Netflix horror with near perfect rating 'so terrifying it taps into everyone's deepest fears'
With a near-perfect 98 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Babadook is a 2014 indie psychological horror film that has achieved cult classic status in the years since its release.
Based on Jennifer Kent's 2005 short film Monster, The Babadook is written and directed by Kent and marks her feature directorial debut. Starring the young Noah Wiseman as Samuel Vanek and Essie Davis in a powerful performance as Amelia Vanek, the actors are supported by Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West, and Ben Winspear, completing a stellar ensemble cast.
Currently streaming on Netflix, The Babadook is the story of a widowed single mother, Essie, who along with her son Sam, finds herself confronting a mysterious human-like monster in their home that refuses to go away.
It's reported that Kent began writing the film's screenplay back in 2009 with intentions of exploring the themes of grief, parenting, and the fear of madness.
Financing for the film came from Australian government grants and partially through crowdfunding. Filming took place in Adelaide, where the production team took care to shield Wiseman — who was six at the time — from the movie's unsettling themes. The titular monster and special effects were reportedly brought to life using stop-motion animation and practical effects.
The movie proved to be a success at the global box office, grossing $10 million against its budget of $2 million. Surprisingly, The Babadook didn't do well in its home country of Australia, grossing only a dismal $258,000. The movie first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014.
Critics were left floored by the film, with one saying it was: 'One of the strongest, most effective horror films of recent years - with awards-quality lead work from Essie Davis, and a brilliantly designed new monster who could well become the break-out spook archetype of the decade.'
While one critic said it's 'one of the smartest and most effective horror films in years', another wrote: 'This psychological thriller from gifted first-time filmmaker Jennifer Kent will have you climbing the walls simply by plumbing the violence of the mind. Brace yourself.'
Another reviewer lauded the film's director and said: 'Let a law be passed, requiring all horror films to be made by female directors.'
Yet another critical review of the film says: 'Manages to deliver real, seat-grabbing jolts while also touching on more serious themes of loss, grief and other demons that can not be so easily vanquished.'
Audience reviews for The Babadook follow in the same theme, with one viewer commenting: 'Excellent, suspenseful movie with incredible acting, especially from the child actor. This movie, at 10 years old already, will be a classic. The Rotten Tomato score is SPOT ON with 98%!'
While one viewer wrote: 'This is definitely one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. Not only was it terrifying, but it really made me care about the characters. I highly recommend it for horror fans!'
Another commented in caps lock excitement: "ONE OF THE MOST PERFECT MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN! This film was no joke! Although no jump scares, this movie has proven that you don't need cheep jump scares and gore to make a proper horror film. Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy is taking on one of his most poignant roles to date as he plays the head of a struggling school in a new Netflix film. The streamer has just released the official first look images for the film, which is a reimagining of Max Porter's Sunday Times bestseller, Shy. Set in the mid-90s, the film follows a significant day in the life of headteacher Steve (Murphy) and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them. The synopsis reads: "As Steve fights to protect the school's integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. "In parallel to Steve's struggles, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence." The film in question is Steve, which will air in select cinemas on September 19 ahead of its Netflix release on October 3. The cast also includes Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo and Emily Watson, as well as Roger Allam. Academy Award winner Murphy said he was drawn to Porter's writing, with the author also penning the scripts for Steve. He and Murphy previously collaborated on the stage adaptation of Porter's Grief is the Thing with Feathers and the short film All of This Unreal Time. On reading Shy for the first time, he told Deadline: "Max gave me that book in a proof edition before he finished it, and again it just broke my heart. "They're the sorts of things I love as a reader and as a performer, so I really wanted to do something with him." Netflix fans turn off 'incredibly disgusting' new comedy minutes in despite star-studded cast
It was created by a five-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Netflix viewers have reported switching off a brand new comedy film on the platform just minutes in, slamming it as "insufferable" and "incredibly disgusting." Released on the streamer today (August 13), Fixed follows a dog named Bull (voiced by Adam Devine) who discovers he's about to be neutered and has one last hurrah with his friends. He also intends to win over the show dog he is in love with next door, Honey (Kathryn Hahn) before his operation. The animated comedy was created by Genndy Tartakovsky, a five-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and the mind behind Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack. Netflix's synopsis reads: " From visionary director Genndy Tartakovsky comes Fixed, an adult animated comedy about Bull, an average, all-around good dog who discovers he's going to be neutered in the morning! "As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends as these are the last 24 hours with his balls! What could go wrong...?" Its glittering cast also includes Idris Elba as Rocco, Fred Armisen as Fetch and Bobby Moynihan as Lucky. However, despite the star power on board, it has failed to land with audiences right away. "Fixed genuinely is insufferable and I'm only like five minutes in," one viewer began, adding: "I genuinely hate this. This is just corny sex jokes. I don't wanna see an animated dog's b******* flap while he's humping a grandma's leg." Another viewer gave up after watching only the trailer, saying: "It seemed incredibly disgusting (like worse than Big Mouth) just from the three second clip I watched while hovering over the title. Will absolutely not be investigating further," while a third unimpressed Netflix fan shared: "I still wanna know HOW were the voice actors talked into doing this." Not every viewer had a visceral reaction to the film however. Jumping to its defence, one fan shared: "Just watched it. It's passable, wasn't as bad as the trailers made me think it would be but it's not a masterpiece by any means, great animation though." Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, Tartakovsky explained how the cast came to be: "Some of the material is a bit raunchy so we had to find people that were receptive to our sense of humor, and boy, did we. 'I remember a moment where Kathryn Hahn read the script and called us — she wanted her character to be as raunchy as the other guys. It was a great note. We then rewrote her character to be reflective of that idea and she absolutely killed it.'

'Incredible' Netflix film based on true events is leaving viewers in tears
The movie has recently joined Netflix's large library and a well-known and film critic has 'begged' viewers to add it to their watch list, praising it as as "incredible" true story Netflix is renowned for its vast library of films and TV series spanning a multitude of genres. "Now, even if you're not a fan of wrestling or sports at all, like me, this is a story everyone should hear." The TV and movie critic described it as "one of the best" true stories he has ever seen. Eccleston went on: "So make sure you get this film on your watch list. I actually beg you to check this one out." His TikTok clip has racked up 26y,600 views, 3,000 likes and more than 100 comments to date. One viewer, who has seen The Iron Claw, enthused: "That film is insane. I cannot believe it's true, it's amazing." Someone else who had seen the film was deeply touched, saying: "It's been on HBO part of their A24 collection btw! For anyone who has HBO. This movie broke me down and had me tearing on a plane. That ending." Sean Durkin, a Canadian-American film director and screenwriter, directed The Iron Claw.
