Australian Families Paying Up to $1.3 Million More to Live in Popular School Zones: Report

Some Australian families are paying up to $1.3 million (US$860,000) in premiums for houses in top public school catchments, zones where enrolment is determined by residential address, in Melbourne and Sydney. While these properties typically offer lower long-term capital growth compared to standard houses, they may offer a cost-effective alternative to paying private school fees.

Afterpay Day 2025 is back — here are 50+ expert-picked early deals I personally approve

Afterpay Day 2025 has officially begun! This major Australian sales event unites a wide array of top brands and retailers, providing significant discounts across different product categories. Much like the sale that took place in March, this Afterpay Day event is officially taking place over four deal-filled days, starting early on Thursday, August 14 and ending at the stroke of midnight on Sunday, August 17. Afterpay Day offers significant discounts on a huge range of tech, beauty, fashion, homewares, fitness, gaming, home entertainment and appliances. After covering these events back-to-back in the past two years, I'm on deck for this Afterpay Day sale, and aiming to bring you the best live deals as soon as we find them. Do make sure you check back throughout the entire sale, as we will be constantly updating this page. Happy shopping! Hi! I'm Lucy, a staff writer here at Tom's Guide AU. I've been deal hunting for over a year now in hopes of finding you the best bargain buys during peak sales. Whether you're shopping for the latest tech, home appliances or a new pair of sneakers, I'll be on deck to help you score the best Afterpay Day deals on offer. If you're constantly on the go, be it commuting or travelling, there's no better accessory to have than a portable power bank for your devices. Our colleagues over at TechRadar give this INIU top marks in their best power banks guide, as it can fast charge your phone or your laptop with ease, and still have extra juice left over. Just make sure to apply the 15% coupon before checkout! Want a Samsung S-series device without the high cost? Samsung's Galaxy S24 FE (Fan Edition) provides just that, boasting Galaxy AI features like its premium siblings. This model comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Discount applies to the Mint, Blue and Graphite colour options. Not the biggest discount ever, but when you consider that Samsung's excellent A-series handsets are already pretty cheap to begin with, this is a great deal. The Galaxy A55 offers a stylish design and nice build quality for the price, and even provides some AI features, including the popular Circle to Search function. Looking for an entry-level handset that punches above its weight? Motorola's Edge 50 Fusion offers just that, boasting a 6.7-inch display, IP68 resistance to water and dust, 256GB storage capacity and a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 CPU. A great-looking smartphone that delivers style on a budget. If you haven't upgraded in some time and are looking for the cheapest possible iPhone, grabbing the iPhone 13 at this price might be the move. It should continue to receive software support until around 2028 based on the support of previous devices and, while the iPhone 14 is newer, it only offers an improved main camera and safety features like Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection. However, for just AU$200 more, you could opt for the iPhone 16e or discounted iPhone 15. Cutting AU$150 off the iPhone 15 makes it a very enticing option if you're looking to upgrade. We have a guide on how to choose between the iPhone 15 VS the iPhone 16e, but the iPhone 15 at this price (compared to the AU$999 16e) might make it the winner for many thanks to more colour options; a brighter screen sporting the Dynamic Island, MagSafe charging and a better, more flexible camera system. This price on the iPhone 16 makes it a great option for those looking to snag a cheap iPhone. It offers a range of colours and the speed of Apple's A18 platform, combined with an excellent dual camera array and the new Camera Control button. We have a guide on seven differences between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e, but the big difference is the base model's camera. At full price, the 16e is the easy choice, but this discount makes the base model considerably more attractive to budget buyers. This discount makes the 16 Pro Max an enticing buy for those who need a little more size and power for work or play. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is Apple's biggest and most powerful iPhone ever, with a beautiful screen, awesome camera and a power and battery life that our reviewer said made it "the big-screen smartphone of your dreams". The iPhone 16 Pro – offering the same power in a smaller frame – is also down to AU$1,529. You may have heard of HMD's Skyline smartphone — it's the handset you can repair on your own, with the ability to pop off its back so you can replace a cracked screen or other parts with ease. Now, how often the average person will need to do that kind of stuff remains to be seen, but if you're looking for a device for the long haul, the Skyline may be for you. Oh, and it's one of the only Android smartphones which supports Qi 2 wireless charging, which is neat. ↑ Back to all deals Right now, you can pick up the 128GB Wi-Fi model of the latest iPad Mini at a massive 14% discount, bringing it to its lowest price ever. Powered by the impressive A17 Pro chip, you can expect snappy performance from this tiny-but-mighty tablet, with a display measuring just 8.3 inches. Just because a laptop is a 2-in-1 doesn't mean powerhouse specs are off the table. Case in point, this HP Spectre x360, which packs a whopping 32GB of DDR5 RAM into its svelte chassis. This is a ripper of a deal for this recently launched laptop. For under AU$2,000, the Slim 7i Aura features the new Series 2 Intel Core Ultra 7 258V CPU, a 15.3-inch 2800 x 1800 touchscreen display and awesome features like Wi-Fi 7 and recognition webcam. This is the lowest price we've ever seen for the HP Victus 16, but AU$1,699 isn't too bad. For a bigger screen laptop with RTX 4070 GPU and 32GB RAM, you can conquer all quests with this HP, no matter whether you game or not. ↑ Back to all deals Need a cheap pair of buds that'll deliver some solid Spatial audio? Meet the Sony WF-C510s. These buds deliver some punchy, detailed sound, with support for 360 Reality Audio, nice ANC and impressive battery life. Samsung's third-gen Galaxy Buds may not be as powerful as its Galaxy Buds Pro 3, but they're far cheaper sand offer excellent battery life, great noise cancellation and live translation features when paired to a recent Galaxy smartphone. This portable speaker dropped to just AU$129 last Boxing Day, so this isn't the best price we've seen, but it's packed with features that drive deep, clear and immersive audio. This speaker is perfect for travelling, outdoors and parties, and it's waterproof, making it a poolside staple. Also available in Blue Dusk, Sandstone and Alpine Sage. Yes, they've been replaced by a newer model, but the Sony XM4 over-ear noise-cancelling headphones were so good upon their release, that they continue to hold their own now. Comfortable, incredibly effective noise-cancellation and Sony's stupendous sound, they're a terrific buy. These cheap buds pack a mighty punch. The EarFun Air Pro 3s deliver decent noise cancellation, premium sound quality and an impressive 45-hour battery life with the charging case. A "brilliant tracker" that earned 4.5 stars in our Fitbit Charge 6 review, if you want a small addition to your wrist that can handle all your fitness needs, it doesn't get better for AU$197. It offer a physical side button, improved heart rate monitoring over its predecessor, water resistance up to 50m and a 6-day battery life. The white model can also be had for AU$199. ↑ Back to all deals Slicing a massive 43% off RRP, this Govee backlight will change the way you watch movies, game or stream music on your smart TV. The lights can sync up to any form of entertainment using the accompanying app and dance along to your favourite tunes or enhance any film. A nice discount on this wildly popular new co-op platformer, from the makers of It Takes Two. You and your chosen partner will travel through this epic narrative as Mio and Zoe, two writers trapped in a simulation of their imaginations after an attempt to steal their ideas goes terribly wrong. For fans of Indiana Jones, Doom: The Dark Ages is currently available at a discount for PS5. Released just over a month ago on the platform, this title from developer Machine Games (known for Wolfenstein: The New Order) truly embodies the spirit of Indy. It masterfully blends stealth, combat, and puzzles within an adventure filled with spectacular set pieces and expansive open-world exploration. Better yet, it plays incredibly on PS5 Pro. We're now getting into true pro-level territory with the SteelSeries Apex Pro, which boasts magnetic Hall effect rapid-trigger switches for ultra-fast actuation and response time. Its linear OmniPoint switches also offer adjustable actuation from 0.4–3.6mm, allowing you to precisely customisable the feel and travel distance of every key. It also boasts a frame made from aircraft-grade aluminium alloy for increased durability. If you're primarily into MMO games, Corsair's Scimitar Elite might be for you. It sports 12 side buttons for quick access to all your commands, and also provides 150 hours of battery life. Offers a 2.4Hz dongle for wireless connectivity and also supports Bluetooth. ↑ Back to all deals It doesn't quite match a previous low of AU$349, but this nice discount using our exclusive code BREVFUTURE10 is still rather reasonable on the Bambino Plus. This compact machine ranks third on our best coffee machines list as a budget-friendly beginner machine. You'll need to pair it with a great coffee grinder; however, you can expect some seriously gorgeous crema and effortless microfoam. Also available at Amazon for AU$525, but no matter where you buy this machine, you'll surely be impressed. Calling all pet owners, parents, and messy eaters, this little machine is for you. Using warm water and stain formula, this carpet washer quickly removes spots and stains from carpets, furniture, rugs and more, with ease. Saving you time and money, this machine is worth every penny. Hailing from a well-known robovac brand, there's a massive 32% off RRP on the Ecovacs Deebot T30 Omni. The bot scored rather highly in TechRadar's review, nabbing an impressive 4.5 stars. The T30 Omni has excellent mapping and navigation, a nice design and is compact enough to fit under a kitchen or bathroom counter. If you're looking to save some extra pennies on a stick vac purchase, this deal is for you. Shaving a massive AU$151 off, this Shark IZ102 cordless vacuum offers powerful suction and a self-cleaning brush roll. Plus, the nozzle has LED lights that'll reveal any hidden dust and debris as you vacuum. This small blender is perfect for breakfast or smoothies on the go and packs a mighty punch. The blender is small enough to fit inside your bag, and you can whip up 15 drinks per charge. Also available in a ton of fun colours under the same listing. This LG A9 CordZero handstick stands out with its ability to both vacuum and mop. It also includes a self-emptying dustbin and LG's Kompressor technology, which compresses collected debris to allow for more capacity before emptying is required. Shark's FlexBreeze Fan can be used both corded and cordless, thanks to its detachable head and rechargeable battery. It can even be transformed from a pedestal fan to a desktop fan in seconds, making it extremely versatile. This deal comes with the misting attachment, which spritzes water to cool you down even more. Other stores:• Shark (without misting attachment): AU$199.99 We gave this Breville compact pizza oven 4 out of 5 stars in our review, but we knocked off a mark because it was too expensive. But this discount slashes a modest AU$100 off at The Good Guys. Emulating a traditional wood-fired pizza oven, it can reach up to 400C and creates a direct intense heat that ensures a perfect pie every time. Looks can be deceiving though, as this appliance will take up a microwave-sized portion of countertop space and weighs around 15kg. Score 20% off this next-level shop vac from Shark. This ultra-powerful mini vacuum can be used to clean wet or dry messes inside and outside your home, and can even suck up glass, screws, gyprock and any liquids. Cleaning the machine is easy too, as all you'll need is a cup of water to clean the dustbin using the hose. The Shark Steam and Scrub Mop offers boosted steam power, with specifically designed scrubbing pads that rotate 150 times per minute to hold and lock in dirt. With four washable mop pads included in the box, you'll always have a fresh set ready to go. Now at a new low on Amazon, this versatile kitchen appliance is within reach. The KitchenAid KM-150 Artisan Stand Mixer is more than just a whipping and mixing machine. When paired with additional attachments, you can slice veggies, grind meat or even make pasta — the options are endless. That said, this discount is pretty major, but you'll only get the standard mixer with the whisk, dough hook and flat beater attachments inside the box. Available in Almond Cream, Empire Red and Matte Black under the same listing. A welcome saving on the Dyson 360 Vis Nav robot vacuum here, that's AU$50 better than the Boxing Day sales. Thanks to an extending side brush, Dyson's robovac does a better job of getting closer to the edges of a room compared to others. Couple this with Dyson's suction power, and you have yourself a solid robot vacuum minion. ↑ Back to all deals If you're strapped for cash when it comes to owning one of the best hair dryers — aren't we all? — then the Laifen SE is one to consider. This turbocharged dryer packs an impressive 105,000RPM motor that can generate wind speeds of up to 21kmph, meaning it'll dry your hair in no time. The dryer comes with two magnetic attachments — the Smooth Nozzle for frizz-free finishes and the Diffuser Nozzle for curly and coily hair types. With four temperature settings indicated by different LED light colours, a thermo-control microprocessor that helps avoid heat damage, and cute pastel colourways like purple and white, this Laifen deal is not one to miss. Be sure to apply the 30% off coupon before adding it to your cart to score this full discount. The Dyson Airwrap is pretty well known in the hair and beauty space, as it does literally everything you'd expect from a multi-styler. It curls, it smoothes, it shapes, and it dries — all without the risk of major heat damage to your hair. And now, the Origin edition of the styler is now down to just AU$599 on Amazon. Now down to a low of AU$995, Dyson's Detect Submarine houses a powerful suction and a superb runtime of up to 60 minutes. It can handle all floor types, including wet and dry messes, and now it's discounted by 36%. We gave this impressive hair straightener a massive 4 out of 5 stars in our review, as it took less than 20 minutes to dry and style our reviewer's hair. We knocked a mark off though, as we felt this styler had an inflated price tag. However, this fine deal from Dyson direct is the icing on the Airstrait's cake, bringing it down to just AU$599 during Dyson Frenzy. It's not the cheapest price we've seen for the hair tool, but it's still a mighty good discount of AU$150. If you need a new hairdryer, but don't require all the bells and whistles of a Dyson Supersonic or Shark Speedstyle, then this Remington Aero 2000 is a great option. For under AU$20, this Remington dryer packs a 2000W motor that's ideal for fast drying and styling if you're in a hurry. It comes with two styling attachments and has 3 different heat settings, including a cool shot for setting your blowout. Now at a new low, Dyson's "most intelligent" hairdryer is designed to dry your hair faster and without the possibility of heat damage thanks to its new Scalp Protect mode. We gave it a massive 4 out of 5 stars in our review, only knocking it back due to its hefty price tag. But now, with an impressive discount on the Ceramic Patina / Topaz colourway from its maker, this hairdryer is worth snapping up. Styling your tresses doesn't have to end in knotty messes, thanks to the Shark SmoothStyle. The tool was specifically designed to straighten and smooth hair through heated comb technology, delivering healthy and voluminous end results. The styler also comes with Wet Hair mode so you can quickly style wet hair with minimal heat damage. ↑ Back to all deals While we haven't reviewed this particular walking pad in our best under desk treadmills lineup, it does meet the criteria to be included in the running. The Sperax RM-A-01 walking pad houses three modes — walking, jogging and vibration — so you can meet your fitness goals while working from home. It's light, compact and easily folded away, so you won't have to worry about the machine taking up too much floor space when not in use. Hitting your fitness goals can be tricky, and it always helps to have the right tools in your arsenal to get you there faster. The Homebuds Digital Scales provide accurate results every time, thanks to the in-built auto calibration and weight sensors. The scales come with batteries included and a bright LED screen for displaying results. A lovely discount on these platform sandals directly from the maker. If you prefer slides over clogs (honestly, same here), then these Cozzzys shouldn't be dismissed. These sandals come with a fuzzy layer, keeping you and your toes snug, no matter the activity. Do note, though, this discount is exclusive to the Hot Blush colourway. Knocking a huge 80% off, these sandals are down to a modest AU$23.99 in both the Vanilla and White colourways. If you're keen on a chunky heel hiker aesthetic, these shoes are great for outdoor activities, like picnics, nature walks and more. Get cozy and stay that way when walking in the Skechers Dynamight Cozy Time sneakers. This ultra-lightweight lace-up features an engineered mesh upper, a Skechers Memory Foam insole and a Skech-Air cushioned midsole. Step into style with the Skechers Women's Bobs B Cute Shoe, featuring a Memory Foam cushioned insole for unbeatable comfort.
