Abbey Wood Co-op permanently closes after fire earlier this year

A Co-op store in Abbey Wood will remain permanently closed following a fire earlier this year – a move that the company knows 'won't be welcomed by everyone'. The supermarket on McLeod Road was damaged in a blaze in February and has stayed shut since the incident. Co-op said the closure followed a review of its store locations and that the decision had been taken after careful consideration. The company confirmed staff had been informed and said its focus was on supporting them. It thanked residents for their support over the years and acknowledged that the closure would not be welcomed by everyone. The retailer said it remains committed to serving communities in south London, with other branches nearby including Plumstead Common Road in Greenwich, Wrotham Road in Welling, and Nuxley Road in Upper Belvedere. Co-op operates around 2,400 stores across the UK. A spokesperson for Co-op, said: 'We carry-out reviews of our existing store locations, and sometimes, only after very careful consideration, we take the difficult decision to close a store. 'Our store in Abbey Wood on McLeod Road will remain closed following a fire earlier this year, and our priority is to fully support colleagues, who have been informed. 'We understand, this won't be welcomed by everyone, and we would like to thank the community for its support of this store.'

Pensioner, 87, was robbed and murdered outside London Co-op store after going to buy box of cornflakes and shepherd's pie, court told

An 87-year-old man was attacked in the street and left for dead for the sake of a box of cornflakes and a shepherd's pie, a court has heard. John Mackey had visited a north London Co-op store where he bought food and a newspaper before visiting a kebab shop last Tuesday. He was allegedly followed in the street and set upon when he reached Goodchild Road in Manor House. Emergency services were alerted after he was found unconscious and bleeding from his head at around 5.53pm. Mr Mackey was taken to hospital where he regained consciousness but died two days later. Peter Augustine, 58, of Hornsey, has been charged with the 87-year-old's murder and robbery and appeared in court today. Prosecutor Ben Holt said: 'A member of the public saw Mr Mackey lying on the pavement and heard a male shouting 'give me the bag' and a man standing over Mr Mackey.' Other eyewitnesses allegedly saw a male being punched, kicked and stamped on, the Old Bailey was told. The attacker allegedly made off with the victim's black duffel bag containing his cornflakes, shepherd's pie and newspaper. A post-mortem examination gave the provisional cause of death as bleeding on the brain and fractured ribs, Mr Holt told the court. Judge Richard Marks KC set a two-week trial from November 3, with a plea hearing on July 29.
