Midnight Mania! UFC 315 ‘Embedded' Leaks JDM's Game Plan?
Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Let's start the night off by taking look back over the three biggest stories of Monday, May 5, 2025.
Benoit Saint Denis turned down short-notice Mateusz Gamrot match up: I get that Saint Denis really needs a bounce back win, but damn if this isn't a much better match up than the one we're getting ...
Belal Muhammad rejects Ian Garry's back up role: Ian Garry still doesn't have a Top 10 win and probably shouldn't be as high up in the immediate title talks as he wants to be. Shavkat, Brady, and even Buckley have better arguments at the moment.
BJJ star Gabi Pessanha upset after massive win streak: This headline served as a reminder to me that I know very little about who the best gi grapplers in the world are right now.
Insomnia
Based on my experience with whiteboards and MMA gyms, this is more of a warm up sequence or training routine than true 'fight plan.' While it doesn't take a genius to know that Jack Della Maddalena is going to try to win the jab battle, use uppercuts against a wrestler, and work his way off the cage, it's still not cool that the UFC publicly broadcasted it. I'm sure the JDM coaching staff would've preferred it kept quiet!

More than one fan speculated that this is some sort of Trojan Horse/trap scenario, which would be quite an exemplary bit of 4D chess.
Well, it feels like UFC 315 is guaranteed to produce at least one finish ...

I failed to finish this clip, and it's only 13 seconds long. Safe to see, I won't be tuning into future Raul Rosas Jr. podcasts ...
After taking a break from fighting to reignite his competitive spark, Brad Riddell eyes a summer return. How about Bobby Green?
Azamat Bekoev scored a major KO over the weekend and is on his way to being a popular X follow to boot!

'Hulkamania will live forever': UFC fighters react to Hulk Hogan's death
WWE icon Hulk Hogan has died at the age of 71. The news was first reported by TMZ on Thursday, July 24. WWE confirmed the news. "WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away," the company said in a statement. "One of pop culture's most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans." The Clearwater Police Department in Florida said in a statement it responded to a medical call at a residence on Clearwater Beach at 9:51 a.m. for a reported cardiac arrest. Fire and police personnel responded to the scene and he was treated at the scene before he was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The death of Hogan, whose legal name is Terry Bollea, comes days after rumors circulated on social media about his health. Hogan's close friend Jimmy Hart said on July 22 he was "doing phenomenal." Hogan recently walked out to the UFC octagon with former interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington prior to his December fight with Joaquin Buckley in Florida. Bryce Mitchell: Ilia Topuria 'not unbeatable,' Makhachev and Tsarukyan will pose problems
ABU DHABI – Bryce Mitchell is adamant that UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria is not unstoppable. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) submitted Mitchell in their featherweight bout at UFC 282, but Mitchell (17-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) was able to take him down once and control him for a short while on the ground. Mitchell later revealed he entered the fight sick and wasn't able to perform to the best of his ability. Topuria has continued to dominate after scoring three straight knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and, most recently, Charles Oliveira to claim the vacant 155-pound belt at UFC 317. Mitchell sees the likes of Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan giving Topuria issues on the ground. "If Islam gets on top of him, he's in trouble," Mitchell told MMA Junkie and other reporters during Wednesday's media day. "He (Topuria) hits harder and better, and is just more precise at punching than Makhachev. That's why he's got so many knockouts. You tell Arman I was as sick as a dog in that fight, and if it was a proper fight – I should have let the fans know I probably shouldn't have took the fight. Anyways, I won't fight sick again. "That's the one fight that bothers me to this day. I can't believe I let my pride get the best of me, and I took that fight. But yeah, if Arman gets him down, he'll do great. What's great about Ilia is his shot selection, and he doesn't waste his energy. He's very, very good at conserving his energy, but he is not unbeatable, bro. I blacked his eye on a night when I didn't have no power in my arms. If I had gone in there healthy, he'd have two black eyes." Mitchell won't get the opportunity to rematch Topuria anytime soon, as now two weight classes separate them. "Thug Nasty" will return to bantamweight for the first time in 10 years when he meets Said Nurmagomedov (18-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 9 featured prelim (ABC, ESPN, ESPN+) at Etihad Arena.

Paulo Costa confident he has way to beat 'anxious' Khamzat Chimaev: 'This is pretty easy'
Paulo Costa won't let go of his beef with Khamzat Chimaev. Costa (15-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) is irate at Chimaev for allegedly sending his girlfriend "nasty" DMs, and is dead set on fighting him after their UFC 294 booking fell through. The former title challenger returned to the win column with a unanimous decision win over Roman Kopylov this past Saturday at UFC 318. Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) challenges middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis Aug. 16 in the UFC 319 headliner from Chicago. Win or lose, Costa wants a piece of Chimaev, and is confident he has the blueprint to take out the undefeated phenom. "This is pretty easy, and I'm going to break down this, OK?," Costa told Submission Radio. "I can see this very clear in my mind right now, how it's going to happen. He'll be very stressful, anxious, and anger against me. Once the fight start, he will come, faint some punches, and then he going to shoot on my legs. So, I'm going to spend some time defending his takedown, he's going to try to push, push, push, and I think after one minute, maybe one and a half, he will be exhausted. "His arms and shoulders will be heavy. Heavy like a heavyweight. Then he will realize he don't put my back on the mat, and he will be heavy and slow Maybe I'm not going to finish him in the very first round. I'm going to let him gas out everything that he had until he be like a dead man walking in the second round. Then I'm going to hit his belly as much as I can with front kicks, with body shots until I see he wants to give up. When I see that, I'm going to start to hit his face and make him uglier than he is." Leading up to his fight with Kopylov, Costa couldn't contain his emotions when asked about Chimaev during his media obligations. He sent a stern message to "Borz." "I'm coming for you, you know that," Costa concluded. "I will not lie to anyone. I don't need that. You know who I am, and I know who the f*ck c*nt you are. I'm coming for you."
