Himachal CM urges Centre to explore feasibility of opening Shipki-La route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
In a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the chief minister said that Shipki-La region has served as a vital Indo-Tibetan trade route, predating modern borders. He said that it has also been a cultural corridor for Tibetan Buddhism and ancient pilgrimage paths reflecting India's enduring civilizational ties to Kailash and Mansarovar.
He said that Kinnaur region of Himachal Pradesh being semi-arid and situated in a rain shadow zone like Spiti, is less prone to monsoon disruptions, which keeps the route accessible for most of the year, adding that the path from Shipki-La via Gartok towards Darchen and Mansarovar is comparatively shorter on the Tibetan side. He said that Shipki-La also offers a more stable and unambiguous corridor, making it well suited as a long term, dependable corridor for pilgrimage and cross-border connectivity.
Sukhu said that Himachal Pradesh has already road connectivity up to Shipki-La via Rampur and Pooh and with focused development of base camps and supporting infrastructure, this route can be seamlessly integrated into the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra framework.
The CM further said that the state government would extend all logistical and administrative coordination to the Centre if the Shipki-La route is opened for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Himachal CM Sukhu inaugurates state-level Van Mahotsav
Shimla, Aug 14 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the 76th state-level Van Mahotsav at Kanlog in Shimla, and said that around 9,000 hectares of forest land this year would be planted with trees under different schemes. Sukhu added 60 per cent of these saplings would bear fruits as he also planted a deodar sapling during the event. Additionally, he launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna across all Assembly constituencies and virtually interacted with ministers and MLAs participating in the programme, and discussed forest conservation and afforestation measures in detail. Addressing a gathering on this occasion, he said that Van Mahotsav highlights the importance of forests, often called the Earth's lifeline. He said that the state government was working to protect and enrich the bio-diversity of the state. 'These efforts will contribute to achieve the target of increasing 30 per cent forest cover by 2030," he added. The chief minister said that the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana would not only promote forest development, but also enhance public participation and strengthen the rural economy. 'Under this scheme, mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self-help groups and joint forest committees would plant and look after saplings on one to five hectares of designated forest land for five years. A budget provision of Rs 100 crore has been made for this purpose," he said. He said that the state government was also focusing on financial discipline for 'vyavastha parivartan' and introducing various reforms in the working of the Forest department. 'The officers are being encouraged to dedicate more time to field work related to forest expansion and conservation rather than office routines," he said. He also gave cheques of Rs one lakh each to different mahila mandals for tree plantation under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana. Apart from this, cheques of Rs 50,000 each have also been distributed under the JICA project. Echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's oft-repeated maxim, 'This is not an era of war,' New Delhi sees the talks as a potential step toward de-escalation. India's support stems from its long-standing ties with Russia, a key supplier of oil and arms, and its desire to maintain strategic autonomy amid US pressure. Recent US tariffs—25% on Indian oil purchases from Russia, doubled after reciprocal measures have strained Indo-US relations, making a summit that could ease sanctions on Russia particularly appealing. A resolution in Ukraine might stabilise global energy markets, benefiting India's economy, which relies heavily on discounted Russian crude and easing tension with the Trump led US administration. India's stance on the Russia-Ukraine war has been nuanced, as the country balances its historical ties with Russia while navigating relationships with other major global players. New Delhi has played a quiet role in passing messages between Moscow and Kyiv, reflecting its commitment to dialogue over confrontation. Modi's recent phone call with Putin, where he was briefed on Ukraine developments, underscores India's vested interest in a positive outcome. A successful summit could reduce US sanctions pressure, allowing India to continue its energy trade with Russia without punitive costs. However, New Delhi treads carefully, aware that backing a deal involving territorial concessions could alienate Ukraine and western partners, complicating its growing ties with the US and Europe. India's endorsement, therefore, is less about endorsing territorial swaps and more about advocating for peace to serve its economic and strategic interests. In contrast to India's position, Europe's reaction to the summit is markedly less enthusiastic, colored by fears that Trump's deal-making could undermine NATO and Ukraine's sovereignty. European leaders, particularly in Poland, Germany, and the Baltic states, are alarmed by Trump's suggestion of 'swapping territories' to end the war, a proposal Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called 'unacceptable.' The EU's frustration is compounded by its own sanctions' regime, which has failed to cripple Russia's economy, partly due to countries like China and India continuing to buy Russian oil. This creates a transatlantic rift, with Europe wary of being sidelined in a US-Russia bargains that could reshape its eastern flank. The summit's Alaskan setting amplifies its geopolitical weight. For India, the Arctic is a distant but emerging interest, with investments in Russian energy projects like those in the Yamal Peninsula. A thaw in US-Russia tensions could revive deals like the Rosneft-Exxon Arctic venture, potentially opening opportunities for Indian firms. Europe, however, sees the Arctic as a strategic flashpoint, with Russia's militarisation and China's growing presence raising concerns for NATO members like Norway. A US-Russia agreement on Arctic resources could destabilise the region's delicate balance, leaving Europe to navigate a new power dynamic. For the US, a Trump-Putin summit could yield significant political and strategic benefits, primarily by bolstering Trump's image as a decisive leader capable of tackling global conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war. A successful negotiation could lead to a ceasefire, enhancing U.S. influence in European security and potentially securing concessions from Russia, such as reduced alignment with China or energy market stabilisation. However, there are also substantial risks associated with the summit which could result in a more fractured world order. For Russia, the summit offers a chance to break its diplomatic isolation and reinforce Putin's global legitimacy. Russia could push for favorable terms in Ukraine, like securing Donbas and Crimea or blocking Ukraine's NATO path, aligning with Moscow's long-term goals. Yet, Putin faces challenges such as overplaying demands, risks stalling talks, and any agreement requiring significant concessions could weaken his domestic narrative of strength. The summit's optics may benefit Russia more than the U.S. unless Trump extracts clear strategic wins, making the outcome a delicate balance of power and perception for both leaders. Given the high stakes and complex dynamics, it is prudent to adopt a wait-and-see approach until the Trump-Putin summit occurs. One can hope that both leaders navigate their strategic interests and domestic pressures to make the summit successful, potentially advancing peace in Ukraine and mutual benefits, though the outcome remains uncertain and fraught with risks for both the US and Russia. CM inaugurates first-ever 'zero waste tribal festival' in Keylong
1 2 Shimla: Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday virtually inaugurated the first-ever 'Zero Waste Tribal Festival' in Keylong of Lahaul and Spiti district from Shimla. He also laid the foundation stone of five bridges worth Rs 36.4 crore in Udaipur sub-division. The tribal festival, which would conclude on Aug 16, is being organised for the first time in the state on the theme of 'Zero Waste'. The event aims to promote environmental conservation and showcase the unique art and culture of the district. The CM stated that the event would provide tourists with an opportunity to know the region better. Climate change has posed serious challenges to the country and the state, and Lahaul-Spiti is no exception, with unusually heavy rainfall in the district being a major cause of concern, said Sukhu. He added that the state govt is taking all possible measures to provide relief during disasters and is working with the central govt to ensure environmental protection. A team of scientists, with the Centre's support, is conducting a detailed study on incidents of cloudbursts, said the chief minister. Sukhu also mentioned that Lahaul-Spiti has emerged as a model district in women empowerment , and the traditional products of the area would be promoted under the 'Him-Ira' brand. Sukhu also laid the foundation stone for five bridges in Udaipur sub-division under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Phase-3, to be built at a cost of Rs 36.4 crore. These include a 35-metre steel truss bridge over Chaikhang Nallah costing Rs 9.9 crore, a 49-metre double-lane steel truss bridge over the Chenab river costing Rs 9.4 crore, a 22-metre RCC T-beam bridge over Kishori Nallah costing Rs 17.6 crore, a 76-metre RCC beam bridge over Teling Nallah costing Rs 13.3 crore, and a 22-metre RCC beam bridge over Moring Nallah costing Rs 1.8 crore.
