Chelsea star deletes references to club on Instagram after Enzo Maresca snub

Wesley Fofana has deleted all reference to Chelsea on his official Instagram account after he was overlooked by Enzo Maresca in the draw with Crystal Palace last weekend. The 24-year-old has struggled for regular playing time at Chelsea due to injuries following his move from Leicester City for an initial £70 million fee three years ago. Fofana did not play a single minute in the 2023-24 campaign due to an ACL injury, while last season he made 14 appearances in the Premier League. The French defender was named on the bench for Chelsea's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace last Sunday but he was left as an unused substitute as the Club World Cup champions were held to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are in the market for a new central defender with Levi Colwill set to miss the majority of the season with an ACL injury. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Maresca, meanwhile, has made it clear that he does not Fofana as a replacement for Colwill in the central position of his back three. 'He [Fofana] needs to be fit, first of all, and then he can do it,' Maresca said. More Trending 'He played 45 minutes in that position and it was the first half against Bournemouth away if you remember – probably one of the worst halves since we started. 'Benoit [Badiashile] playing in the middle, the Conference League final, first half, we were losing 1-0. Then we changed with Levi and we won 3-1. So it's not the same.' Fofana has now sparked speculation over his future by deleting all reference to Chelsea on his Instagram page and leaving up images of his personal life, as well as his time at Leicester City, Saint-Etienne, and with France's national side. Chelsea are next in action away to West Ham on Friday evening. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Man City finally launch Gianluigi Donnarumma transfer talks after Pep Guardiola hint

Gianluigi Donnarumma's future continues to hang in the balance with Manchester City among the clubs interested in bringing the Paris Saint-Germain star to England Manchester City have opened talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a move for Gianlugii Donnarumma. Italy goalkeeper Donnarumma is tipped to leave Paris this summer following the arrival of Lucas Chevalier, with Pep Guardiola's side among the potential buyers. ‌ City have already signed one goalkeeper this summer, with James Trafford rejoining the club after a spell at Burnley. Stefan Ortega is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium, but last season's first choice Ederson could also depart to make way for a Donnarumma swoop. ‌ Ederson was left out of City's squad for the Premier League opener at Wolves on Saturday, with Trafford starting and Ortega on the bench. Guardiola said the Brazilian missed out through illness, but reports of a Galatasaray switch are gathering pace. ‌ According to Football Italia, there is still work to be done on the Donnarumma fee. City are said to be unwilling to meet PSG's asking price of around £40m, but the prospect of getting the keeper's high wages off the bill could convince the French club to lower their demands. Similarly, City are believed to be at odds with Galatasaray when it comes to the valuation of Ederson. The Turkish side value the Brazilian at £10m or less, but the Premier League side are holding out for more despite him being in the final year of his contract. Donnarumma has been with PSG since 2021, when he joined on a free from AC Milan, and helped the Ligue 1 champions win last season's Champions League. He was left out of the recent Super Cup squad, though, with manager Luis Enrique explaining the situation. 'I can only say good things about Gigio Donnarumma', the boss told reporters. 'He's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt, and he's even better as a person, but we were looking for a different profile of goalkeeper.' Guardiola declined to answer when asked on Saturday if Ederson had played his final game for the club. Instead, he attempted to focus on Trafford's performance after the 22-year-old made a long-awaited debut for the club. ‌ "I'm so happy for James. for the fact that he is an academy player and he is a City fan and made his debut in the Premier League here," Guardiola told BBC Radio 5 Live after the 4-0 win at Molineux. "He played really good and I'm really pleased. I like when the young players in the academy can play for Man City, It's really, really good." If Galatasaray do end up signing Ederson, it would see him reunited with former City winger Leroy Sane. German international Sane joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich earlier in the summer.
