Assam gears up to host nat'l games after two decades
1 2 Guwahati: Assam is progressing with plans to organise the National Games in 2027, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday while inaugurating two key sports academies in North Guwahati. The state last hosted the National Games in 2007. Sarma stated that all matches of the upcoming National Games will be hosted here in Guwahati. "We have already started initial preparation for organising national games. But the games will be held after the election (assembly polls to be held in 2026)," he told the media. Although the state assembly polls are likely early next year, Sarma confirmed that the games are unlikely to take place in 2026. "We are going ahead targeting 2027. All the games will be held here. We have been informed that the finals will also be held here only. Definitely, the sports lovers are enthusiastically waiting for the national games," he added. M eanwhile, Sarma inaugurated the permanent site of the Assam Cricket Association's Cricket Academy and the Guwahati Town Club's Football Academy at Fulung in North Guwahati on Saturday. According to a govt. release, the Assam Cricket Association's Cricket Academy campus is equipped with 10 practice wickets, a cricket ground with five centre wickets, one of the largest indoor cricket halls in the country with 10 wickets, residential facilities for players, and provisions for technical directors, coaches, and other staff. The Guwahati Town Club's Football Academy features two football grounds, a 60-bed hostel, and a football pavilion, with future plans to arrange indoor games. "Both academies have provisions to impart training under the guidance of coaches of international standards," the release added. Sarma said that through these two academies, major sporting infrastructure for both football and cricket has been created to support and encourage budding sportspersons. He stated, "With systematic training, guidance from national and international standard coaches, and regular monitoring, positive outcomes could be expected, thereby fulfilling the purpose of establishing the academies." Preparations are also underway to build sports infrastructure in Chandrapur to support Assam's aim of hosting the National Games, officials said. Additionally, an Olympic-standard swimming pool is being constructed next to the badminton stadium in Amingaon in North Guwahati, while around 100 stadiums are currently under construction across the state. The Chief Minister emphasised that proper utilisation of existing sports facilities could enable Assam to produce quality sportspersons and enhance its achievements in sports. However, he expressed concern that, relative to the scale of infrastructure developed, the emergence of good players has been limited. Thus, the Chief Minister emphasised that the central focus must remain on the development of athletes. Over the past five years, Assam has witnessed notable successes through Hima, Lovlina, and Nayanmoni. Yet, Sarma stated that the state has the capacity to attain a higher level of accomplishment. Matthew Tkachuk injury update: Panthers star unlikely to sit out full season despite surgery option and Olympic concerns
Matthew Tkachuk is contemplating surgery, potentially sidelining him for the start of the season (Getty Images) Matthew Tkachuk, the Florida Panthers forward faces an uncertain start to the season as he weighs potential surgery, but a full-year absence appears unrealistic. With Olympic ambitions, competitive drive, and Florida's roster depth, the expectation is a midseason return rather than sitting out the entire regular campaign. Matthew Tkachuk expected to miss months but not entire season Matthew Tkachuk gutted through a torn adductor and sports hernia to help the Florida Panthers repeat as Stanley Cup champions, even scoring the Game 6 clincher against the Edmonton Oilers. As training camp nears, he's acknowledged that surgery remains on the table — a choice that could sideline him for the opening months. That has sparked armchair plans for a Nikita Kucherov–style long-term injured reserve maneuver, keeping Tkachuk out until the playoffs. Sportsnet's Michael Amato poured cold water on that idea, noting the 2026 Olympic break changes the calculus: 'The flaw with that theory is that the Olympics are in February and there's no way Tkachuk would sit out if he can get himself healthy,' he wrote. The Tkachuk brothers also showed at the 4 Nations Face-Off that they don't pass up USA–Canada chapters. The real timeline: months, not the whole season — and why Florida can still survive the gap A clearer range came from Frank Seravalli's notebook, which pegged recovery at 'three to five months.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paras Sector 59 Gurgaon | Luxury Awaits at Paras Floret Paras The Florett Book Now Undo If Tkachuk opts for surgery around camp, that projects a return somewhere between late winter and early spring — disruptive, yes, but hardly a season-long exile. In the meantime, Florida can lean on its layered spine and bank the cap flexibility from LTIR to add stopgaps, then reinsert a fully weaponized Tkachuk for the stretch run. Tkachuk himself hasn't slammed the door on an earlier window, telling ESPN's Greg Wyshynski he is 'still hoping to hit the ice as soon as possible,' adding: 'If I do get the surgery, it definitely will be the first two, maybe three months (of the season) if that's the case. But it's still undecided at this point.' During his Cup day in St. Louis, Tkachuk visited St. Louis Children's Hospital and local first responders before celebrating with his family. At the police station, he quipped, 'Hopefully that's my last time in a cell unless it's with the Cup again another time.' That blend of competitiveness and community is exactly why a voluntary year-long sit-out never passed the smell test. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Nazem Kadri voices frustration after the 2026 Winter Olympics camp snub
Nazem Kadri voices frustration after the 2026 Winter Olympics camp snub(Image Via Twitter) The buzz is now around Hockey Canada's arrangements for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, with a lineup of stars getting set for the orientation camp in Calgary. However, the exclusion of Nazem Kadri from the Calgary Flames has been a matter of discussion in hockey circles. At age 34, Kadri is a player with an important offensive presence, but not having been called to camp might be the biggest and immediate threat to his Olympic dream. The seasoned center sees this as an opportunity lost to don the Maple Leaf for hockey's biggest stage. Nazem Kadri's consistency is unrecognized by Hockey Canada Nazem Kadri Olympic Snub? Flames Star Says 'I Deserve a Chance!' Since the 2022–23 season was his first with the Flames, Nazem Kadri appeared as one of the most steady contributors for the team. In his last campaign, he had 35 goals and 67 points in every one of the 82 regular-season games. His uninterrupted offensive production stood out, indeed, in the absence of a playoff berth. Being a perennial scorer of 50-plus points throughout the years and only a few games shy of the 1,000-number mark in his NHL career, his exclusion from the 42-man camp selection by Hockey Canada has become a talking point for some; Kadri himself said that he was surprised that he was not provided a fair look, citing his current form as deserving. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Health and comfort: the comfiest slip-on shoes of the year Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo Every Nazem Kadri 2023-24 Regular Season Goal (ALL 29 GOALS) | NHL Highlights The star-studded orientation camp, from August 26–28, will feature the likes of Connor McDavid and all of the players from the 4 Nations Face-Off victorious roster. While Kadri gets to watch familiar names prepare for Olympic contention with an empty liquor bottle in hand, thus distilling his frustration, he says that he stands in top physical shape, ready with the mindset, eager to prove himself should the chance arise. Still, it looks like the selectors opted to sideline him. Kadri is focusing on community impact beyond the ice While the Olympics remain a personal goal, Kadri has turned to working toward hockey inclusivity with the Hockey Diversity Alliance to see that marginalized youth are granted opportunities to enter the sport. Before the HDA SummerFest in Toronto, Kadri said he felt proud watching these kids play hockey, many of whom are now into competitive hockey. The athlete is committed to leaving a legacy beyond goals and assists, his impact extending far beyond Team Canada selection. He continues to perform for Calgary on the ice as he promotes causes for diversity and accessibility in hockey. Whether Hockey Canada decides to go for him or not, it is his dedication that will inevitably carve a niche for him in the sport. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
