Bundesliga to have longer games starting from this year; Here's why
Germany's top men's league is the latest to follow a trend set by the 2022 World Cup and the English Premier League by measuring the exact time taken up by events like red cards, penalties and injuries, and adding that amount on at the end of each half.
We currently have just under 60 minutes of net playing time (with the ball in play), which will probably increase somewhat, said Knut Kircher, the German refereeing body's managing director of sports and communication, in comments reported Tuesday by German agency dpa.
The new Bundesliga season starts Aug. 22 but the changes have already taken effect in the men's second and third tiers. There's been a backlash against some decisions.

Nick Woltemade Transfer: Claudio Pizarro Explains Why Bayern Munich After After 'Special' Stuttgart Forward
The Nick Woltemade to Bayern Munich transfer rumours might be progressing with the same steam but there's still some room left before the deal can be called 'dead'. Though Bayern aren't willing to match Stuttgart's asking price for the young striker, things can change before the transfer window concludes. While Bayern's interest in the young German is concrete, some critics haven't managed to wrap their heads around the extravagant interest from the Bundesliga champions. Before the start of the German Super Cup in Stuttgart, former Bayern striker Claudio Pizarro was asked about what makes Woltemade such an interesting player for Bayern. Pizarro is one of the top-scoring players in Bundesliga history, spent the finest period of his career with Bayern. Being a Peruvian in the Bundesliga, Pizarro is well aware of the dearth of traditional No. 9s in Germany. Seeing Woltemade who incredible promise, Pizarro knew that Bayern would not want to miss out on the opportunity of signing such a talent. "First for Bayern that he's German, of course, when a German player is doing well then Bayern is like okay the satellites are on. I know him really well, I played with him when he was 17 in Bremen and I could see how he improved and I think that's something special. He was learning a lot in the first year and then suddenly last year he did a great job and I think there's still space that he can learn more for that, so I think he's a good player," Pizarro said. When asked about the lack of top quality strikers in Germany in recent times, Pizarro sees a potential in Woltemade that can finally bridge this gap. "We see the history, the German strikers were always tough, big guys scoring a lot of goals and in the last years you didn't see that much, so I think it's going to be something special to get a player like that again in the German team. He has to learn still because he's really big, but sometimes he doesn't use his body like he used to or score many goals with the head, but as I said, he still needs a little bit of time to improve in some things, but I think he's a great player," Pizarro

ICC Women's World Cup 2025: Australia star Alyssa Healy acknowledges India's spin threat
Batting stalwart Alyssa Healy has acknowledged that Australia will have to negotiate the spin challenge in a big way to stake its claim to the World Cup for a record-extending eighth time in the Indian subcontinent. The star wicketkeeper-batter will be the one to watch out for when the showpiece event begins in India and Sri Lanka next month as the Southern Stars aim to retain the title they won in New Zealand in 2022. Healy gave a preview of what to expect in the global event when she blazed away to an unbeaten 137 as Australia A picked up a consolation nine-wicket win against India A in the third one-dayer in Brisbane. Though Australia A lost the series 1-2, Healy stood out in the opener's role by emerging as the highest run-getter of the series. She had struck a 91-run knock in the previous game, once again displaying her mastery against the India A spin attack that had the likes of Radha Yadav, Minnu Mani, Tanuja Kanwar, and Prema Rawat, who did not play the third match. 'They've (India A) got a really spin-heavy attack and we're going to have to play a lot of that throughout the World Cup as well, a lot of the middle overs will be spin-biased,' Healy told Australia A was more determined on Sunday as it made a mockery of the spin attack to finish the match in less than 28 overs by chasing down a modest 217-run target for the loss of just one wicket. Australia A coach Dan Marsh too felt that Healy's performance on Sunday places her in a good space ahead of the World Cup in India. 'Alyssa batted well today. All pre-season she's been looking good and it was just nice to see her get some match practice and put that into place heading into India,' Marsh said. 'She'll be really happy with her two weeks (with Australia A), will have a nice little rest at home now and be ready to go to India,' added Marsh.

R Ashwin Drops Bold Remark Before Asia Cup Squad Announcement: 'Jaiswal Gets A...'
Last Updated: Ravichandran Ashwin has questioned Shubman Gill's place in T20I squad for Asia Cup, highlighting Yashasvi Jaiswal as a strong contender for the opener spot. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that there is a question over Test skipper Shubman Gill's place in the T20I squad for the Asia Cup, but with Yashasvi Jaiswal being the backup opener for the T20 World Cup last year, he will automatically find a place in the squad. Ashwin has admitted that selectors find themselves in a tricky position as far as picking the second opener is concerned. In India's last T20I series against England, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened the batting, but neither Gill nor Jaiswal were part of the squad, having been rested after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. 'There are a few talking points regarding the Asia Cup. The first question that comes to everyone's mind is whether Shubman Gill fits into the T20 plans because in the last World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal was the backup opener," Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel. 'So Jaiswal automatically gets a kick-in. Rohit Sharma is not going to be a part of that team, so Jaiswal automatically gets a look-in. Now, who is going to be that other opener? Shubman Gill had an outstanding series," Ashwin added. Iyer Earlier on Saturday, August 16, India received a boost when reports emerged that skipper Suryakumar Yadav had cleared a fitness test. Jaiswal made his T20I debut for India against the Windies in August 2023. In the last two years, he has played 23 T20Is and scored 723 runs at a strike rate of 164.31 with a best score of 100. Jaiswal has emerged as a key cog in the wheel for his IPL team Rajasthan Royals. He has scored 2166 runs in 67 games at a strike rate of 152.85 with 15 half-centuries and two centuries. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
