Players very eager to go to Namibia, says Assam men's team coach Saikia
Kolkata: It's not often in India that domestic sides embark on overseas tours to gain international exposure. Even if they do, it's mostly local teams that they play against on those tours outside the country.
So, when Assam leave for their Namibia tour on Wednesday — to take on Namibia men's national side for five one-day games as part of their pre-season training — it will be one of the rarest of overseas tours for any team in India. For Assam it's first-ever, as on their previous and only foreign tour in August 2018, they played against Sri Lankan club sides.
The 15-member squad, under the tutelage of Assam U19 coach Subhrajit Saikia, will be captained by young batter Denish Das on this African sojourn and was made battle ready with a six-day camp held at ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, from June 11-16.
"We have been playing those exposure matches within the country so far and now we're going to another country to play against a national team. It will be a big experience for the boys to gain confidence ahead of the domestic season. They're very eager to go to Namibia," Saikia told TOI from Guwahati on Tuesday, a rest day before they depart for the tour.
"In the camp we had 24 boys, and we focused on the 15 selected for the tour.

Ayushman Malakar is a young prospect, a U19 fast bowling all-rounder, who has been promoted to the senior side for this tour. Apart from him all the boys played domestic matches last season, so we have a pretty good squad. We did match simulation and played 40-over games during the preparatory camp since it's been pretty hot in Guwahati for the last few days," added the former first-class cricketer from Assam.
Expecting different conditions in the Namibian capital Windhoek, Saikia said his side has all bases covered.
"It's winter in Namibia now. So we are expecting the ball to move a bit there. We have four fast bowlers and three spinners. But whatever the conditions, we have the resources to overcome different situations," Saikia sounded confident of his wards.
Captain Das, meanwhile, will be one of the players to look forward to on this tour. He was the Ranji Trophy skipper last season in the absence of the most famous son of the soil Riyan Parag and the 23-year-old has led by example.
Wicketkeeper-batter Sumit Ghadigaonkar will be his deputy in Namibia.
"Denish (Das) came up with great knocks and I think he has a good prospect to become a very good player. But we always miss Riyan. We want him to be with us, but he is in the national set-up now. Actually, it's very good that without Riyan they are coming up with good performances for Assam and they think that they can be the next big name, like Riyan," said Saikia.
On a personal front, though Saikia is elated to coach the senior side on the tour, he will be happy to nurture the U19 boys again, once he comes back home. "I went to Bangladesh with the U19 team last year. So now going with a senior team to a different country, it will be a great learning experience for me. I hope I can learn many good things from this tour which I can apply with the youngsters and help them get to the next level," Saikia signed off with a promise to impart that knowledge to the age-group cricketers.
The schedule: Jun 21: 1st one-day match; Jun 23: 2nd one-day; Jun 25: 3rd one-day; Jun 27: 4th one-day; Jun 29: 5th one-day (all matches in Windhoek)

Rajasthan Cricket Association: A power struggle amid govt silence
1 2 Jaipur: The Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) is grappling with unprecedented turmoil as its govt-appointed ad hoc committee, tasked with conducting elections, has overstayed its tenure by over a year, a first in the association's history. On June 27, the panel, formed on March 28, 2024, will complete five tenures. Unlike the 2014–2017 period, when an ad hoc panel managed RCA affairs due to suspension by the Indian cricket board (BCCI) over Lalit Modi's controversial reappointment, the current crisis stems from political interference and committee infighting. Led by BJP MLA Jaideep Bihani, the committee is now plagued by internal rifts, with members accusing each other of power grabs and mismanagement. The infighting has reduced the six-member panel to a two-member team, raising questions about Rajasthan govt's silence despite its authority to resolve the crisis. Bihani, an MLA from Sriganganagar, wields significant influence within the committee due to his political stature. His position as a BJP legislator grants him leverage over other members, enabling unilateral decisions that have fueled dissent. Bihani's actions, such as suspending the Pali and Bikaner District Cricket Associations (DCA) and forming selection committees without proper procedure, have been criticized as authoritarian. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Four committee members, Dhananjai Singh Khimsar, Dharamveer Singh Sekhawat, Ratan Singh, and Harish Chandra Singh, have openly rebelled, accusing Bihani of using political clout to marginalize them and undermine RCA's democratic processes. They allege he has neglected meetings for months and made baseless match-fixing allegations against the Rajasthan Royals during IPL 2025, prompting the franchise to lodge complaints with the Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC) and other authorities. The state govt's inaction has drawn scrutiny, particularly as the ad hoc committee's prolonged tenure, originally set for three months with a subsequent extension, has delayed RCA elections indefinitely. "Bihani is from the ruling party but seems to have support from a central leader, openly confronting the sports minister/government. The ad hoc was created for reasons now happening. Three months have turned into five extensions, a mockery," said a source. Bihani, however, refuted the claims. "CM sir doesn't pay attention to cricket, so to say that I am getting his support is wrong. But yes, if I had done anything wrong while running RCA, he would have reprimanded me. The only interference there is, is from the Sports Council. I will comment on this tomorrow if the ad hoc panel gets an extension," Bihani told TOI. Meanwhile, former CM Ashok Gehlot also waded into the issue, criticizing the govt's silence and alleging on X that infighting in RCA had disappointed cricket lovers and made it challenging to organize the IPL. "Elections should have been held within three months, yet it's been one and a half years," Gehlot said, adding that during his son, Vaibhav Gehlot's tenure as RCA president, the association hosted international matches and initiated projects like a world-class stadium, which are now stalled. Sources attributed the delay in RCA elections to the "entry of too many politicians' sons". "Too many sons of politicians want to marry a single bride - RCA. So best is to avoid marriage. They don't want to do things in haste and repent later," a source said. eom Jaipur: The Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) is grappling with unprecedented turmoil as its govt-appointed ad hoc committee, tasked with conducting elections, has overstayed its tenure by over a year, a first in the association's history. Quinten Post's bombshell triggers NBA debate over Stephen Curry's injury fallout
Quinten Post's bombshell triggers NBA debate over Stephen Curry's injury fallout (Image Source: Getty Images) A key voice from the Golden State Warriors is speaking out after their tough playoff exit. But he's not breaking down plays or stats, he's focused on something much bigger. He's talking about the man at the center - Stephen Curry. His recent injury in Game 3 had ripple effects no one expected. One teammate's comment has got fans thinking: was Curry really the difference maker that could have flipped the result? The answer might be closer than it seems. Quinten Post points to Stephen Curry's absence as turning point On June 27, Warriors forward Quinten Post shared his thoughts on X, reflecting on the Golden State Warriors playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He said, 'I think within the organization, there's a belief we would've won that series if Steph [Curry] stayed healthy. I mean, you can't deny his impact... He just has so much gravity.' Post emphasized Curry's game-changing presence. He noted that Stephen Curry doesn't just score, his movement, gravity, and chemistry with teammates pull defenses apart. Post insisted that without Curry's injury in Game 3, when Stephen Curry bruised his knee, the whole dynamic of the series would've stayed in Golden State Warriors' favor. Fans and media have taken note of his bold claim. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Price for a 1-Day Walk-in Shower In 2025 Homebuddy Learn More Undo Who is Quinten Post and why he's speaking up Quinten Post, 25, joined the Golden State Warriors earlier this season.
