AFL Mid West round 11 wrap: Cripps and the Blues go down to the Giants
Round 11 was one of mixed fortunes for the AFL's Mid West talent, as the Cripps-led Blues continued their up-and-down form.
On Saturday, the Blues drew first blood in the 15th minute mark of the first quarter through Charlie Curnow from outside 50, sparking Carlton into action as Cripps then went on to take a mark over the top of Giants' Toby Bedford which led to a well-executed goal.
GWS bounced back through Toby Greene, the first of what would be a big day for Greene as the Giants got their contest under way.
A high-scoring first term set the tone for the rest of the game.
It was a goal-for-goal second term. GWS edged in front with goals through Callum Brown and Jake Riccardi pushing the Giants ahead going into the half-time break.
The Giants pulled away in the third term and followed through to the final quarter as the Blues failed to convert in front of goal.
A brief fightback from the Blues saw some momentum swing their way but it was short-lived as the Giants kicked ahead through Jesse Hogan.
The Giants ran over the top of the Blues in the fourth quarter, with the final score GWS 17.8 (110) to Carlton 12.10 (82). Cripps was still one of the Blues' best with 25 disposals, one goal, seven tackles and eight clearances.
Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) suffered a big loss when they came up against Kuwarna (Adelaide) at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Tyler Brockman had a decent day out with 16 disposals and one goal while Liam Ryan struggled in front of goal with four behinds and collected 11 disposals.
The Eagles held their own with the Crows going goal for goal in the first quarter, before Brockman kicked one from outside 50 in the second term to keep the Eagles in touch.
The Crows kicked truly in front of goal in the second term applying constant pressure on the Eagles backs.
It was a tale of two halves for the Eagles as the third quarter saw the Crows pull away. The Crows smashed the Eagles with relentless inside 50s.
The onslaught continued in the final term as the home side ran away with it comfortably. In the end, the final score was Kuwarna 19.14 (128) to Waalitj Marawar 8.14 (62).
Judd McVee and the Demons had an important win against the Swans at the MCG on Sunday.
McVee shone bright with a solid performance amassing 21 disposals, 14 kicks and eight marks in what was a big win for Narrm at home.
The Dees were ahead for the entire game as the Swans failed to make their way back into the game after the first term.
It was all but over in the third as Narrm ran away with it, before piling on the goals in the final term, winning by 53 points 19.17 (131) to 12.6 (78).

West Coast Eagles have collected their fifth straight WAFL wooden spoon in heartbreaking circumstances after they were cruelly denied victory by a late Swan Districts major at Mineral Resources Park. Ayden Cartwright's last-gasp goal in the final minute saw the Swans cling on for a five-point win, condemning the Eagles to yet another last-placed finish with an 11.12 (78) to 11.7 (73). Amid some promising showings from several AFL-listed players, West Coast did well to lead by five at the break and despite relinquishing the lead to trail by seven at the last change, heroically hit the front late thanks to Barnett's huge final term Two Jacks — Williams and Petruccelle — were among the Eagles' best, with the former kicking three and snaffling 12 marks, while the youthful triumvarte off half-back of Harvey Johnston, Tyrell Dewar and Lucca Grego all had at least 20 disposals. AFL players kicked the first three goals of the game as Petruccelle, Williams and Coen Livingstone helped their side to a 13-point lead at quarter-time, with the visitors held goalless in the first quarter. West Coast doubled their amount of goals between half-time and the final change – the only issue was the Black Ducks tripled their own tally, booting six in the third quarter to lead by seven heading into the last term. With the Eagles trailing in the final term, a pair of goals to Barnett narrowed the margin to five points as the hosts sensed a boilover. Barnett's third looked to have snatched victory, but a late Swans raid came up trumps as Cartwright side-stepped a tackle and snapped truly.

Lift-off for new-look Bombers in win over Giants
Essendon's new AFLW era has started, with a quartet of debutants firing the Bombers to a 56-point win over GWS. Unveiling five new faces at Manuka Oval on Saturday, the Bombers slammed through seven straight goals to set up a 13.7 (85) to 3.11 (29) victory - their highest ever score in the AFLW. A two-goal haul by Bombers co-captain Bonnie Toogood was matched by draftee Holly Ridewood and ex-Port forward Maggie MacLachlan. Last year's No.9 pick Grace Belloni and former GWS player Courtney Murphy kicked a goal apiece, while fellow draftee Taya Chambers made her debut in defence. Maddy Prespakis (one goal, 26 disposals, seven clearances) was also busy for Essendon in the engine room, taking advantage of GWS stalwart Alyce Parker's absence. Parker was leading the Giants with 15 disposals and five clearances before an ankle injury forced her out at halftime. Carlton's seven-goal hero Harry McKay praises ‘freak' teammate Sam Walsh after big win over Port Adelaide
Carlton spearhead Harry McKay has praised returning star Sam Walsh after the pair starred in the Blues' huge win over Port Adelaide on Saturday. The Blues exploded with the first six goals of the game and were never really troubled on their way to the 18.10 (118) to 9.10 (64) result. McKay, who took time away from football earlier this year to deal with mental health problems, was the highlight of the lacklustre game with his bag of seven goals. The Coleman medallist was playing with a smile on his face as helped himself to seven straight, as well as racking up a career-high 21 disposals, 15 score involvements and six marks. The seven-goal haul matches his previous best against Fremantle in 2021, the same season he won the Coleman Medal. Walsh, playing his first game since Round 14, racked up 28 disposals in limited game time. The gun midfielder had been sidelined with a foot injury, but showed no signs of rust in his return. McKay labelled his teammate a 'freak' with his workrate. 'He is a freak. What a man. The energy he brings, the way he goes at the ball, his ferocity is unbelievable,' McKay said. 'So glad he is back, the fact he wants to come back and play two games just sums him up.' Walsh was delighted to be back and never really considered not returning. 'It's great to be back, for the boys to be able to play like that, I sort of have sensed it's been coming the past couple of weeks so I might have timed my run well coming back into the team. You just can't beat being out here,' he told Fox Footy. 'There's no doubt it's been a bloody tough year, all you want to do is finish off the season with a bit of momentum to take that into next year. 'Feeling really good ... I had people probably telling me to not come back and just rest and get ready for pre-season, but if my body is right then I'm going to be going. There's no doubt it's been a challenging couple of years for me but I'm going to back my work in and go from there.' With Michael Voss' future as coach secure into next year, the Blues raced out of the blocks at Marvel Stadium on Saturday with their best first half of the season - 13.5 to lead by 55 points at the main break. After finishing off strongly in last week's defeat to Gold Coast with a blistering final term, the Blues again played more like the finals team of 2023 and 2024 than the strugglers of 2025. Tom De Koning, who is expected to accept a monster contract from St Kilda in the trade period, was immense back in the ruck. Carlton had been using De Koning up forward and as a second ruck option for large parts of this season, but he has shown the last two weeks he is best suited to the middle. Preliminary finalists last year, Port have been crawling to the end of the home-and-away season in Ken Hinkley's last season in charge. It was hard to find any winners for them against the Blues, but rookie forward Jack Whitlock showed promise with the first three goals of his career. Port will be desperate to put in a better showing next Friday night when they farewell Hinkley and club legend Travis Boak when they host Gold Coast at Adelaide Oval.
