Ranking LSU's top five super regional moments in Alex Box Stadium history
Postseason baseball at Alex Box Stadium is special. College baseball doesn't garner the same attention as college football and college basketball, but Baton Rouge is different. It has no equal.
Alex Box Stadium holds 10,326, but you would think it's a lot more if you've ever watched a super regional in Baton Rouge. The place comes alive, and it's not all that different from Tiger Stadium across the street, despite a capacity that's just 10% of what the football stands hold.
LSU has hosted 12 Super Regionals at The Box. The Tigers are 9-3 in those series and 19-9 in super regional games at home.
Now, it's West Virginia's turn to witness the power of the postseason at The Box. The Mountaineers roll in for the Baton Rouge Regional set to begin on Saturday.
LSU didn't make a super regional in 2024 after falling in the Chapel Hill Regional. The last time LSU was in this spot was 2023, when the eventual national champs swept Kentucky in two games. Super regional baseball at Alex Box will be a welcome site for LSU fans.
Here are the top five super regional moments in Alex Box history.
June 6, 2003: Back-to-back homers vs. Baylor force Game 3
On the brink of elimination, LSU used back-to-back home runs to lead off the eighth inning and force a game three. Clay Harris hit the first homer against pitcher Abe Woody to right-center.
After the Bears made a change on the mound, Ivan Naccarata hit a solo blast to put the Tigers up 6-5. that score set up a rubber match. LSU took the series with a 20-run showing the next day.
June 6, 2015: Walk-off homer vs UL-Lafayette
In the latest installment of an in-state rivalry, LSU and UL-Lafayette met in Baton Rouge for a super regional match. The two sides came down to the wire in the series opener, winning 4-3 on a walk-off home run from designated hitter Chris Sciambra.
The Tigers advanced to Omaha with a win the following day. The rare matchup of in-state teams well into the postseason provided an extra sense of excitement inside Alex Box Stadium.
June 8, 2008: Ninth inning rally keeps LSU alive vs. UC Irvine
After dropping Game 1, LSU was facing elimination in Game 2 of the super regional vs. UC Irvine. LSU trailed 7-4 entering the top of the ninth. The Tigers' season was on the brink.
With the bases loaded, Jared Mitchell drew a walk to make it 7-5. Then Nicholas Pontiff drove in another run on a fielder's choice. Blake Dean singled to right field to score Mitchell, and suddenly it was tied.
Catcher Sean Ochinko kept the rally going with a single to left, driving in the go-ahead run. The next day, LSU punched its ticket to Omaha.
June 10, 2017: Big inning late leads LSU past Mississippi State
In the opening game of the super regional against Mississippi State, LSU found itself in a hole. Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Tigers scored four unanswered runs in their half of the frame to cement a 4-3 win. Greg Deichmann, Zach Watson and Michael Papierski recorded the RBIs.
LSU pitcher Alex Lange put together a standout game, finishing with 10 strikeouts through 7.2 innings. The contest was one for the ages in eyes of then-LSU head coach Paul Mainieri.
"Well, that's a game that we'll never forget in these parts," Mainieri said. "I'll be talking about this game 10 years from now."
June 7, 2013: Aaron Nola dominates
In what would be a two-game series win against Oklahoma, starting pitcher Aaron Nola hurled a gem. The right-handed pitcher threw a complete game shutout at home in game one, his fifth of the season.
Nola allowed just two hits and didn't surrender a walk while adding six strikeouts. LSU needed the effort in its quest for a College World Series berth as it won 2-0 over the Sooners.

Rookie Troy Melton allows 1 hit as Tigers beat White Sox to win series
CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Troy Melton allowed one hit in five innings and three Detroit Tigers relievers maintained a shutout of the Chicago White Sox in a 1-0 win on Wednesday. It was a series-clinching win for the Tigers, who advanced to 70-52 and extended a narrow lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. The Tigers are just 11-14 since the All-Star Break, while the division-rival Guardians are 16-7 in that stretch. Melton (3-1, 2.82 ERA) threw 56 pitches over five innings. The 24-year-old struck out six batters. Luis Robert Jr. hit a leadoff double in the fifth inning, but Melton responded with three consecutive swinging strikeouts to end his day. Since giving up six earned runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates in his July 23 debut, Melton has been responsible for just one run in four appearances. Tigers relievers Sawyer Gipson-Long, Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest combined to allow one hit over the final four innings. Vest picked up his 18th save of the season. (AP) — Daylen Lile's two-out, ninth-inning single boosted Washington over Kansas City. After the Royals tied the game in the eighth, Luis García Jr. doubled, then scored on Lile's single to right for the lead. Jose A. Ferrer (4-3) recorded four outs for the win. Carlos Estévez (4-5) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits and a walk in the ninth. The Nationals took a five-run lead in the first, highlighted by Nathaniel Lowe's grand slam. Royals starter Seth Lugo surrendered seven runs on six hits over four innings. The five runs in the first was his most since an eight-run fourth inning against the Dodgers on Aug. 7, 2023. Nationals starter Jake Irvin allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks in four innings. Edwards led off the game with a home run and Agustín Ramírez capped the scoring with a two-run single in the seventh. Edwards extended his hitting streak to eight games and is batting .447 in that span. CUBS 4, BLUE JAYS 1 TORONTO (AP) — Rookie right-hander Cade Horton struck out a career-high eight in 5 2/3 sharp innings to win his fourth straight start, Michael Busch and Matt Shaw homered and Chicago beat Toronto. Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya was carted off the field after injuring his left ankle landing on first base in the eighth inning. Horton (7-3) didn't allow a hit until Andrés Giménez lined a single to center with one out in the sixth. Nathan Lukes followed with a popup and Bo Bichette chased Horton with a 10-pitch walk. Andrew Kittredge came on to face Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who hit an RBI double. Addison Barger flied out to the warning track to end the inning. Guerrero's hit snapped the 23-year-old Horton's scoreless streak at 28 1/3 innings. Horton hadn't allowed a run since July 9 at Minnesota. Daniel Palencia pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances. Peña started a two-run first with his his fifth leadoff homer of the season on Walker Buehler's fifth pitch. Diaz added a two-out RBI single and, with the Astros up 2-1 with two out in the sixth, he sent an 0-1 sweeper from Buehler (7-7) 415 to left-center for his 17th homer. Boston had the tying run at third base with two outs in the sixth. With Romy Gonzalez at the plate, Red Sox manager Alex Cora stood outside the dugout demanding Brown be called for a balk. A meeting between the four umpires ensued, but no balk was called. Cora was ejected for the fifth time in 2025 during a pitching change an inning later.

DJ Pickett may not be the only LSU football freshman making an impact on defense
LSU football cornerback DJ Pickett will make an immediate impact in 2025. The five-star freshman was one of LSU's most talented defenders the moment he arrived on campus. But he's not the only freshman with a chance to see the field. LSU safety CJ Jimcoily could eventually earn a spot in the rotation, too. Jimcoily was a three-star in the finals Rivals Industry Rankings of 2025 -- not the exact profile of a guy who plays right away in the SEC. But Jimcoily's strong early impression, along with LSU's depth concerns at safety, could work in Jimcoily's favor. Jimcoily is playing the STAR position in Blake Baker's defense. Harold Perkins has a strong grip on the starting spot, but down the depth chart, it's wide open. While the Industry Rankings had Jimcoily as a three-star, Rivals was high on Jimcoliy, ranking the Nashville product as a four-star and No. 13 at his position. At 6-foot-3, Jimcoily has the size you want in a safety/linebacker hybrid. It's exactly what Baker is looking for at the STAR spot. I wouldn't expect Jimcoily to play a lot, or even at all, early. But as LSU enters the stretch and depth is tested, LSU might need the freshman. LSU wasn't afraid to rely on true freshman defenders in 2024. If a guy is ready, Brian Kelly and Baker will put them on the field. Jimcoily could be playing a role when games matter in November.

LSU football coordinator says veteran wide receiver can take LSU's offense to next level
LSU football needs to up its explosive play rate in 2025. LSU ranked No. 25 nationally with 431.5 yards, but not much of that yardage came from the big play. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was effective in the quick game and intermediate areas, but LSU lacked the personnel to push the ball down the field. LSU's lack of a run game played a part but LSU didn't have the speed on the outside to run by defensive backs. Chris Hilton does, though. Hilton finally got back to full health in LSU's final two games of 2024 and it added another element to LSU's offense. Hilton combined for 218 yards and three touchdowns vs. Oklahoma and Baylor and LSU's passing game looked like a complete product. Hilton is gearing up for year five at LSU. And with an offseason of good health, a true breakout year could be in store. Hilton i entering year five at LSU. After a healthy offseason, Hilton is staring at a career year. LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan is ready to see Hilton's full impact. "I think you can look at the last couple games last year, our ability to attack vertically really changes when he's out there," Sloan said. Hilton averages 21.2 yards per catch in his career at LSU. Even when the consistency hasn't been there, the big play potential has. "Being able to push the ball down the field is a huge thing. Chris has been consistent. I think he has a great attitude, great body language and is attacking every day," Sloan said. Hilton signed with LSU in 2021 -- the same class as Nussmeier. Ed Orgeron was still head coach when Hilton signed his letter of intent. Hilton was a four-star recruit and No. 79-ranked player in the class. He's talented, but injuries have prevented Hilton from being a top contributor on a weekly basis. "He's going to play really good football. I've been excited for him. I know he's been through a lot," Sloan said. LSU's offense needs to take another step if it hopes to reach the College Football Playoff. The Tigers can't do that without an explosive passing game. "When safeties come down, we need to be able to push the ball down the field. And Chris absolutely helps us. Because ultimately it's about scoring points. It's not just about yards, right? Yards is one thing. But we've got to score points. And that comes from, you know, explosive – a lot of times it comes from explosive play touchdowns. And he definitely gives us the opportunity to do that," Sloan said.
