[UPDATED] MACC: Smuggling ring moved drugs, contraband via Malacca strait
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, in confirming this today, said: "Based on our investigations, the smuggling ring was believed to be moving their product through the Strait of Malacca, mostly off the Johor coasts."
He was speaking to reporters after launching the 2025 Chief Commissioner Roundtable Conference at the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers here today.
Azam said those responsible for national security were instead allegedly facilitating smuggling activities.
"They are supposed to safeguard the country's security, protect information and share that information with enforcement agencies.
"Such leaks have allowed smuggling activities to continue rampantly, particularly in the waters from the Strait of Malacca to Johor," he said
Yesterday, the MACC dismantled a drug and contraband smuggling syndicate involving senior armed forces officers in the southern region.
The operation, codenamed Op Sohor, resulted in the arrest of five senior military officers and five civilians.
According to sources, the suspects, aged between 30 and 55 and including an Indonesian national, were arrested around the Klang Valley.
The operation was carried out by the MACC Intelligence Division with assistance from the Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad.
Sources had added that the syndicate is believed to have been capable of moving goods worth RM5 million each month.
The senior officers arrested were from the armed forces' intelligence division, including two former personnel from the same unit.
They had been tasked with monitoring and curbing smuggling activities, but are believed to have colluded with the syndicate for the past five years — allegedly amassing more than RM3 million in bribes.

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Cynthia D Baga Text Size: The offence falls under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 55E(2) of the same Act. Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old China national was fined a total of RM25,000 by the Sessions Court here for harbouring five illegal immigrants at premises under his control. Li Hao pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain, who imposed a RM5,000 fine for each illegal immigrant involved. In default of payment, Li will face six months' imprisonment per charge. Li was found to have allowed five Filipino nationals — two women and three men, aged between 18 and 48 — who lacked valid travel documents, to remain at the Liubaba Lease premises in Taman Emas, Jalan Penampang, around 9.10pm on July 10 this year. The offence falls under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 55E(2) of the same Act. The law provides for a fine between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both, for each illegal immigrant found on the premises. In mitigation, Li appealed for leniency. However, Prosecuting Officer Mohd Sharifuddin Salim urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent. In a separate case in the same court, four Filipino nationals were jailed four months each after pleading guilty to entering the State without valid travel documents. Nanette Sapnay Pili, Cherry Mae Sampung Bernardino, Junaida Omar, and Kc Marwuez Sanchez were arrested during an Immigration enforcement operation at an entertainment outlet in Tanjung Aru at 1.20am on Aug 3. The four failed to produce valid identification documents during the operation. The court ordered their sentences to run from the date of their arrest. They will be referred to the Immigration Department upon completion of their prison term. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old contractor was fined RM3,000 by the Sessions Court here for failing to appear as a witness at the Immigration Department office in Kudat. Liew Ket Vui pleaded guilty before Judge Hurman Hussain to the charge of failing to comply with a summons without reasonable excuse. The court ordered that he serve six months' jail in default of payment. Liew paid the fine. According to the facts of the case, Liew failed to present himself at the Kudat Immigration office at 9am on June 3 this year, as required in a summons issued to him in connection with an investigation. Labourer fined for possessing another person's MyKad
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Jo Ann Mool Text Size: The charge falls under Regulation 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, on conviction. Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old labourer was fined RM3,000 or seven months' jail by the Magistrate's Court here for being in possession of someone else's identity card. Morsidi Selsido pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to having a MyKad bearing the serial number 920314-12-5415 under the name of Izwan Zulkornai without reasonable cause. The offence took place at 12.20pm on Aug 9, at Arrival Hall 3, Domestic Terminal, Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). The charge falls under Regulation 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, on conviction. According to the facts of the case, an immigration officer stationed at KKIA's Arrival Hall 3 had inspected Morsidi, who showed a digital E-Boarding Pass image with two flight routes: Tawau–Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan–Kota Kinabalu. However, further checks revealed that the boarding pass was not registered in the system and was suspected to be fake. A subsequent inspection uncovered a MyKad under the name of Izwan Zulkornai in Morsidi's possession. Suspecting an attempt to deceive authorities using a fake boarding pass and someone else's identity card, the officer lodged a report. Fingerprint verification with the National Registration Department (NRD) later confirmed that Morsidi's identity did not match the MyKad's registered data. Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, representing Morsidi, requested a non-custodial sentence, stating that his client is a married father of two, works as a labourer, and this was his first offence. He told the court that Morsidi had been cheated by an agent and had paid RM3,000 for the document. The court ordered Morsidi to be referred to the Immigration Department after paying the fine or completing his sentence. In a separate case, a 38-year-old woman was fined RM1,300 or one month's jail for having a mobile phone installed with an online gambling application. Hamsia Haruna pleaded guilty to possessing a phone with the 'Mega88' app, used for online gambling activities, at 2.10pm on March 7 at a grocery shop in Taman Jumbo Commercial Centre, Putatan. She was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both, on conviction. According to the prosecution, police conducted 'Op Dadu,' an online gambling top-up operation, at the premises and found Hamsia involved in the activity using her mobile phone. Inspector Yusdi Basri prosecuted both cases. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
