Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah United Rungus Organisation (PRBS) remains committed to strengthening the culture and heritage of the Rungus' various community development initiatives. Its President, OKK Makinsos Nawai, said the association is now actively looking for alternative funding sources instead of relying fully on government assistance. 'We have plans in place, but the association lacks sufficient funds. That is why we are working to find our own sources. 'It is not sustainable to depend solely on government aid,' he said after a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Musa Aman, Tuesday. Among PRBS' planned programmes are the establishment of a Rungus language school and cultural training centre focusing on traditional weaving and handicrafts. Makinsos said the visit was to brief Musa on the organisation's ongoing efforts to uplift the Rungus community through social, educational and cultural initiatives. PRBS currently has over 1,200 members from Kudat, Matunggong, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Paitan and Beluran. The association has also produced many professionals and intellectuals from the Rungus community, including doctors. Also present during the visit were PRBS Patron Sarapin Magana, Deputy President Rico Rayliko Ongikal, and Vice President II Onius Tamaki. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? G57 offers legal aid, demands transparency in Zara Qairina's death
Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: he Malaysian People's Power Movement (G57) has voiced deep concern over the slow progress of the investigation into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina, who is believed to have been a victim of severe bullying at a school in Papar. G57 announced it will provide additional legal assistance to Zara's family, including legal counsel to help them pursue justice. Its chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said the group could no longer remain silent as delays and a lack of updates in the case have sparked growing public unease. "We've received reports suggesting that the investigation may be intentionally delayed or 'protected' due to the alleged involvement of a VVIP's child. If true, this is a serious miscarriage of justice," he said. As part of its next steps, G57 will advise the family to consider filing a civil suit against the school or any party found to be negligent or complicit in the incident. The group will also continue to pressure the authorities for full transparency and regular updates on the case. "No one is above the law. A person's social status or background must never be used as a shield from criminal accountability," Zulkarnain emphasized. G57 also urged all Malaysians to stand in solidarity with Zara Qairina's family and collectively demand justice, transparency, and urgent reforms to make schools safer and more humane. "Justice for one child is justice for all," Zulkarnain said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 1.2 million jobs via TVET, digital econ
Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Kuala Lumpur: The government will introduce the Perkasa Madani TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Financing Scheme and the TVET Training Fund to encourage youth participation. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) with the theme 'Redesigning' at the Dewan Rakyat, said that the TVET programme would also be expanded to tahfiz students to produce Madani huffaz technocrats with added value in technical expertise. The government, he said, will also expand the TVET curriculum to include the field of ageing with special incentives for students undergoing industrial training. 'TVET programmes are gaining popularity. In 2024 alone, 212,000 new admissions into TVET programmes were recorded,' he said, adding that the Madani TVET programme will be strengthened to increase the mastery of skills that can generate higher income, including for tahfiz and huffaz students. 'At the same time, the level of TVET certification will be increased by introducing three new levels of expertise, six to eight, to be equivalent to the level of higher education qualifications under the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). This effort aims to recognise high skills in technical fields and expand career paths, in line with market needs,' said the prime minister. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said TVET graduates are also enjoying increasingly competitive incomes, most of which exceeded the minimum wage of RM1,700. 'About 95.6 per cent of TVET graduates are able to secure employment within six months of completing their training,' he said. He said the close collaboration between TVET institutions and industry would serve as a catalyst for technological transfer and skills enhancement in line with initiatives by the Ministry of Higher Education. 'The structure of TVET programme offerings will be re-strategised with a focus on high-growth, high-value (HGHV) and advanced technology-based industries. 'This is in line with labour market demands and strategic industry needs such as in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) project and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP),' he said. He said the government is targetting the creation of 700,000 new job opportunities in the manufacturing sector and another 500,000 career creations in the digital economy during the 13MP period. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
