Mina The Hollower to Shinobi: Best free game demos you can play right now
With subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus offering a vast library of games, it's easy to forget about the bitesize demos available on stores for upcoming titles.
While they perhaps aren't quite as common as they used to be, demos are the perfect way to see whether a game is worth your cash and attention – especially if you're on the fence about a particular title or genre.
It might be the relatively dry summer slate, or some good fortune in the air, but there have been an abundance of great demos released over the past month. So, if you're in the market to try something new, here's some of the best free tasters up for grabs.
The studio behind Shovel Knight returns with another retro-inspired throwback, albeit this time a love letter to the Game Boy Colour era. Mina The Hollower was already one of 2025's most anticipated titles, but this demo will show you why. Aside from the sumptuous visuals, the standout is the movement itself – with Mina possessing a very satisfying dig mechanic to bury under walls and catapult to far away platforms.
Unlike its clear Zelda inspirations, the combat is surprisingly tough too. If you're interested, the demo is available now on Nintendo Switch but only until August 21, 2025. The full game launches across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC as well on October 31.

This role-player from Square Enix might look reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default, and Live A Live with its HD-2D style, but gameplay wise it has a stronger action focus with real-time battles. As such, it's perhaps the most accessible of all – that is, if you can stomach location names like 'Philabieldia' and 'Kingdom Of Huther'.
While save data from the demo will not carry over to the final version, it's nevertheless worth checking out if you've been put off by the turn-based nature of the aforementioned titles. The Adventures Of Elliot is slated to launch in 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. However, the demo is only available on Nintendo Switch 2.
Ahead of its launch in September, this sci-fi action adventure takes cues from Zelda with its emphasis on unguided exploration. We played it earlier this year, and while we weren't sold on every aspect, it's still a fascinating and ambitious title which could click with those who have a particular affinity with Bloodborne or The Elder Scrolls.
The limited-time demo is available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC until August 28, ahead of the game's full launch on September 4, 2025.
The return of Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi in the same year may have been an odd coincidence, but based on their quality so far, it's even more surprising how well they're both shaping up. This Shinobi reboot is from the creators behind Streets Of Rage 4, another successful rejuvenation of an old IP.
Based on the demo, this might be even better. It's slick, flashy, and unlike Ninja Gaiden Ragebound, the levels have elements of Metroidvania-style exploration. The demo is available across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, ahead of its launch on August 29, 2025.
If you have some spare time, why not try a mech tactical role-player series which began in 1991? Super Robot Wars has accrued a hardcore fan base over the years for its amalgamation of mechs from different anime shows, and it might just find a new audience with this next entry. More Trending
The demo, which spans the entirety of the first chapter, is available across Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, ahead of the game's launch on August 28, 2025. Your progress can also be carried over to the final game.
An open beta might not technically qualify as a demo in the traditional sense, but few betas have been as popular as Battlefield 6. If you missed out on last weekend's debut, you can try the second beta across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC from Thursday, August 14 at 9am BST to Sunday, August 18 at 9am BST.
The second beta will include all the same maps and modes as before, with some new additions. These include one new map called Empire State, and two new modes in Rush (a staple of the series) and Squad Deathmatch.

Lost Souls Aside release date The launch of Lost Souls Aside is scheduled for Friday, August 29. This date was announced by the game's team on Twitter back in June, revealing the delay. It's expected that Ultizero Games will announce the exact release time closer to the date, though we can expect that it will be consistent across PS5 and PC. With a lot to offer, there's every possibility that Lost Soul Aside could become a modern classic on the PS5 as gamers look for their next dark fantasy adventure. The retailer kicked off the festive season with the launch of the video through its social media channels at 9am last November. But while fans still have a while to wait to see the final masterpiece starring Aimee Lou, one local, Chloe Granger, recently shared snaps of her hometown following the festive makeover - so, do you recognise it? Outside the local pub, the popular supermarket had placed several Christmas trees and a huge, rich green garland upon the entrance. The whole street was also covered in fake snow - and the light sky indeed gave it that crispy winter morning feel. After strolling down the local street, the resident said she was inspired by the decorations - despite it being one of the hottest weeks of the year. M&S reveals SIX different Christmas food adverts featuring comedy legend and music star Chloe - who lives in Hatfield - also shared a hilarious snap where TikTok users could see people walking around topless and in shorts, which made for a rather bizarre contrast. ''It definitely took a sec for my brain to make sense of what I was seeing,'' she chuckled. Chloe added she was ''very ready for the festive season and cooler weather now''. The jaw-dropping transformation of the sleepy town has since taken the platform by storm, racking up close to 570k views in just one day. As almost 45k people gave it a like, more than 190 flooded to comments, where one said: ''It's making me crave winter so much.'' Another chuckled: ''I'd be saying you can use my house as long as i can keep the decorations you put up.'' A third was stunned, writing: ''It's actually mental how these photos make it look like a crispy winter morning at sunrise.'' Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 will be missing one key feature
Gearbox has confirmed Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 will come with a number of downgrades in comparison to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. With the console's more powerful specifications, there was a hope the Nintendo Switch 2 would have greater feature parity when it comes to third party multiplatform games. And that is the case, but only up to a point. While there have been some impressive ports so far, especially Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, the biggest test is how current generation titles across the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S run on the hardware. Star Wars Outlaws looks set to be the first test subject, which is set to launch September 4 on the Switch 2. The second will be Borderlands 4, which is due to hit Nintendo's system three weeks after the other versions, on October 3, 2025. While the reasons behind the slight delay are unclear, all signs suggest developer Gearbox has had some trouble getting it to run on Switch 2 the same way as it does on the other consoles. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford previously confirmed the Switch 2 version will not support 60fps like other platforms. 'It was important to us to not cut anything and to support cross-play across other platforms,' Pitchford posted on X when asked about the frame rate on Switch 2. 'So, no. It'll be mostly around 30fps, with some dips in some intense moments heavy combats or if hosting a multiplayer game in handheld mode.' But in the official FAQ for Borderlands 4, fans have spotted another caveat specific to the Switch 2 version, namely that it won't support split-screen co-op. 'Switch 2 players will have the same exciting Borderlands 4 experience as other platforms minus the split-screen option, and yes, it will have full cross-play with Epic, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S,' the website reads. More Trending Borderlands 4 on the Switch 2 will also have full mouse support, making it one of the first online shooters to support the new Joy-Cons in that way. For anyone who played Borderlands 3 on the original Switch, this might not come as a surprise. That also had local co-op removed but it didn't support crossplay for online co-op either – so Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 does have the latter, at least. While some level of compromise is to be expected considering the Switch 2 is less powerful than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it's still a disappointing sign that the console might continue to have noticeably worse versions of third party titles. For now, the most bankable Switch 2 ports might be titles which were released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, such as Elden Ring and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Persona 3 Reload, which are all set to launch on Nintendo's console in the near future – although only Persona has a release date so far, on October 23.
