Marcos secures trade deal with Trump – but tariffs only drop 1%

Despite weeks of high-stakes negotiations, the US offered only a symbolic concession in the trade deal clinched by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as he wrapped up his Washington visit on Tuesday, only agreeing to lower threatened tariffs from 20 per cent to 19 per cent.
'It was a beautiful visit, and we concluded our Trade Deal, whereby The Philippines is going OPEN MARKET with the United States, and ZERO Tariffs. The Philippines will pay a 19% Tariff', Trump said, announcing the cut on his social media account.
The deal has not yet been confirmed by Manila. Securing a favourable trade deal to shield Philippine exports from the looming economic blow was Marcos' top agenda item for the visit as he aimed to leverage the decades-old security ties to get a tariff discount.
Trump in his post emphasised that in addition to the trade deal, the two countries 'will work together militarily.'

US Treasury hits Iranian shipping network with major new sanctions

The US Treasury Department announced fresh sanctions on Wednesday on more than 115 Iran-linked individuals, entities and vessels, in a sign the Trump administration is doubling down on its 'maximum pressure' campaign after bombing Tehran's key nuclear sites in June. The sanctions broadly target the shipping interests of Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of Ali Shamkhani, who is himself an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US Treasury described the move as the most significant Iran -related sanctions action since 2018, during US President Donald Trump's first administration. According to the US Treasury, Shamkhani controls a vast network of container ships and tankers through a complex web of intermediaries that sell Iranian and Russian oil and other goods throughout the world. The Treasury accused Shamkhani of using personal connections and corruption in Tehran to generate tens of billions of dollars in profits, much of which is used to prop up the Iranian regime.

Trump says tariffs talks with China ‘moving along well'

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that talks with China on a tariff deal were 'moving along well' and that both countries would reach a 'fair' deal on trade, without offering additional details of the long-awaited agreement. Advertisement 'We're moving along with China. We're doing fine with China,' Trump told reporters at the White House. 'I think it's going to work out very well. We're right in step … I think we're going to have a very fair deal with China,' he added. Trump's latest comment came a day after delegations from both countries finished a third round of high-level talks in Sweden, ahead of an August 12 expiration of a pause on additional tariffs that the world's two largest economies slapped on each others' goods. Beijing and Washington had been expected to extend their tariff truce another three months, sources on both sides told the South China Morning Post before discussions began on Monday. The Chinese embassy in Washington has not responded to a request for comment. This month it noted that China's exports to the US declined by 24 per cent year on year in the second quarter of 2025, with the situation 'equivalent to the first quarter of 2020 when the economy activity was stagnant' during the pandemic. 02:07 China, US finish Stockholm trade talks with divergence on timing of tariff pause extension China, US finish Stockholm trade talks with divergence on timing of tariff pause extension At separate press briefings on Tuesday in Stockholm, US and Chinese negotiators, while calling their discussions 'constructive', diverged on the timing of the fresh tariff pause.

Trump's trade war latest challenge for 97-year-old Asian market in Seattle

Uwajimaya, the Seattle-based Asian grocer, has navigated hardship before. Not long after the family business opened its doors in 1928, it temporarily closed when founders Fujimatsu and Sadako Moriguchi and several of their children were incarcerated at a Japanese detention camp during World War II. More recently, the Covid-19 pandemic strained the grocery industry's supply chain, forcing Uwajimaya, among others, to raise prices. Now, President Donald Trump's rapidly shifting approach to tariffs and trade deals is causing a wave of economic uncertainty for the store chain that is likely to leave its customers feeling the pinch. The levies are just one more factor affecting grocery prices. With distributor and grocery margins where they are, it cannot all be absorbed by the distributors and the retailers,' said Uwajimaya's president and CEO Denise Moriguchi. 'For sure, it will be felt by everyone.' Last month, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics tracked an uptick in inflation in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area of Washington state, with regional costs jumping 2.7 per cent year over year. The upswing was partially attributed to tariffs. However, news of potential price increases at Uwajimaya isn't scaring off some of its loyal customers. Seattle resident Sara Louie, 29, said prices were skyrocketing across industries. 'Everything is expensive anyways,' Louie said.
