Harry Potter star Warwick Davis is 'out of touch' with J. K. Rowling controversy: 'I don't tend to read the news'

Yahoo22-05-2025

Warwick Davis is excited for the upcoming Harry Potter series, but he's keeping out of the surrounding controversy with franchise creator J.K. Rowling.
"I don't tend to read the news. It's kind of one of those things I just don't do," Davis, who played Professor Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter films, told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday at the opening of Universal Epic Universe in Orlando. "So, I'm kind of out of touch with what's going on. It's not really something I'm particularly interested in — producing entertainment is what I do."
Rowling, a self-described TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist), has repeatedly received criticism over the years for voicing anti-trans rhetoric, with original Harry Potter film stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint even speaking out against her views.
Most recently, the author publicly celebrated an April 16 U.K. Supreme Court ruling that excludes transgender women from the legal definition of a woman under Britain's Equality Act.
The move drew vocal criticism from various fronts, including Fantastic Four and Last of Us actor Pedro Pascal, who slammed Rowling in the comments section of a recent Instagram video from activist Tariq Ra'ouf, calling her a "heinous loser."
Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan also publicly rebuked the U.K. Supreme Court ruling and Rowling. Coughlan shared a link to an article on The Cut on an Instagram Story, which she titled "This Is a New Low for J.K. Rowling," and wrote on the post: "Keep your new Harry Potter, lads. Wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole."
In the wake of the backlash, HBO's Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of content at HBO and Max, addressed concerns that the new series would reflect Rowling's anti-trans sentiment.
"Harry Potter is not being secretly infused with anything," he said on The Town podcast. "And she's entitled to those views. And I think people are pretty clear that she's entitled to them."
He added, "And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter."Knowledge of controversy aside, Davis remains optimistic about the new series coming from HBO.
"I love the Harry Potter stories [and] the whole concept of what Harry Potter stands for," Davis told EW. "So to see a new retelling of that story can only be a good thing."
Mark Mylod, a key figure on HBO's Succession, will serve as an executive producer for the upcoming series and direct several episodes. The series will be overseen by showrunner, writer, and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, a veteran of programs like Killing Eve and His Dark Materials. Rowling will also step into an executive producer role.
A press release emphasized how the new series will serve as a spacious vessel for the beloved book series, claiming it will be filled with "fantastic detail" as it "[explores] every corner of the wizarding world."
The series is expected to begin filming later this year.

Watch Jennifer Lopez spin a fantastical web in teaser for 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'

Jennifer Lopez is making a bold new move in her career. The multi-hyphenate star is at the center of the teaser trailer for Kiss of the Spider Woman, a film adaptation of the 1993 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical hit from Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon. Lopez plays Ingrid Luna/the Spider Woman, a fictional silver screen diva who brings dazzling technicolor into the bleak life of prisoner Molina (Tonatiuh Elizarraraz), a window dresser convicted of public indecency. The film switches from Molina's harsh reality to a fantastical, musical utopia as he recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical to his cellmate, Valentín (Diego Luna), a political prisoner. Set to John Kander and Fred Ebb's — the legendary duo behind Chicago and Cabaret — award-winning score and a book by Tony Award winner Terrence McNally, Condon's adaptation draws inspiration from the Broadway musical and the acclaimed 1976 novel of the same name by Argentinian writer Manuel Puig. The Broadway musical won seven Tony awards, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Chita Rivera, who originated the role of the Spider Woman. Condon's adaptation isn't the only time the Spider Woman has made her way to the big screen. Héctor Babenco directed the first film adaptation of the novel, which premiered in 1985. The critically acclaimed film starred William Hurt, Raúl Juliá, and Sônia Braga. Hurt won the Best Actor award when the film premiered at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Actor. Babenco became the first Brazilian filmmaker to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Director, and the film was the first Brazilian production to receive a nod for Best Picture. It also received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. Lopez is not only the star of the film, but also serves as an executive producer alongside Luna, her ex-husband Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and 12 others. The movie debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival back in January and received a standing ovation from the audience, which reportedly left Lopez in tears. The mother of two previously opened up about taking the role during an interview with Variety's Awards Circuit podcast in November. She called it "the most challenging and rewarding role I've ever had." "It's a dark story, but also one about love and survival — about helping each other through hard times," Lopez added. "I think that's a message we really need right now." She recalled Kander being with her in the studio when she recorded her songs. "He's [98] years old and still so full of life," Lopez said. "Hearing him say, 'I've never heard this song sung better' — it was one of the best moments of my career." Kiss of the Spider Woman is set to premiere in theaters Oct. 10. Russell Simmons sues HBO for $20 million over doc alleging sexual misconduct

NEW YORK — Russell Simmons has filed a lawsuit against HBO and the makers of the 2020 documentary 'On the Record,' claiming defamation for their allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. The record executive, who's seeking $20 million in damages, is also accusing them of ignoring or suppressing evidence from witnesses who 'refuted and rebutted the accusations falsely made' against Simmons, according to lawsuit filed in New York. 'Despite voluminous support for Mr. Simmons in the form of credible information, persuasive evidence, witness statements and calls for further investigation by notable members of the media, politics and the civil rights movement, the defendants simply disregarded it, and released, and continue to re-release globally, a film that tremendously disparaged and damaged Mr. Simmons with salacious and defamatory accusations that he vehemently denies,' his attorneys, Imran Ansari and Carla DiMare, said in a written statement to Variety. In the complaint, Ansari claims the streamer ignored multiple polygraph tests that 'would have been discovered with due diligence and adherence to accepted journalistic standards.' The documentary made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2020 and detailed sexual assault and misconduct allegations against the Def Jam Records founder from multiple women. The project was originally to be produced as a part of Oprah Winfrey's deal with Apple TV, but the media mogul later withdrew from the film and it ultimately landed at HBO Max. Along with the $20 million, Simmons is requesting a court order to have the title removed from all of HBO's platforms. Simmons has faced multiple lawsuits accusing him of misconduct. More than 20 women have come forward alleging sexual assault, many of whom participated in the documentary. A spokesperson for Warner Bros., the parent of HBO, told TMZ the company 'stand[s] by the filmmakers and their process, and will vigorously defend ourselves against these unfounded allegations.'

Tom Felton Returns as Draco Malfoy in Broadway's HARRY POTTER IN THE CURSED CHILD — GeekTyrant

Here's a cool piece of news for Harry Potter fans! Tom Felton is heading back to the Wizarding World! The actor is best known for playing Draco Malfoy in all eight Harry Potter films, and will officially reprise his role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway starting November 11, 2025. He'll be part of the production for 19 weeks, through March 22, 2026. Not only is this Felton's Broadway debut, but it also marks the first time an original cast member from the films has stepped into the Cursed Child stage story. Felton shared: 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. 'It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and of course his iconic platinum blond hair – and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.' Set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , Cursed Child focuses on the next generation, specifically the children of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and yes, Draco, as they begin their own journeys at Hogwarts. Felton will now embody a version of Draco that fans never saw in the films. One that is older, more reflective, and navigating the uneasy weight of legacy. The show's producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, called the moment 'powerful on many levels.' 'As fans of the wizarding world ourselves, we feel incredibly fortunate to welcome Tom into our Cursed Child family on Broadway and to offer 'Harry Potter' fans around the globe the once-in-a-lifetime excitement of seeing him reprise this iconic role, this time on-stage in New York City. 'This moment is powerful on many levels—Tom will be making his Broadway debut and is marking a full-circle moment for not just himself, but for Draco too. He gets to inhabit Draco once more, but this time as an adult facing the relatable challenges of parenthood and the complicated meaning of legacy.' Since opening at the Lyric Theatre in 2018, the Broadway production of The Cursed Child has evolved from a two-part epic to a single, streamlined 3.5-hour experience. The show remains one of Broadway's most technically dazzling and narratively rich productions, blending old lore with new emotional stakes. For fans of the franchise, seeing Felton return to the role, especially in such a personal, time-jumping context, offers a rare kind of magic.
