Kolkata: EC would set up over 1 lakh polling booths across the state for the 2026 assembly elections, said Bengal chief electoral officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal on Tuesday. He said there were around 81,000 booths at present, but with EC's decision to have a maximum of 1,200 voters per booth, the number was expected to go up by over 22,000.
There would be 309 booths at the Kaliganj bypoll, which will be held on Thursday, Agarwal said, adding the number of booths had to be increased from 261.
Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had at a recent meeting in Delhi decided to cap the number of voters at 1,200 per booth. The poll panel wants voters to be able to find their booths within a kilometre or two. Consequently, the number of EVMs and VVPATs to be used will also increase.
Bengal now has 7.6 crore total voters; 3.8 crore are male and 3.7 crore female. The number is expected to rise with EC pushing for a major voter enrolment drive from July. Booth level officers will be going door to door to help everyone aged 18 and above enrol on the voters' list. They will also make note of those who passed away or shifted homes, so that bogus voters are removed for the list.
The location of the additional 22,000 booths will be finalised by July.

Meetings will then be held with political parties so there are no objections later when polling is declared.
Consultations are ongoing with political parties and electoral registration officers (EROs) and sub-divisional officers (SDOs) on the matter. EROs are also holding talks with residents of multi-storied buildings where there are community halls, so that polling booths can be set up there, and also cater to nearby slums and housing societies. SDOs are looking for open spaces where booths can be installed for slum-dwellers.

'If Trump were president in 2022, there would be no war': Putin after Alaska meeting; US President says no deal with Russia over Ukraine conflict

President Donald Trump greets Russia's President Vladimir Putin Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. AP/PTI(AP08_16_2025_000011A) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday claimed that he would not have invaded Ukraine if Joe Biden had not been in office, a remark seen as courting Donald Trump, even as US tariff threats persist. 'I'd like to remind you that in 2022, during the last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince my previous American colleague the situation should not be brought to the point of no return when it would come to hostilities,' Putin said after his nearly three-hour summit with Trump in Alaska. 'And I said it quite directly back then. 'That's a big mistake today, when President Trump is saying that if he was the president back then, there will be no war — and I'm quite sure that it would indeed be, so I can confirm that.' 'I think that, overall, me and President Trump have built a very good business-like [relationship],' he added. Trump has frequently expressed the belief that Putin would not have initiated the invasion had he been president in 2022, but he did not appear to engage with the dictator's provocation on Friday. Ahead of the meeting in Alaska, Trump, while in his flight, told Fox News that this Ukraine war is Biden's war and he was the one who screwed up. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "I'm not doing it based on history, based on anything else — I'm doing it based on a deal. If we make a deal, great. If I see that there's no hope of making a deal, I'm out of there... This isn't my war. This is Biden's war. Biden screwed this up..." Putin said. Trump subtly reminded Putin that he would not engage in any business dealings with Russia until the Kremlin ceased its three-year war on Ukraine, highlighting the US' leverage. 'We … have some tremendous Russian business representatives here, and I think everybody wants to deal with us. We've become the hottest country anywhere in the world in a very short period of time,' he said. 'We look forward to dealing — we're going to try and get this over with. '… We'll have a good chance when this is over.' Trump said that he and Putin did not reach an agreement to resolve Moscow's war in Ukraine, though he characterized the meeting as 'very productive.' 'There were many, many points that we agreed on,' Trump said at a joint press conference with Putin. 'I would say a couple of big ones that we haven't quite got there, but we've made some headway. So there's no deal until there's a deal.'

YSRCP stresses need for accountability in parties

Guntur: YSRCP State coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy asserted that the world draws inspiration from India's technological advancements, positioning the country as a global leader. He addressed party members at the Central office in Tadepalli on Friday and emphasised India's rapid progress across all sectors while underscoring the collective responsibility to preserve nation's culture, heritage and history. He highlighted the alarming mechanisation of systems in India, where political parties are increasingly shirking accountability. He stressed that true leadership demands unwavering responsibility to the people, insisting that every promise made must be fulfilled. Recalling the legacy of late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, he noted that YS Jagan Mohan Reddy founded the YSRCP on principles of values, credibility and accountability, guiding the party forward with integrity. 'YS Jagan consistently advises against making unfeasible promises and advocates for maintaining healthy systems,' Reddy affirmed, criticising the prevailing trend in the State where systems are exploited for short-term gains and any promise is given to seize power, only to be discarded irresponsibly once in office. Delving into electoral concerns, Sajjala pointed out the growing perception that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can be manipulated, leaving public doubts unanswered. In Andhra Pradesh, he revealed significant discrepancies in the voting process, including a 12.5% difference between the initial polling day percentage and the final figures, amounting to over 50 lakh votes, with no accountable system to address these queries.

Time for states to reclaim federal rights legally: CM

Chennai: The time has come for states to reclaim federal rights constitutionally, said chief minister M K Stalin , accusing the Union govt of snatching the powers of states in key sectors, including education and health. Delivering his Independence Day address after hoisting the tricolour at Fort St George on Friday, Stalin said that at a time when states working closely with people need more funds and autonomy, the Union govt was doing the opposite by snatching away powers. "State govts are forced to depend on the Union govt due to the discrimination in devolution of funds, policies, and court judgments," he said. Such constant struggles of getting basic rights and funds through arguments and legal battles do not bode well for a federal country, Stalin added: "This will also hinder the state's growth and national progress. Only when states grow independently and distinctively will the country truly develop, he said.
