BELGRADE - Supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) threw flares and fire crackers at anti-government protesters in Novi Sad on Wednesday evening prompting police to intervene to end the standoff.
Months of protests across Serbia following death of 16 people killed when a roof on a renovated railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, have rattled President Aleksandar Vucic and his SNS party.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said one policeman was injured in Novi Sad. N1 TV footage showed flares and fire crackers being thrown at protesters from the direction of the SNS offices.
Later near the parliament building in Belgrade, the police in riot gear blocked anti-government protesters approaching the area where Vucic's supporters have been camping since March.
On his Instagram account, Vucic, a former ultranationalist who converted to the cause of European Union membership in 2008, published a video showing him sitting with supporters in front of the parliament.
"I came here to be with people," he said.
Earlier he addressed his supporters in Belgrade a few blocks away and said: "Our response (to protesters) is clear - we are not going to let you destroy Serbia."

Also in Belgrade, near SNS city headquarters, protesters clashed with police who prevented them from approaching the SNS offices.
The protesters have blamed corruption for the Novi Sad railway roof collapse and have demanded early elections that they hope would remove Vucic and his party from power after 13 years.
They have accused Vucic and his allies of ties to organised crime, violence against rivals and curbing media freedoms. Vucic has denied the accusations.
On Wednesday evening, students who are leading the protests called supporters to protest in front of SNS offices in major cities in Serbia including Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Cacak and Nis, after several protesters were injured in clashes with SNS in the town of Vrbas on Tuesday evening. Russia readying nuclear-powered cruise missile test, Ukrainian military intelligence says

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON/WASHINGTON - Russia is preparing to test its new nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered cruise missile and if successful, plans to use the results to bolster its negotiating position with the West, Ukrainian military intelligence said on Friday. Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for the service, issued the written statement to Reuters just before U.S. President Donald Trump was due to hold talks in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending Moscow's war in Ukraine. He did not give an assessment of the possible timing of the test in the statement, given in response to questions submitted by Reuters for a report published on Tuesday that Moscow was preparing to test the 9M730 Burevestnik cruise missile. He did not say how his service arrived at its assessment. It has for years received intelligence from the United States and its NATO allies, and it has its own networks inside Russia. Reuters on Tuesday reported two U.S. researchers and a Western security source as saying that Moscow was readying a test of the Burevestnik at its Pankovo test site on the Barents Sea archipelago of Novaya Zemlya. The researchers said imagery from Planet Labs, a commercial satellite firm, showed extensive activities at the site, increases in personnel and equipment and the presence of ships and aircraft associated with previous tests of the weapon dubbed the SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO. The Russian defense ministry, the Pentagon and the CIA declined to comment for that report. The White House did not comment directly on whether a test was being prepared, saying in response to a question about it that Trump wanted peace in Ukraine. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. "Russia is preparing for another round of tests of the 9M730 Burevestnik," his statement said. "The purpose of these tests is to validate scientific and technical solutions implemented by the missile." "If successful, Russia will leverage the test results to defend its interests in negotiations with the West," he continued. Putin has said the weapon is "invincible" to missile defenses, with an almost unlimited range and unpredictable flight path. But many experts say it is unclear if the missile can evade defenses, would not give Moscow capabilities it does not already have, and would spew radiation. The Burevestnik has a poor test record, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative advocacy group, with two partial successes among 13 known tests. REUTERS

UK police seize Andrew Tate's $300,000 Aston Martin deposit

LONDON - Police in Britain said on Aug 15 they had seized a £180,000 (S$310,000) deposit that misogynist influencer Andrew Tate put down on an Aston Martin supercar amid allegations of unpaid taxes and money laundering. The amount paid towards the Aston Martin Valhalla car will be added to a pot of £2.7 million already seized from Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan in December 2024. Devon and Cornwall police in south-west England in 2024 won a legal bid to seize the deposit, paid by Andrew Tate in July 2021 from a cryptocurrency account. The Tate brothers did not oppose the police's decision to pursue the funds, half of which can now be distributed to 'good causes' while the other half will be spent on public services. A London court was told the funds used to pay the deposit 'were the proceeds of tax and VAT evasion and money laundering', according to a statement by the police. Passing judgement in the civil fraud case in 2024, Judge Paul Goldspring, who also presided over the latest order, said the influencer brothers, who have millions of followers on social media, had 'engaged in long-standing conduct to evade their tax'. Andrew Tate often boasts online about his multi-million-dollar supercar collection, which forms a key part of his persona promoting toxic masculinity and hustle culture. Top stories Swipe. Select. Tate later turned to social media platforms to promote his divisive views, including misogynistic and sometimes violent maxims. The Tate brothers face allegations of trafficking minors, sexual intercourse with a minor and money laundering in Romania. They also face rape and assault allegations in separate cases in Britain, with a civil trial due in June 2026. The brothers, who have British-US nationality, have denied all accusations. AFP
