Middle East15-04-2025

RAS GHAREB, Egypt, April 15 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli called for relying on local components in all wind energy projects across the country and reducing the import of foreign components.
Madbouli's call came while he was inspecting the 650-megawatt wind farm in the Red Sea city of Ras Ghareb on Tuesday.
The prime minister was accompanied by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and a number of the electricity ministry's officials, as well as officials of companies responsible for implementing the project.
The premier was briefed on the project's main components and the timetable for operating the wind farm.
Khaled El Degwy, Head of the Red Sea Wind Energy Company said the project is located 40 kilometers northwest of Ras Gharib, spanning an area of approximately 70 square kilometers.
He added the project is part of the Egyptian government's plan to leverage the rich wind resources in the Gulf of Suez.
The farm is constructed by a consortium of Orascom Construction PLC, ENGIE (France) and Toyota Tsusho Corporation/Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (Japan) under the 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
Once operational, the USD-780-million farm will generate clean energy for over 1 million households and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons annually, supporting Egypt's transition to renewable energy. (MENA)

El-Sisi, IFC discuss boosting investment flows, financing Egypt private sector

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) discussed on Sunday boosting investment flows into Egypt and financing the private sector at competitive rates to reduce costs. The president's remarks came during a meeting with IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop and IFC Vice President Ethiopis Tafara in the presence of Egyptian Minister of Planning Rania Al-Mashat, Presidential Spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said. During the meeting, President El-Sisi praised the IFC's cooperation with Egypt over the past years. He also highlighted Egypt's keenness to continue this cooperation, especially amid the current regional circumstances that impose significant challenges on development programmes, El-Shennawy added. Moreover, El-Sisi noted that Egypt is adopting structural and economic policies and reforms that support financial and economic stability. "Egypt targets increasing the private sector's role in economic activity and development and is working to enhance private sector confidence in the economy through various tax and customs incentives," the president stressed. President El-Sisi highlighted the government's initiatives to increase exports, develop productive and service activities, and expand public-private partnership (PPP) projects, the spokesperson noted. According to El-Shennawy, the IFC managing director also affirmed the corporation's commitment to fruitful cooperation with Egypt. He praised the economic reform steps taken by Egypt to enhance investor confidence and the investment climate. Furthermore, Diop affirmed the continuation of joint programmes between the two sides to strengthen cooperation and support the Egyptian economy's competitiveness. The IFC, established in 1956, is the private-sector arm of the World Bank Group. It is tasked with advancing economic development by investing in projects, providing asset management services, and encouraging investments in less developed countries. In 2024, the IFC announced a $150 million commitment to four investment and advisory projects in Egypt, including an advisory programme with Egypt's Universal Healthcare Insurance Authority (UHIA), a local currency swap agreement with Banque Misr, and a $100 million investment in Banque du Caire. The commitment also included an equity investment of up to $30 million and a $20 million co-investment envelope into SPE PEF III, a private equity fund managed by SPE Capital, to support mid-cap companies in Egypt, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. The IFC is also working with the Egyptian government to provide advisory services on introducing public-private partnerships at 11 airports to improve infrastructure, connectivity, and passenger services in the country's airport sector. Egyptian, German FMs hold political consultations on bilateral ties, regional developments

CAIRO, June 13 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held political consultations Friday with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations and exchanging views on key regional and international developments. Abdelatty emphasized the depth and strength of Egyptian-German relations, as reflected in Thursday's phone call between President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tamim Khallaf said in a statement following the meeting. He stressed the importance of upgrading all aspects of bilateral relations, particularly in the economic, trade, and investment spheres, highlighting the promising opportunities offered by Egypt's recent economic reforms. Abdelatty noted that over 1,600 German companies are operating in Egypt and expressed Cairo's desire to attract more German investments across various sectors. The minister also underscored Egypt's interest in expanding cooperation in energy, particularly renewable energy, and welcomed continued German participation in infrastructure development projects. He highlighted the significance of collaboration in vocational training and labor mobility, presenting it as a mutually beneficial opportunity for both countries. He further voiced Egypt's aspiration to enhance trilateral cooperation with Germany in Africa, especially through the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding (CCCPA). The spokesman added that the consultations also addressed several pressing regional and international issues. At the forefront was the escalation in the Middle East following Israel's military strikes against Iran. Abdelatty described the strikes as a dangerous escalation, warning of their grave implications for regional and global peace and security. He reiterated Egypt's conviction that military solutions will not resolve the region's crises. The two sides also reviewed efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the delivery of humanitarian, medical, and shelter aid to the Palestinian population. Abdelatty stressed the need for Israel to comply with international law and humanitarian law, and called for collective action within the European Union to stop the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, including efforts to expand international recognition of the State of Palestine. In addition, the ministers exchanged views on developments in Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea region. Abdelatty outlined Egypt's core principles in dealing with these crises, which include support for national institutions, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a commitment to political and diplomatic solutions.
