Catching a flight soon? Maybe ensure to cool down a bit before approaching the security check as a viral post on Reddit has just revealed how sweat stains trigger the TSA body scanner.
In a recent Reddit
post
, user u/ominous_pan shared that they couldn't figure out why they set off the millimetre wave scanner at a TSA checkpoint- the machine that creates 3D images of travellers' bodies using radio waves. They added that they had empty pockets and no piercings.
"I flew for the first time in 15 years this week and both airports flagged my crotch at the arms up scanner," the user wrote.
Why did this happen?

Well, people in the comments suggested that a potential reason for the incident could be having sweat stains on their clothing.
Many added that the same had happened with them.
People pointed out that moistness, wetness, sweat or compression shorts, pads, diapers and liner can get a person flagged.
Can sweat really trigger
TSA body scanners
?
According to Shawna Malvini Redden, an organisational researcher and author of the book "101 Pat-Downs: An Undercover Look at
Airport Security
and the TSA", sweat can cause a false alarm at airport security.
"The machine will send up an alarm if there's anything out of the ordinary," she told USA TODAY.

"Conceivably, the machines could bounce off the sweat and cause a false alarm."

The machines at the airport security make use of millimetre wave advanced imaging technology, which scans the bodies of the passengers with non-ionising radiation. The waves reflect off the body to detect weapons hidden underneath the body but also catch water or sweat, as per ProPublica. Thicker or layered clothing can also set off the alarm in this case.
'Added moisture from a person's body can alter the density of clothing, so it is possible perspiration may cause our advanced imaging technology machines to alarm," confirmed a TSA spokesperson in a statement.

Tailors, weavers, clerks are under construction workers' welfare board, says CAG

Bengaluru: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Wednesday pulled up Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board for irregular and unauthorised expenditure of Rs 259 crore during the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020. In a report tabled in the legislature, CAG said the board had initially proposed a preventive health training and check-up programme for five lakh registered construction workers across the state. Its first proposal in July 2020, estimated at Rs 10 crore, was rejected by the finance department, which sought more clarity. A second proposal in Dec 2020 was also blocked after the finance department demanded justification for awarding the project to three agencies directly, without following the tender process, and for seeking 4(g) exemption under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act. He also sought administrative approval to implement the scheme on a pilot basis in Dharwad circle for Rs 9 crore. Soon after, the board decided to split the same work into 30 individual projects, thereby avoiding the need for cabinet approval, and proceeded to call for quotations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? The CAG noted, "Thus, the award of contracts from Sept 2021 to May 2022 in contravention to the act/rules resulted in irregular expenditure of Rs 258.8 crore." Responding to the audit, the govt said in Aug 2024 that the work was entrusted directly since a 4(a) exemption was accorded and that there was no contravention of rules. However, CAG rejected this defence, stating the reply was "unacceptable" as it was meant to address the Covid-19 emergency and criticised the labour department for approving work by splitting them into 30 sub-works of Rs 10 crore each despite finance department objections and without cabinet approval. The report also flagged irregularities in the registration of members. Of the board's 42.5 lakh registered workers, CAG found a significant number were not actually construction workers. A random survey of 399 applicants who registered through the Seva Sindhu portal revealed beneficiaries included tailors, clerks, weavers, and others from unrelated professions. The audit recommended that the board devise a mechanism to identify and weed out ineligible beneficiaries. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Government proposes exempting life & health insurance for individuals from GST

Representative image NEW DELHI: The Centre has proposed exempting life and health insurance policies for individuals from the ambit of GST, the head of a panel of ministers set up by the GST council said on Wednesday, a move that is expected to provide relief to large sections of consumers. Bihar deputy chief minister and convenor of the panel of ministers on health and insurance Samrat Choudhary said the Centre's proposal is clear that individual insurance policies should be exempt from GST. "This has been discussed and the GoM report will be presented to the council," Choudhary was quoted as saying. He also said all members have given their approval for lowering rates and some states have given their own views. He said a final call issue would be taken by the GST council when it meets. Telangana deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, a member of the GoM , said it was made clear that the benefit of GST should go to policyholders and not companies and a mechanism needs to be worked on to ensure this. He also pointed to the fact nearly Rs 9,700 crore annual revenue loss is estimated due to the GST exemption to individual insurance policies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The 13-member panel on health and insurance was set up in Sept to draw up a roadmap on the issue and it is expected to submit its report by October. The panel includes ministers from UP, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. "The proposed reduction of GST on health and life insurance from 18% to nil (exempt) shows how GST has evolved from just a way to collect revenue to a tool for advancing national goals. It can help promote financial inclusion, strengthen healthcare, and support key initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and universal coverage," said Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner, EY India. "This change could be very important for both customers and the insurance industry. For individuals, especially senior citizens and low-income families, it could make insurance more affordable."

Ludhiana DC gives away certificates to undertrial juveniles for computer course.

Ludhiana: Deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain on Wednesday presented certificates to 35 undertrial juveniles, who have successfully completed a six-month basic computer course at the local observation home. As per an official statement from the district administration, this training programme, organised by the Philanthropy Club in collaboration with the district administration, equips juveniles with essential digital skills, fostering their rehabilitation and preparing them for a brighter future. During his visit, Jain also inspected a health camp where critical screenings, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, complete blood count, random blood sugar, and Tuberculosis, were conducted. Responding to requests from the juveniles during an interactive session, the DC also ordered the appointment of dedicated art and music teachers at the observation home to nurture creativity, boost confidence, and provide constructive outlets for self-expression. "The computer course, along with art and music classes, is a pivotal step toward rehabilitation," stated Jain. He added that these initiatives go beyond skill development—they empowered juveniles to move past their mistakes, engage in meaningful activities, and discover a renewed sense of purpose. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night?
