Gov't Continues Support For Street Vendors, Hawkers Through Empower PPK Programme
Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, said the ministry trained 618 vendors and small traders under the Empower PPK programme last year.
As of June this year, KUSKOP, in collaboration with its agencies and strategic partners, has rolled out the programme in Sabah and Putrajaya, benefiting 210 vendors and small traders.
'The allocated budget for the Empower PPK programme for 2024 and 2025 is RM60,000.
'While the allocation is modest, we have formed numerous collaborations with agencies like TEKUN Nasional, Bank Rakyat, SME Corp, and the National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN),' he said during the question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Ramanan said this in reply to a question from Datuk Muslimin Yahaya (PN-Sungai Besar) about the ongoing status of the programme and the funds distributed to participants.
He highlighted INSKEN's partnership, which has helped vendors and small traders boost their capacity and digitalise their businesses through initiatives like the Product Development Coaching Programme (PDC) and Money Management Mentoring Programme (MAC).
"This year, 288 participants have benefited, with an allocation of RM565,996. Overall, INSKEN's mentoring programme has supported 1,256 entrepreneurs with a total allocation of RM4.089 million," he said.
In addition, Bank Rakyat has provided financing to 827 vendors and small traders, amounting to RM5.6 million as of July this year, while TEKUN Nasional has allocated RM3.506 million for the Online Financing Scheme, benefitting 390 small and informal traders.

The company faced a loss of RM36 million in 2019 but returned to profitability with RM149,000 in 2020. Profits grew to RM29.5 million in 2021, followed by RM29.4 million in 2022 and RM25.2 million in 2023. SADA recorded RM41.5 million in profit for 2024 and projects an RM80 million profit for the current year. Executive authority over clean water supply resides with the federal government through the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). This is stipulated under Section 3 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006. 'SPAN issues licenses and controls all business plan operators,' Muhammad Sanusi elaborated. Nurul Allyssa, 25, who graduated with a Certificate in Computer Graphic Design, said the encouragement given by her family and teachers strengthened her resolve to keep studying to secure a better future for herself and her family. 'I did not expect to receive this award. Even though I was often unwell and missed almost a month of lessons, thanks to the teachers' support and guidance, I managed to catch up and complete all the assignments given,' Allyssa told reporters after the convocation ceremony. Allyssa, who is the sixth of seven siblings, said she planned to start her own business one day. 'I am grateful for institutes like IKB that help students from B40 families to pursue studies with various assistance, including free meals and monthly allowances,' she added. Meanwhile, another student, Nur Athirah Nadhilah Abdul Rahman, 21, a Diploma in Fashion Design Technology graduate, was announced as the recipient of the Excellent Skills Award. She received the award accompanied by her mother and her father, who has been suffering from a stroke for the past 10 years. 'My parents are my source of strength to study and achieve today's success. We rely solely on my father's pension under the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) Invalidity Scheme, which is less than RM1,000 a month, with some help from my sister. Water Tariff Hike In Kedah Not Burdending To Consumers
ALOR SETAR, Aug 20 (Bernama) — Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the increase in water tariff that took effect from August 1 will not burden the people in the state. According to him, the increase in tariff rate to 81 sen (0 cubic metre to 20 cubic metres) for domestic use is much lower compared to other states. The increase in tariff rate, he said, is an important step to ensure the ability of Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA) to pay the state government's water debt. "This tariff increase is not just happening in Kedah... all 10 water supply operators requested it and all were granted," he said during the oral question session at the Kedah State Legislative Assembly sitting here today. He said this in response to a supplementary question by Bau Wong a/l Bau Ek (PH-Sidam) who wanted to know the need for the water tariff in Kedah to be increased while SADA was recording a profit. Muhammad Sanusi, who is also the chairman of SADA, said the company needed to record a profit to enable it to pay off debts related to water supply. According to him, based on SADA's records, the company recorded a profit after tax of between RM31,000 to RM23.1 million between 2010 and 2018 before recording a loss of RM36 million in 2019.
