix. And while the result obviously matters, it's how he scored it that is just as important. Getty/Anadolu If you had told Hulkenberg on Friday that he would be standing on a podium step listening to 'God Save the King' in two days' time, he probably would have laughed. He finished 17th in the second free practice session and 15th in the third. The team's junior driver, Paul Aron, stood in for Hulkenberg in FP1, meaning shortened track time for the No. 27 driver. Saturday's qualifying session didn't bode any better with him saying, 'Quite frankly, we just didn't have the pace to make it through.' Hulkenberg lined up in the 19th grid slot come Sunday's main event; last as Franco Colapinto's Alpine never left the pit lane. But in a rapid recovery drive in the wet, the German driver managed to crawl his way to the top of the leaderboard. By lap seven—after a handful of cars gave up their starting positions in favor of exchanging intermediate tires for slicks on a drying track and a series of rookies slid and crashed—Hulkenberg had secured 10th. That finishing position alone would have been one of his better races of the 2024 season. But he didn't stop there. As the skies opened and lap 14 brought out the safety car, a flash of neon green could be seen near the front of the field in fifth. Max Verstappen's spin on lap 21 allowed for Hulkenberg to clinch fourth, and 14 laps around the track later, he successfully picked off Lance Stroll to take third in a clean lunge forward. He managed to keep Lewis Hamilton, who was aiming to turn 15 Silverstone podiums into 16, and Verstappen at bay in fourth and fifth. Getty Going into the 2025 British Grand Prix weekend, there were clear podium contenders: It was a Ferrari vs. McLaren duel, with a slight chance of Mercedes entering the mix. Hamilton snatched the top spot in the first free practice session of the weekend, his teammate Leclerc went fastest in FP3, and Lando Norris, who won the race, slipped ahead to take FP2. Even as Verstappen's Red Bull showed the unpredictable was possible after a pearl-clutching qualifying lap placed him comfortably on pole, a splash of chartreuse up front wasn't in the cards. While Hulkenberg's race involved a whole lot of luck, it was his patience that paid off, paired with a certain brand of scrappy racing resilience. It was the kind of back-of-the-pack turned podium performance that, like any good underdog story, reminds fans why they fell in love with racing in the first place. Sometimes it's really easy not to be romantic about racing, especially in eras where teams with massive talent pools and budgets dominate the competition. Halfway through the season, weekends can often feel like a drag of laps that blur together into one string of speed. But other times, you sit back, slack-jawed, and ask: 'How can you not be romantic about 20 cars driving in odd shapes?' Sunday was one of those days. Despite a title battle, this season hasn't provided too many starry-eyed moments. A 37-year-old racing driver in an inferior car holding up a third-place trophy is enough to get the waterworks going—even if that trophy is made of Lego bricks. Getty/MI News Although entering the sport through a traditional route, he's had a not-so-traditional career while in the motorsport series: competing for eight teams since 2010, snagging pole position in his rookie year, and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans driving for Porsche in 2015. Despite proving himself as a racer's racer, Hulkenberg holds some of the less-than-desirable stats in the sport, including the second-most points without a win and the most starts without a win. But he's also shown serious pace this season. He's scored more points (31) than both Red Bulls (29) in the last four races. Hulkenberg pulled out a cinematic moment that rivaled the F1: The Movie storyline and might just prove to movie-turned-grand prix converts that the sport is also capable of tiny, magical moments. Waiting 15 years for those moments—or seeing a recovery drive in the wet once a season—only makes them that much sweeter. Hulkenberg, exhausted and smiling, summed it up nicely: 'One of the best days of my career.' Got a tip? Email us at tips@

Inter Miami Reportedly in Talks With Lionel Messi's World Cup Teammate
There might be even more Argentinian flair on Inter Miami soon. The MLS club has begun talks with Atletico Madrid about a possible transfer deal involving midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, soccer insider Fabrizio Romano reported Monday. De Paul, 31, is entering the final year of his current contract. If De Paul and Atletico Madrid are unable to agree to an extension in the coming weeks, the Spanish club will seek to move him in a transfer, ESPN reported. But there might be some disagreement within Atletico Madrid about taking that approach as manager Diego Simeone would like the club to keep De Paul for at least another season, ESPN added in its report. De Paul has been one of the top midfielders in La Liga as of late. After completing his fourth year with Atletico Madrid, De Paul was named to the 2024-25 La Liga Team of the Season. He scored three goals over 53 total matches for his club team this past season and has 14 goals in 187 career caps for Atletico Madrid. As for his international career, De Paul has become a key player for Argentina over the last few years as well. He started for Argentina in its 2022 FIFA World Cup final win over France and its 2024 Copa America final win over Colombia. He has two goals in 78 caps for Argentina. If Inter Miami were able to land De Paul, it would likely need to clear up a Designated Player slot. Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba currently occupy those three spots for Inter Miami, which is the maximum amount of Designated Players a team can have. With Busquets turning 37 in July, his possible retirement would seem to be the most likely option for Inter Miami to open up a Designated Player spot, according to CBS Sports. While Busquets might be on the outs, adding De Paul would be another player with ties to Messi to join Inter Miami since his arrival in 2023. Alba and Luis Suarez played with Messi with Barcelona before joining him at Inter Miami, while there are eight other Argentinian players on the MLS club's roster. After winning the Supporters' Shield last season in its first full year with Messi, Inter Miami is seeking to go back-to-back and take the next step as a club. Following its disappointing Round 1 exit in the MLS Playoffs last year, Inter Miami is sixth in the Eastern Conference standings, but it only trails first-place FC Cincinnati by 10 points with four games in hand. Inter Miami was also eliminated in the Round of 16 in the FIFA Club World Cup. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
