Japan donates 1.5 billion yen in high-tech road maintenance equipment to boost Lao infrastructure

Japanese Ambassador Koizumi Tsutomu (left) gives a symbolic vehicle key to Minister of Public Works and Transport, Leklay Sivilay. - Vientiane Times/ANN VIENTIANE: The Japanese government has donated road and bridge maintenance equipment worth 1,500 million yen (US$69,424) to Laos to help improve the country's infrastructure and support sustainable road development. The funds were handed over on August 8 at the Road No. 8 Construction State Enterprise in Tanmixay village, Xaythany district, Vientiane, underscoring Japan's ongoing commitment to Laos' socio-economic growth. The equipment was provided by the government of Japan under the 2023 socio-economic development project. The event was attended by the Vice President of the National Assembly, Sommad Pholsena. Speaking on the occasion, the Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Koizumi Tsutomu, highlighted Japan's long-standing support for infrastructure development in Laos, including landmark projects such as the Second Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge, the Pakse Bridge, the Xekong Bridge, and the renovation of Wattay International Airport and Road No. 1 in Vientiane. He noted that these structures have gradually deteriorated over time and explained that, in response to a request from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the Japanese government had provided US$10 million for the procurement of a full set of heavy construction machinery. This equipment is intended to enhance and prolong the lifespan of roads across the country. Minister of Public Works and Transport, Leklay Sivilay, accepted the donation and expressed his gratitude. He said the ministry had requested the equipment, marking the second time it had received such assistance from the Japanese government. The goal is to repair and upgrade roads that have been damaged by severe weather, using modern, efficient and environmentally friendly machinery. Leklay pledged to use the equipment to its maximum potential for sustainable infrastructure development and to strengthen Laos' state enterprises. The equipment has been handed over to three state enterprises under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to enhance their operational capacity and help them become model state-owned enterprises in the fields of road survey, improvement, maintenance and construction, in order to gradually improve the quality of roads across Laos. - Vientiane Times/ANN

Rehabilitation work begins on three border posts between Lebanon and Syria

BEIRUT — The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced in a statement on Friday that it had begun rehabilitation work on three border posts between northern Lebanon and Syria that were destroyed by Israeli strikes both during and after last year's war. Arida, Abboudieh and Sabaa Qmar (which connects Qobeiyat to Wadi Khaled). "The ministry's technical teams, in cooperation with the relevant authorities, have begun setting up temporary border crossings to ensure the continuity of traffic and maintain the link between Lebanon and Syria," the ministry said. A temporary crossing has been built in Arida, restoring traffic "entirely" at that point and similar work is underway at Sabaa Qmar "to allow crossing while awaiting permanent solutions." A temporary crossing will be arranged at Abboudieh next week "to make it operational as soon as possible." The ministry said it had opted for these provisional solutions pending the completion of "comprehensive technical studies," which are being conducted in collaboration with "specialized consulting firms." The purpose of the studies, the ministry explained, is to ensure that the three new border crossings meet the standards and technical specifications "that prevailed before their destruction by the strikes." The ministry did not provide any information about the timeline for the future work. The Israeli army has increased its attacks against the Bekaa in recent days, targeting on Thursday a car that had been driving near the Masnaa border crossing with Syria and killing five people.

Work on bridge across Mekong River in Cambodia's Kratie province nears completion

The bridge will be open temporarily for motorcycles and family cars during the Pchum Ben Festival, or Ancestor's Day, in late September. - Instagram PHNOM PENH: Work on a China-funded bridge across the Mekong River in northeast Cambodia's Kratie province neared completion after two and a half years of construction, said a press release from Cambodia's Ministry of Public Works and Transport on Monday (July 7). A ceremony for connecting the final segments of the bridge was held on Monday, the press release said. The 1,761-metre-by-13.5-metre bridge, along with a 31.69-km connecting road, is being constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group under China's preferential loan. "By the end of June 2025, 96 per cent of the bridge construction has been completed," Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol said. According to Chanthol, the bridge will be open temporarily for motorcycles and family cars during the Pchum Ben Festival, or Ancestor's Day, in late September. The bridge is another fruit of close cooperation between Cambodia and China under the Belt and Road Initiative. "This project will importantly contribute to connecting Cambodia's interior transportation system, promoting the growth of transportation in the areas of agriculture, agro-industry and tourism in the northeastern provinces," Chanthol said. The project would contribute to promoting Asean connectivity and the Lancang-Mekong subregion connectivity, the official said. - Xinhua

Luang Prabang charts bold tourism vision to become regional standout

Kuang Si Waterfalls is one of Luang Prabang's most popular tourist attractions. Recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995, Luang Prabang is famed for its blend of traditional Lao architecture, French colonial charm, ancient temples and scenic beauty along the Mekong River. - Pixabay VIENTIANE: Authorities in Luang Prabang have unveiled an ambitious five-year development strategy (2026–2030) aimed at transforming the Unesco-listed town into a premier tourist destination that blends modern comforts with cultural integrity and environmental sustainability. Deputy Governor of northern Luang Prabang province, Bounleua Sinxayvoravong told local media recently that the core of the plan is a sweeping improvement of tourism infrastructure and services designed to meet the expectations of both domestic and international travellers. From upgraded hotels and guesthouses to enhanced logistics and hospitality standards, the initiative seeks to boost visitor satisfaction, encourage longer stays and drive repeat visits to the internationally acclaimed town. The Laos-China Railway, which runs through the province, will be leveraged as a key transport route to drive the logistics and tourism industry. Bounleua stated that the province will promote investment in tourism-related businesses and develop new attractions to expand choices for visitors and enhance their overall experience. 'A key component of the plan is the development of Ngoy township, a popular destination, into a model of eco-tourism that celebrates natural beauty while also promoting environmental conservation.' 'In addition, Luang Prabang International Airport will be upgraded to meet global standards, enabling better access to neighbouring countries such as China and Vietnam, as well as key markets with potential like Japan and the Republic of Korea,' Bounleua said. The airport is set for a major upgrade under a public-private partnership. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently received prequalification documents from eight companies interested in bidding for the upgrade project designed as one of the key boosters to drive toruism in the region. Another feature of the plan includes establishing a new transport link with Dien Bien province in neighbouring Vietnam, which will help boost cross-border travel and strengthen the tourism network across northern Laos, Bounleua added. Recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995, Luang Prabang is famed for its blend of traditional Lao architecture, French colonial charm, ancient temples and scenic beauty along the Mekong River. The town has long been the cultural and spiritual heart of Laos, attracting millions of visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and rich heritage. The province welcomed more than two million domestic and foreign visitors in the first five months of 2025, representing a 129.44 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
