The Congress leader, asserting that the survey is largely accurate, appealed to the opposition parties not to create confusion over the survey.
"The Muslim community comes under the minority list when compared with Hindus, which includes Vokkaligas and Lingayats," he said, while addressing a gathering of Sarakarada Nade Karyakartara Kade, a state govt event, in Mudigere on Tuesday.
The survey is not a caste census, but the details of the caste were mentioned to obtain empirical data.
The Supreme Court directed the collection of empirical data as it is necessary to provide

, Hegde, who was a member of BJP before he switched over to Congress, said.
Hegde said the state's population would be 18 to 20 crore if the claims of all the communities were taken into consideration. As per the 2015 census, the population was approximately 6.35 crore, and the survey recorded the details of 5.95 crore individuals.
Nearly five crore people come under Hindus, and the remaining population are Muslims, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, and thus minorities, he explained.
He denied that castes were divided and claimed that all the sub-castes were brought together and figures were in order. Teachers and officials, under the leadership of respective deputy commissioners, conducted the survey. The data was computerised and stored safely by Bharat Electronics.

Based on the data, he and his team prepared a report and submitted it, he said.
According to Hegde, when Kantharaj was chairman of the commission, the govt brought in an amendment to a law to conduct the survey. He also denied the allegation that the member secretary did not sign the survey report and said the official did not sign the interim report.

California's Newsom, Pelosi back Texas Democrats as GOP warns of more escalations over walkout
SACRAMENTO: California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared shoulder-to-shoulder Friday with Texas Democratic lawmakers in a show of support for their nearly weeklong walkout, which blocked a vote on congressional redistricting maps sought by President Donald Trump in a widening national battle over US House control. Texas has been the epicenter of Trump's push to gerrymander congressional maps to shore up Republicans' narrow House majority before next year. But the standoff is threatening to spill into other states — including California, New York, Florida and Indiana — in an emerging proxy war for control of Congress in 2026. California is moving toward a special election in November that Democrats hope could slash five Republican-held House seats in the liberal-leaning state, in direct response to the maneuvering in Texas. 'We are trying to defend democracy, as opposed to see it destroyed district by district,' Newsom said amid the crowd of lawmakers at the governor's mansion. 'There are no rules for Donald Trump.' Pelosi defended the Texas walkout, calling it 'self-defense for our democracy.' She said Democrats will not let Trump 'pave over' free and fair elections in the country. Newsom, Pelosi spotlight high-stakes in battle over House lines The appearance of nationally prominent Democrats Newsom — a potential 2028 presidential candidate — and Pelosi underscored the increasingly high stakes for a deeply divided Washington. Earlier Friday the Texas House failed to meet a quorum for the third time this week as Democratic lawmakers continued to stay away from Austin. Texas Republicans had warned they would escalate efforts to end the walkout if defiant Democrats do not return to the Capitol. But the lawmakers who bolted for points across the country Aug. 3 still were not back for Friday's scheduled House floor vote. Frustrated Republican leaders continued to ratchet up the pressure, including new and expanding efforts to try to remove Democratic lawmakers from office and seeking help from the FBI to assist state troopers trying to find them. 'We have all hands on deck, we are continuing to explore' options to force Democrats home, Speaker Dustin Burrows said after the chamber failed to reach a quorum. 'We will keep pressing forward until the job is done… Each one of you knows eventually you will come back.'

Government arm-twisting villagers for Siang mega dam: Congress in Arunachal
GUWAHATI The Arunachal Pradesh unit of Congress has accused Pema Khandu's Bharatiya Janata Party government of arm-twisting villagers to support the Siang Upper Multi-purpose Project (SUMP) in the central part of the State. There is no official word on the size of the hydropower project. Still, activists and villagers fearing large-scale displacement claim SUMP would entail a mega dam across the Siang River to generate 11,500 megawatts of electricity. India is reportedly pushing the project as a counterweight to China's planned 60,000 MW project across the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet's Medog county. The Yarlung Tsangpo is the upstream of Siang, which meets two other rivers – Dibang and Lohit – in Assam to flow down as the Brahmaputra up to the Bangladesh border. 'Central forces have been stationed in the Siang River belt to facilitate pre-feasibility surveys for the project. These forces are harassing innocent villagers, underscoring the government's dictatorial approach,' Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Bosiram Siram said in the State's capital, Itanagar, on Friday (August 8, 2025). He urged State government representatives to visit the Siang belt for feedback from the villagers instead of speaking on behalf of the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). 'The voices of the people, who will become landless if this project is executed, must matter,' he said. Anti-dam activists and members of the Siang Indigenous Farmers' Forum have been accusing the government of luring or forcing some villagers to sign agreements in support of the SUMP. The National Hydropower Corporation has been assigned to conduct a pre-feasibility survey for the SUMP, estimated to cost ₹1.13 lakh crore, under heavy security cover. In December 2024, more than 350 environmentalists, journalists, scientists, and civil society organisations submitted a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to direct the government to withdraw security forces from the area. However, Chief Minister Khandu defended the SUMP as a much-needed 'defensive measure' against the sudden release of water by China from the Medog project after its completion. Mr Siram also urged the State government to scrap the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978. Adherents of indigenous faiths in the State want the Act implemented to protect the culture, heritage, and belief systems of the tribal people. 'A law that creates division among the tribal people should not be implemented at any cost. There is no need for this law. Outsiders are trying to make us fight among ourselves based on religion. We should not let Arunachal Pradesh become another Manipur,' he said.

Murder case convicts booked for consuming liquor on way back from court in Kerala
The purported CCTV footage showing Suni, Shinoj and Mohammed Shafi consuming alcohol in a hotel while being escorted back to Kannur Central Prison from Thalassery Additional District Court triggered a political controversy in the state recently. Kannur (Kerala), Aug 9 (PTI) Kodi Suni and two others convicted in the sensational T P Chandrasekharan murder case of 2012 have been booked for allegedly consuming alcohol in a public place while being escorted back to prison after appearing in a court in connection with a different case, police sources said on Saturday. The opposition Congress was already accusing the Left government of giving undue favours to the Chandrasekharan murder case convicts in jail and granting them parole, violating norms. Though the alleged incident of convicts consuming alcohol happened in June, the police are yet to register a case. As the issue triggered a row, three police personnel have been suspended in connection with the incident. The case was registered under sections 15 (C) (prohibits consumption of liquor in public places) and 63 (for offences not covered otherwise) of the Kerala Abkari Act (prohibition act), police added. As per the FIR, the accused have violated the existing Abkari rules by consuming liquor publicly in the car parking area of a hotel here on June 17. Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader Chandrasekharan was brutally hacked to death at Onchiyam in Kozhikode district on May 4, 2012, by a gang of assailants, with leaders of the ruling CPI(M) facing allegations of conspiracy in the incident.
