Abbey Wood Co-op permanently closes after fire earlier this year

Yahooa day ago
A Co-op store in Abbey Wood will remain permanently closed following a fire earlier this year – a move that the company knows 'won't be welcomed by everyone'.
The supermarket on McLeod Road was damaged in a blaze in February and has stayed shut since the incident.
Co-op said the closure followed a review of its store locations and that the decision had been taken after careful consideration.
The company confirmed staff had been informed and said its focus was on supporting them.
It thanked residents for their support over the years and acknowledged that the closure would not be welcomed by everyone.
The retailer said it remains committed to serving communities in south London, with other branches nearby including Plumstead Common Road in Greenwich, Wrotham Road in Welling, and Nuxley Road in Upper Belvedere.
Co-op operates around 2,400 stores across the UK.
A spokesperson for Co-op, said: 'We carry-out reviews of our existing store locations, and sometimes, only after very careful consideration, we take the difficult decision to close a store.
'Our store in Abbey Wood on McLeod Road will remain closed following a fire earlier this year, and our priority is to fully support colleagues, who have been informed.
'We understand, this won't be welcomed by everyone, and we would like to thank the community for its support of this store.'

Inside the new Bradford takeaway serving sushi, ramen, poke bowls, and bubble tea

A NEW takeaway is blending the flavours of Japan and China in Bradford. Serving anything from marbled beef don to seared caramel salmon, YakiYaki Boom! can be found on Cleckheaton Road. It is run by Zore Tong and Hannah Zhang, the former owners of Moon Tea Chinese Cafe in Greengates. Their latest venture is inspired by a trip back home to China. While it might look like an ordinary building outside, the takeaway hopes to create an authentic feel with its Japanese-inspired elements like lantern backdrops. Food from YakiYaki Boom! on Cleckheaton Road (Image: Newsquest) The menu features freshly made sushi, including creative seared rolls, ramen bowls, poke bowls, signature bubble teas, and yogurt fruit bowls. While they are no longer involved in its operation, Zore said: "Moon Tea played a big role in our journey in Bradford. 'About a year ago, we decided to pass it on to new owners as we were planning to move away. Since then, it has been run entirely by a different team." Inside YakiYaki Boom! on Cleckheaton Road (Image: Newsquest) 'After deciding to stay in Bradford, we took everything we learned from running Moon Tea and used it to create YakiYaki Boom! - a completely new concept, menu, and brand identity.' Zore added: 'The inspiration came during a trip back to China, where I visited a popular sushi chain unlike anything I'd seen before. Their sushi wasn't strictly traditional - it combined Japanese techniques with creative elements, most of the rolls were cooked, beautifully presented, and tailored to local tastes. Sushi from YakiYaki Boom! on Cleckheaton Road (Image: Newsquest) 'I realised that this style resonated with me, especially because many Chinese customers prefer cooked flavours over raw. I took that idea and developed it further for YakiYaki Boom!, blending the best of Japanese methods with modern Asian fusion twists. 'We've built everything ourselves - from the recipes to the branding, and even down to the custom-designed packaging, menus, and interior decoration. Every detail is part of a complete brand we created from scratch.' Ramen from YakiYaki Boom! (Image: Newsquest) All of the packaging, menus and other visuals inside the takeaway are custom-made. 'You won't find the same anywhere else,' said Zore. 'We have a wide selection of milk teas, fruity green teas, and yogurt-style refreshers, all made with premium ingredients. Customers can choose from toppings like chewy tapioca pearls, popping fruit balls, and flavoured jellies. Zore and Hannah, owners of YakiYaki Boom!, pictured (Image: Newsquest) 'I hope people will love the combination of quality, creativity, and consistency. YakiYaki Boom! is not just a food outlet, it's a complete brand experience, from the way the food tastes to how it's presented, to the feeling you get when you walk in. 'It's about creating moments people remember. We want every detail to reflect our passion for quality and creativity.'

Work on Roberts Park footbridge set to begin next week after delay

WORK on the footbridge which connects Saltaire to Roberts Park is taking place from next Monday. Essential maintenance work was moved to August 18 due to 'unforeseen circumstances'. The aim is to make sure work is completed ahead of the new school term. Many Titus Salt School students use the bridge. A diversion, which will be signposted, can be found via the next available bridge which is about half a mile upstream. Footbridge at Roberts Park (Image: Newsquest) The Council said problems have arisen that mean the bridge would be closed for a lot longer than initially scheduled. Officers from Bradford Council were working with the specialist contractors to try to find a solution and keep the closure to a minimum, the Council said. A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: 'Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the work to this bridge will now not be able to go ahead as originally scheduled. 'After discussions between the specialist contractors and officers a solution has been found to keep the bridge closure to a minimum by starting work on Monday, August 18. 'We are aware that the organisers of Saltaire Farmers Market have moved their monthly market to Sunday, August 31, to accommodate the original schedule, and we'd like to apologise to them for any inconvenience that this change in schedule may cause. 'Our contractors are confident that they will have completed the work in time for Sunday, August 31.'

Haidilao to give out $800,000 dining vouchers as Clarke Quay outlet closes Aug 2025

For many Singaporeans, their first taste of Haidilao's legendary tomato broth, hand-pulled la mian, and warm service might have been at Haidilao's outlet. Come 31 Aug, this chapter will close for good. Haidilao's Clarke Quay outlet — the chain's very first store in Singapore and its first venture outside mainland China — will shutter its doors after 13 years, as its lease comes to an end. When it first opened in 2012, the riverside location quickly became a go-to for late-night suppers, birthday celebrations, and even a sobering post-club hotpot. It was here that many diners first experienced free manicures while waiting for a table, snacks on the house, and staff who remembered their favourite dipping sauce mix. Today, Haidilao has grown to more than 15 outlets across Singapore and expanded to countries like the U.S., Canada, and Australia. But Clarke Quay will always be the '一店', or 'original store' that started it all. To mark the occasion, Haidilao and CQ @ Clarke Quay will be giving away more than S$800,000 worth of dining vouchers to eligible members. Each member will receive an e-voucher worth S$20, redeemable at any Haidilao outlet in Singapore with no minimum spend. From Aug 18 to 29, diners visiting the Clarke Quay branch during selected hours will also stand a chance to win vouchers for Haidilao's sister brands, Hi Hot Pot and Hi Noodle, through a lucky draw. While the Clarke Quay unit is set to welcome a new concept after its closure, hotpot lovers can still get their fix at other branches, with the nearest ones located at Plaza Singapura, Bugis+, and Marina Square. As bittersweet as it is, you still have 2 weeks to savour those nostalgic moments at Clarke Quay. And while this marks the end of an era for Haidilao's first Singapore outlet, for anyone who's ever huddled around its steaming pots with loved ones, the memories (and spice) is sure to linger on. 10 places to feast at Clarke Quay Central before your next big night out The post Haidilao to give out $800,000 dining vouchers as Clarke Quay outlet closes Aug 2025 appeared first on
