VIENTIANE: Authorities in Luang Prabang have unveiled an ambitious five-year development strategy (2026–2030) aimed at transforming the Unesco-listed town into a premier tourist destination that blends modern comforts with cultural integrity and environmental sustainability.
Deputy Governor of northern Luang Prabang province, Bounleua Sinxayvoravong told local media recently that the core of the plan is a sweeping improvement of tourism infrastructure and services designed to meet the expectations of both domestic and international travellers.
From upgraded hotels and guesthouses to enhanced logistics and hospitality standards, the initiative seeks to boost visitor satisfaction, encourage longer stays and drive repeat visits to the internationally acclaimed town.
The Laos-China Railway, which runs through the province, will be leveraged as a key transport route to drive the logistics and tourism industry.
Bounleua stated that the province will promote investment in tourism-related businesses and develop new attractions to expand choices for visitors and enhance their overall experience.
'A key component of the plan is the development of Ngoy township, a popular destination, into a model of eco-tourism that celebrates natural beauty while also promoting environmental conservation.'
'In addition, Luang Prabang International Airport will be upgraded to meet global standards, enabling better access to neighbouring countries such as China and Vietnam, as well as key markets with potential like Japan and the Republic of Korea,' Bounleua said.
The airport is set for a major upgrade under a public-private partnership. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently received prequalification documents from eight companies interested in bidding for the upgrade project designed as one of the key boosters to drive toruism in the region.
Another feature of the plan includes establishing a new transport link with Dien Bien province in neighbouring Vietnam, which will help boost cross-border travel and strengthen the tourism network across northern Laos, Bounleua added.
Recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995, Luang Prabang is famed for its blend of traditional Lao architecture, French colonial charm, ancient temples and scenic beauty along the Mekong River.
The town has long been the cultural and spiritual heart of Laos, attracting millions of visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and rich heritage.
The province welcomed more than two million domestic and foreign visitors in the first five months of 2025, representing a 129.44 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

MNRB shares jump 11pct on Q1 profit surge

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of MNRB Holdings Bhd jumped 11.18 per cent in morning trade after the reinsurance and takaful group posted an 82.7 per cent surge in net profit for the first quarter ended June 30, 2025 (1Q25). The counter opened 18 sen or 10.59 per cent higher at RM1.88 before briefly touching RM1.89. It was last traded at RM1.88 at press time with 1.19 million shares changing hand, its busiest day in over three months. Main Market-listed MNRB began the year at RM2.23, hitting a high of RM2.27 and a low of RM1.69. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen 33 sen, or 13.90 per cent, valuing the company at RM1.48 billion. The group said the stronger quarterly earnings were driven by improved underwriting performance, higher net investment income, greater contributions from associates and lower operating expenses. Quarterly revenue rose 13.76 per cent to RM975.56 million from RM857.58 million a year earlier, supported by higher insurance and takaful contributions across its reinsurance, general takaful, family takaful and retakaful operations. No dividend was declared. On its outlook, MNRB, which operates Takaful Ikhlas, said the newly imposed eight per cent service tax on financial services could marginally impact profitability in the family takaful segment through higher distribution and investment management costs. "The general takaful segment is largely not impacted by this development as the contributions are already subject to service tax," it said. Despite the potential headwind, MNRB said it remains confident in its long-term growth prospects and will continue to focus on balancing its portfolio across the reinsurance, takaful and retakaful segments.

France's July CPI stable at 1 pct: INSEE

PARIS, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- France's consumer price index (CPI) rose 1 percent year-on-year in July, unchanged from June, the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) said Thursday. INSEE explained that the stability in inflation reflected a sharper drop in energy prices, which offset the continued rise in the cost of services and food. Energy prices fell 7.2 percent year-on-year in July, driven mainly by a steep decline in gas prices. "Petroleum product prices fell at a slower pace than in the previous month, particularly for diesel and liquid fuels. In contrast, petrol prices dropped more sharply than in June," INSEE noted. With many French consumers preparing for summer holidays, service prices, including transport, rose 3.7 percent year-on-year in July. Food prices increased 1.6 percent year-on-year, marking their seventh consecutive month of acceleration, according to the institute. During the Governing Council meeting of the European Central Bank held in late July, Francois Villeroy de Galhau, governor of the Banque de France, said inflation remained under control in both France and Europe.
