Punjab wants to end drug trafficking by May 31, DGP tells officers to lead from front
Chandigarh, Ending drugs trafficking by May 31: that's the ambitious target Punjab Police has set for itself with the force's chief directing all senior officers to firm up plans to cut narcotic supply lines effectively.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav took the carrot and stick approach to ensure the deadline is met. He announced that Senior Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police would be rewarded for their "good work" and held accountable if their performance was not up to the mark.
Addressing reporters here, Yadav said Punjab will be made a drug-free state in the sense that the availability of narcotics on the streets is fully culled.
The DGP emphasised the decision was a well-considered one and arrived at after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reviewed the ongoing anti-drug drive "Yudh Nashyan Virudh".
"We have asked all field police officers the SSPs and CPs to lead this campaign from the front so that Punjab can be made drugs-free in the true sense of the term," Yadav said.
SSPs and CPs have been directed to plan and execute whatever measures that feel are necessary and fix for themselves a target date to eliminate the menace, but it should not go beyond May 31, the police chief elucidated.
He stressed that the objective is to cut all supply lines before May 31, by which their areas should be completely free of drugs. After the deadline ends, a rigorous field assessment would be carried out to know the actual situation on the ground, Yadav said.
"Officers who perform well will be rewarded, and those with unsatisfactory results or found making will be held accountable," the police chief added while asserting that the force looks to achieve the goal in an absolutely professional manner.
"Our focus is not on a figure-based target but to completely severe the supply chains and make drugs unobtainable in Punjab," he said.
Laying out a broad strategy to fight the menace, Yadav explained that police would "call forward and backward linkages through information and interrogation" to unmask those involved in drug trafficking and eventually arrest them. "Its twin purpose is to target street-level peddlers and the big fish in one go."
"Our second mechanism is to break the financial backbone of drug smuggling... hawala networks should be dismantled. We have arrested 31 hawala operators and seized ₹8 crore of hawala money," the DGP added.

Madras High Court advices Chennai Commissioner of Police not to send investigating officers on bandobust duty
The Madras High Court, on Monday (June 9, 2025) advised Greater Chennai City Commissioner of Police (CoP) A. Arun to ensure officers investigating criminal cases do not get diverted for any other work such as providing bandobust (security) for public events/VIPs so that the investigating officers (IOs) could devote their time and conclude the investigations as early as possible. Justice P. Velmurugan said, he would summon Director General of Police/Head of Police Force Shankar Jiwal too in an appropriate case and give a similar advice so that it could be followed by police officers across Tamil Nadu. The judge said, it was high time the judiciary and the police department worked in tandem to reduce the pendency of criminal cases. The judge also told State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohamed Jinnah there were discrepancies between the data maintained by the police department and the judiciary with respect to disposal of criminal cases. He said, most of the times, the police close criminal cases by terming them as 'mistake of fact' but that does not get reflected in the judicial records. He added in some cases, the police complete investigation and file final reports but that information does not find place in judicial records because the courts do not take those reports on file. Mr. Arun told the court the discrepancies could be sorted out if the Principal District Judges and Superintendents of Police conduct monthly meetings to crosscheck the data. Concurring with him, Justice Velmurugan said, such practice of conducting monthly meetings do not appear to be followed in many districts. After asking Mr. Arun to set things right at his end in coordination with the trial courts, the judge told the Commissioner that any non-cooperation on the part of the judicial officers could be brought to his notice so that he could issue appropriate directions. 'The poor and illiterate people do not know the legal procedures beyond the process of lodging police complaints. Therefore, it is essential that the criminal justice system works for their benefit and it does not take years together even for a simple criminal case to reach its logical conclusion. Let us do something to make sure that justice is delivered at the earliest,' the judge told the CoP. He asked the officer to submit fresh data by July 8 regarding the pending criminal cases within Chennai city limits along with statistics related to those under investigation, the cases in which final reports had been filed, the cases that were pending trial and so on. The direction was issued after the Commissioner was summoned to the court in connection with non registration of a SC/ST case. Mr. Jinnah told the court that though the writ petitioner V. Vanamalai had produced a copy of a communication sent by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes calling for an action taken report from the CoP on the petitioner's complaint, the Commissionerate had not received any such communication. Though the NCSC had claimed to have sent it by e-mail, no such e-mail had been received, he said. After hearing the SPP, the judge asked him to make the submissions by way of a counter affidavit by June 23 so that appropriate orders could be passed on the writ petition.

SC grants interim protection from arrest to MP journalists alleging police assault
New Delhi, Jun 9 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday granted interim protection from arrest to two Madhya Pradesh-based journalists who alleged custodial torture, caste-based abuse, and death threats from Bhind police officials, including Superintendent of Police Asit Yadav. The petitioners, journalists Shashikant Jatav and Amarkant Singh Chouhan, approached the apex court under Article 32 of the Constitution, claiming that they were assaulted by the state police for reporting on the alleged exploitation of the Chambal River by the sand mafia. A bench comprising justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan, while declining to entertain the writ petition, directed the journalists to move the Madhya Pradesh High Court within two weeks. 'We are not inclined to entertain this petition under Article 32,' the bench said. 'However, looking at the allegations, we permit the petitioners to move the concerned High Court within two weeks from today. Till then, the petitioners shall not be arrested.' Counsel for the journalists pleaded for protection, saying, 'We are fearing for our lives. Kindly protect us for at least two weeks.' The court granted the limited interim relief but made it clear that all further remedies must be sought before the appropriate high court. The case brings to light serious concerns regarding alleged police high-handedness and intimidation of media personnel covering illegal activities in the region. UNI SNG PRS

ASP killed, 2 other cops injured in IED blast in Chhattisgarh's Sukma
An additional superintendent was killed and two other police officers were injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Naxalites exploded in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Monday, police said. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the death of Additional Superintendent of Police (Konta Division) Akash Rao Girepunje in the blast and said Naxalites will have to face its consequences. State's Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, who also holds the home portfolio, said Girepunje, a 2013-batch state police service officer, was martyred in the blast. Naxalites should shun violence, join the mainstream and contribute to the development of the society, he said. The incident took place near Dondra village on Konta-Errabor road when the ASP and other personnel were out on foot patrolling after receiving inputs that an earth-mover machine was torched by Naxalites in the area, an official said. When police personnel reached the spot, an IED exploded, causing injuries to ASP Girepunje, Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP- Konta area) Bhanupratap Chandrakar and Station House Officer of Konta police station Inspector Sonal Gwala, he said. All the injured personnel were shiftd to Konta Hospital for initial treatment, he said. "Girepunje had sustained serious injuries after coming under direct impact of the blast. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment," the official said. The 42-year-old ASP, who hailed from Raipur district, was recruited as deputy superintendent of police in 2013. He was serving as ASP, Konta since last year. He was one of the bravest personnel of the Chhattisgarh police who served in Naxal-affected areas like Manpur-Mohla and Sukma, the official said. Two other injured officials were reported to be out of danger and were being airlifted to Raipur for further medication, he said. The mortal remains of Girepunje were being shifted to Raipur where the last rites and guard of honour will be held, he added. CM Sai in a post on X said, "Received information about the martyrdom of ASP Akash Rao Girepunje ji in the IED blast carried out by Naxalites in Konta of Sukma. This is extremely sad. I salute his martyrdom. There are reports of some other officers and jawans also being injured in this cowardly attack. Instructions have been given to ensure proper treatment of the injured." Security forces have been fighting a big battle against Naxalites in Chhattisgarh and achieving continuous success in it, he said. "Frustrated by this, Naxalites have carried out such cowardly acts and they will have to face its consequences. The day is not far when their existence will end in Chhattisgarh," he added. "Girepunje ji was martyred in the blast in Konta area of Sukma. He was a brave officer and was a gallantry awardee," Deputy CM Sharma told PTI Videos in Nagpur. If a situation for talks (between Naxalites and the government) is created somehow, it ends with such incidents (referring to the blast), he said. The government has clarified that it does not want to fire a single bullet, but they (Naxalites) should join the mainstream, take benefits of the rehabilitation scheme and contribute to the development of the society and the nation, Sharma said. "The Chhattisgarh government, police, all citizens and the police family stand firmly with the family of martyr Girepunje in this hour of grief. His sacrifice will further strengthen our commitment to completely destroy a cruel and conspiratorial organisation like the outlawed CPI (Maoist)," a police statement said.
