If you are a Cinephile, you must be knowing, Guru Dutt wasn't just a filmmaker; he was poetry in motion. Born as Vasant Kumar Shivshankar Padukone on 9 July 1925, Dutt's cinematic world was layered with melancholy, lyrical storytelling, and emotional gravitas.
He is remembered for his iconic films like 'Pyaasa', 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', and 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand' which it was more than just stories. They were mirrors reflecting societal decay and the fragile human soul. His journey from Vasant to Guru
For those of you who don't know, he was raised in a Brahmin household in Karnataka, his early life was steeped in discipline, his father was a headmaster, and his mother was a teacher. A childhood accident changed his name, seen as a stroke of fate that would lead him toward greatness.
After briefly joining Uday Shankar's dance academy in 1942, he drifted into jobs until fate brought him to Prabhat Film Company in Pune. There, he met Dev Anand, and soon after, made his directorial debut with 'Baazi' (1951). The personnel behind the professional
While filming 'Baazi', Dutt met singer Geeta Roy, whom he married in 1953. Their union, however, was marred by rumours of his affair with actress Waheeda Rehman, creating tension at home. His increasing emotional instability and the commercial failure of 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' led him to alcoholism and despair.
Despite directing only eight films, Guru Dutt's technical brilliance redefined Indian cinema. He introduced the 'Guru Dutt Shot', a stylised close-up that captured unspoken pain. His portrayal of women—from Gulabo in Pyaasa to Chhoti Bahu in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam—broke stereotypes and brought nuance to female characters.
His collaboration with talents like Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker, and cinematographer V.K. Murthy resulted in a legacy that transcended time. A star that burned too bright, too fast
On 10 October 1964, at just 39, Guru Dutt was found dead under circumstances still debated, accidental or suicide. Either way, it was the final act of a life lived in artistic turmoil.
Yet, like the shadows he so masterfully lit on screen, Dutt never really disappeared. His films were rediscovered across 13 countries in the 1970s and '80s. In 2004, the Indian government honoured him with a commemorative stamp.

‘Humara aashirwad hai': Indian family's sweet encounter with biker couple in Switzerland melts millions of hearts

A biker embarking on an extraordinary journey from Delhi to London with his wife shared a heartwarming moment from Switzerland that struck a chord with Indians worldwide. Auto enthusiast and travel content creator Prateek Chaturvedi, who is riding across 24 countries with his wife Shikha, posted a video on Instagram showing them taking a short break at a picturesque Swiss location. As he stood by his heavily modified bike, carefully designed to store everything needed for their long road trip, an Indian family happened to pass by. The interaction turned touching when the man noticed the tricolour on the biker's jacket. (Instagram/mysticriderprateek) Intrigued, the man from the family struck up a conversation, visibly amazed by the customisations on Chaturvedi's motorcycle. When the biker revealed that they were travelling through 24 countries, the man's curiosity grew. His family gathered closer, listening intently as the biker explained that he and his wife, both IT professionals, had taken five months off work to fulfil their dream road trip. The interaction turned especially touching when the man noticed the tricolour on Chaturvedi's jacket. Placing his hand on it, he smiled and said, 'Yeh dekh kar bahot anand hua. Humara aashirwaad hai (Seeing this filled us with joy. Our blessings are with you.' He also posed for a photograph with the couple, offering his heartfelt wishes for the journey ahead. 'Bacche log bahot accha kaam krrhe hain. Very nice. Har ek hindustani ka blessing hoga aapke saath (You kids are doing a great job. The blessings of every Indian are with you),' he added before bidding them farewell. 'His reaction on seeing the Indian National Flag was priceless & his love & support made our day,' the biker wrote. The video has since gone viral, racking up more than two million likes on Instagram and prompting an outpouring of emotion. 'Humara ashirvad hai – ghar se door ghar mil jaata hai (You found home away from home),' wrote one user. Another commented, 'This is the appreciation and support required from elders, instead of just for celebration and growing wealth.' A third noted, 'Ye hi Indian culture aapne log dekh ke kitna khus ho gaye, especially Indian flag dekh ke hamara ashirwad hai aapke saath pure emotion. ("This is Indian culture — they became so happy seeing our people, especially after seeing the Indian flag. Our blessings are with you, pure emotion.)"

Viral Video: Lover Sneaks Into Girlfriend's House At Night, Wakes Up To A Situation He Never Imagined

The video shows the girl placing a tilak on her lover's forehead as he applies sindoor to her hair but what catches the attention of many viewers is the groom's expression Viral clips on social media often range from bizarre pranks to heated public confrontations. But one recent video has left viewers both amused and stunned; not because of a fight or a dramatic revelation, but because a late-night romantic rendezvous turned into an unexpected wedding. The incident came to light through Instagram user Ranjeet Singh (@ranjeet__singh_60), who shared footage showing a young man allegedly sneaking into his girlfriend's house under the cover of darkness. According to the video, the boy, driven by eagerness to meet her, entered the home at midnight. But his plan fell apart when her family woke up and caught him inside. By morning, the matter had escalated beyond the household. The girl's relatives called in villagers, and in a scene reminiscent of rural social arbitration, a decision was made – the couple should be married immediately. The video shows the girl placing a tilak on the young man's forehead before he applies sindoor to her hair parting. What catches the attention of many viewers, however, is the groom's expression – not joy, but visible shock. Commenters have suggested he may have only intended to spend time with his girlfriend, not commit to marriage on the spot. Further intrigue came when a follow-up video emerged, showing the boy declaring he would stand by his new wife despite his family's refusal to accept the union. 'Wherever I live, I will keep her with me," he said in the clip. Reactions to this statement were sharply divided. 'The mother who gave birth is the one snatching the happiness of the son," wrote Seema Kumari, while another commenter argued, 'No one respects those who do not respect their parents." Some, like Vijay Kumar, took a more pragmatic view, saying, 'Having courage is not enough; settling down in life is a big thing." Whether viewed as a story of love defying opposition or a cautionary tale about midnight visits, the video has cemented its place as one of the latest viral sensations on Indian social media. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
