Chargers vs. Lions: First-half takeaways from Hall of Fame Game

Chargers vs. Lions: First-half takeaways from Hall of Fame Game

USA Today6 days ago
The Chargers took a 21-7 lead into halftime of the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday against the Lions, led by backup quarterback Trey Lance.
Here's what to take away from the first half of 2025 Chargers action in a game setting.
Running back hierarchy
It certainly seems like the Chargers are confident in first-round pick Omarion Hampton, who only took 2 carries for 9 yards on Thursday evening. Hampton did have a chance to gain a few more yards, but tried to bounce outside of Lions corner Rock Ya-Sin on a carry to the left side and was cut down.
Behind Hampton, Kimani Vidal and Jaret Patterson worked with the Chargers' offense as the next two backs off the bench. Vidal scored a short rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Nyheim Miller-Hines and Hassan Haskins were the next running backs to take snaps, with Miller-Hines leading the squad with 16 rushing yards at the half. That would seem to suggest Vidal has a safer path to the 53-man roster, with Miller-Hines and Haskins battling for the RB4 and ancillary returner role.
Zion Johnson settles in
After two bad snaps on the first drive of the game, Johnson managed to keep things clean for the rest of the first half as Lance led the offense up and down the field. Thursday was the former first-round pick's first game action at the pivot spot, and it showed early, as Johnson launched a high snap that required Lance to leap up to corral it early in the first quarter. On the next play, Johnson rolled the snap back to Lance, who had to fall on the ball for a loss to keep possession. But after those mishaps, Johnson's snaps were clean for the rest of the half as Los Angeles continues to evaluate his viability at center.
Trey Lance, QB2?
Lance, the former No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL draft, looked better than he's maybe ever looked in a pro setting on Thursday. The former 49er and Cowboy went 9-of-12 for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns - one to Will Dissly on a fourth-down bootleg and one on a slant to KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the second quarter. Lance did hold the ball for a bit too long on a couple of plays, but was otherwise sharp and looks like he could be pushing Taylor Heinicke for the backup job behind Justin Herbert. Heinicke has had an up-and-down training camp and is suited only for an emergency situation on Thursday.
Nikko Reed makes his case
Reed has been one of the stars of training camp for the Chargers, and that momentum carried over into his first NFL action on Thursday. Early on, the UDFA from Oregon jumped a late Kyle Allen pass, returning an interception 60 yards deep into the red zone before running out of steam near the end zone. He continued to be sticky in coverage all half and made a tackle on kickoff coverage as well.
The cornerback depth chart seems rather crowded for LA, with six players presumably set to make the roster. But Benjamin St-Juste has had a rather anonymous training camp and Deane Leonard and Ja'Sir Taylor both struggled a bit in coverage during the first half, which could open a sliver of an opportunity for Reed to make the 53-man roster. At the very least, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Reed will make the Chargers' practice squad.
Otito Ogbonnia making a leap
Ogbonnia looked like the best Chargers defensive lineman that suited up on Thursday, penetrating into the backfield multiple times and limiting Lions running back Craig Reynolds. During the first series without Ogbonnia on the field, the Chargers yielded a 15-play touchdown drive to Detroit. Most of the attention has turned to LA's acquisitions on the defensive line - free agents Da'Shawn Hand and Naquan Jones and draft pick Jamaree Caldwell - but Ogbonnia looks to be the one setting the pace early on.

Running back James Cook's contract standoff with Bills reaches 3rd practice

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills and James Cook are in agreement on at least one aspect of the running back's contract standoff, which had the starter skipping his third consecutive training camp practice on Wednesday. Neither side will hazard guessing on how much longer Cook will continue declining to practice in the fourth-year player's escalating bid to extend the final year of his contract. What's more evident is how the team and player aren't on the same page on various aspects of negotiations based on what people on each side of discussions told The Associated Press over the past two days. The people spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the talks are private. Barring a sudden thaw in negotiations, it's unclear who is expected to take the next step to spur discussions. While the Bills have not ruled out potentially getting a deal done even if it means waiting until after the season, there's a difference over how optimistic each side is of having one in place before the season opens. The two sides also differ over whether Cook opened negotiations seeking a $15 million a year payday based on the player posting '$15 mill year' in a message he posted on social media in February. Though it's unclear how far apart they are on what's expected to be a three-year contract, Cook's current asking price ranges somewhere between $11 to $12.5 million in guaranteed money. How that fits in the Bills' long-term salary cap structure is unclear even for a player who co-led the NFL with 16 touchdowns rushing during Cook's breakout season in 2024. 'It's how do you divvy up your money? You don't want to lose a James Cook. He's a valuable piece to our team,' Bills GM Brandon Beane told The AP on July 25. 'But you also don't want to lose (left tackle) Dion Dawkins, (right tackle) Spencer Brown, the line we've put together or the money we put in the pass rush,' he added. 'Teams are forced with choices, and those choices get really hard once you've paid that quarterback.' Cook wound up being the odd-player out in Beane's offseason spree of signing four players entering their final contract seasons to extensions. Cook, meantime, believes he is deserving of a raise based on his production last year — his 16 TDs rushing tied a single-season team record — and the Bills placing an emphasis on a more balanced attack since Joe Brady took over as offensive coordinator midway through the 2023 season. 'I deserve what I want, what I need, and it's going to eventually happen,' Cook said, two days into training camp. 'I mean, however it happens, it's going to get done, wherever it happens.' He referred to viewing himself as one of the NFL's top running backs and added he didn't regret posting what he did on social media. Cook was a full practice participant during Buffalo's first eight practices, before starting his 'hold-in' on Sunday, when he watched from the sideline dressed in a white track suit. On Monday, he made a brief appearance before ducking out before practice began and did not return. Cook didn't make an appearance Wednesday, but is still present at camp. Buffalo closes camp in suburban Rochester, New York, with a practice Thursday before opening its preseason schedule by hosting the New York Giants on Saturday. The team will then resume practicing at its headquarters in Orchard Park. Cook fears risking injury while entering the final year of his contract. Though the Bills have backups Ray Davis and Ty Johnson in position to step in, they also face a risk should one of them get hurt. Bills players and coaches insist Cook's absence hasn't been a distraction. Brady said he's treated Cook's absence no different than how he's adapted his practice plans to take into account several players sidelined by injuries. 'You guys know how I feel about James and the love I have for him, and all that's out of my control in my hands,' Brady said. 'So I find out tomorrow, hey, Jimbo's going, I can focus on this. I find out it's two weeks, whenever that time comes, we'll adjust, we'll be ready to go.' ___ AP NFL:

ESPN, NFL fantasy football to merge: What it means for your league

ESPN announced Tuesday it had agreed to acquire numerous media assets from the NFL in a landmark agreement. Most notably, ESPN acquired NFL Network and the league's ever-popular RedZone channel, which shows every touchdown from every game, as part of the deal. The NFL will acquire a 10% equity stake in ESPN as part of the deal. ESPN has also acquired the NFL's fantasy football product, making NFL Fantasy a part of ESPN Fantasy Football. What will that mean for fantasy football managers? Here's what we know about that element of the merger as the 2025 NFL season approaches. How ESPN, NFL fantasy football merger will impact leagues ESPN announced it was planning to "merge [the NFL's fantasy product] into its existing platform" after acquiring it from the NFL. That means all NFL Fantasy leagues will eventually be a part of the ESPN Fantasy Football app, and ESPN Fantasy Football will be the official game of the NFL. A timetable for the app merger has not yet been finalized. That said, it seems unlikely to happen before the 2025 NFL season, as the agreements between ESPN and the NFL are subject to approval from both government regulators and NFL owners. Such a delay would allow those using the NFL Fantasy App to continue doing so in 2025. ESPN did not immediately respond to USA TODAY Sports' request for more details about the pending merger of the two products. It's worth noting ESPN changed the interface of its fantasy app on Monday, Aug. 4, one day before the agreement with the NFL was announced. ESPN outlined the changes made to the app for the 2025 fantasy football season, "will provide improved roster management options and a more personalized experience tailored to your teams and leagues." It's unclear whether the pending merger was part of the impetus for the changes, nor is it clear whether the upgrades will facilitate ESPN's eventual integration of the NFL Fantasy App's data into its product.
