Jack Graham suspended for homophobic slur but why the Eagle midfielder chose to self-report

Time of India13-07-2025
West Coast Eagles
midfielder
Jack Graham
has been suspended for four matches by the AFL after admitting to using a homophobic slur against a Greater Western Sydney (
GWS
) opponent on July 4. The incident occurred during the second quarter of the Eagles' Round 17 game against the Giants at Optus Stadium, Perth.
The AFL and the club described the incident as 'highly offensive' and 'completely unacceptable.'
Graham voluntarily informed the Eagles about his use of offensive language. The club then reported the matter to the AFL's Integrity Unit for an investigation.

Reduced suspension
The AFL said the suspension could have been longer if
Graham
hadn't taken accountability and self-reported the incident.
In its official statement, the AFL condemned the remark, stating that it 'demeans and denigrates persons regardless of their sexuality.' The league reiterated that homophobia has no place in the sport or the wider community.
Live Events
As part of his penalty, Graham will also undergo education through the
Pride in Sport program
.
Graham issued a public apology, saying, 'I am very remorseful for the word I used and know such language has no place in our community or our game. I made a mistake and need to be better. I will prove that through my actions going forward.'
He also personally apologized to the GWS player involved, the Giants club, and directly to AFL CEO Andrew Dillon.
Why did he choose to come forward?
The 27-year-old midfielder, who previously played for Richmond, said he took full responsibility for his behavior. His decision to report himself may have two reasons: self-accountability and personal ethics to acknowledge wrongdoing and face the consequences, or it may also align with the AFL's recent push to encourage accountability and uphold respect and inclusion within the game.
Club and AFL respond
West Coast Eagles CEO Don Pyke said the club was 'very disappointed' by Graham's conduct. 'The word Jack used is completely unacceptable and does not align with societal and club values,' Pyke stated.
AFL Head of Integrity and Security Tony Keane added, 'Everyone understands the word he used is both hurtful and totally unacceptable in any setting. This incident shows there is still more to be done to make our game safe and inclusive for all.'
Graham will miss the Eagles' next four matches, including clashes against Port Adelaide, his former club Richmond, Fremantle, and Melbourne. He will not be eligible to play at any level of football during the suspension.
The AFL has made clear it will continue to review each case individually, but it hopes incidents like this reinforce the importance of respect, accountability, and inclusion in Australian football.

Joe Root opens up on chasing Sachin Tendulkar for most Test runs: ‘He made his Test debut before I was born'

Ever since Joe Root surpassed former Australian Ricky Ponting in the second place in the list for Test runs at Old Trafford on Friday, the England batter is being touted to break legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record in next two-three year's time. But the former England captain isn't much interested in chasing individual records and instead focussed on winning matches for the national team. Starting the fourth Test against India at fifth spot, Root jumped three positions to be placed just behind Tendulkar to become the second-highest run scorer in Tests. On his way to 13409 runs, Root surpassed Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ponting and is just 2512 behind Tendulkar's tally of 15921. Asked about chasing Tendulkar for the record, Root stated it's not something the England stalwart will focus on. 'Those sorts of things should look after themselves," Root told BBC. "The focus has to be about winning games… He made his Test debut before I was born. "To be playing on the same ground as him and to get the chance to play against him was incredibly cool. (He was) someone you grew up watching, admiring, trying to learn from… To get to play in a series where he was still playing was really quite a memorable experience that I'll never forget," added the right hander. Earlier on Friday, former England captain and currently a cricketer-turned-expert, Michael Atherton asserted that Root can reach Tendulkar if he continues in the same form in the next two-three years. 'You never know what lies ahead in terms of freak injuries, sport can be a cruel mistress, but given a fair wind he should be up to Tendulkar in around two and a half years,' Atherton told Sky Sports. Riding high on Root (150) and captain Ben Stokes' (141) hundreds, England were all out for 669 in reply to India's first innings total of 358. However, India lost both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks. Currently, KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill are in the middle, fighting for the visitors to save the Test match.

Indias half-marathoners fail to impress in WUG; relay teams show promise

Rhine-Ruhr, Essen (Germany), Jul 26 (PTI) India's strong presence in half-marathon came to naught as none of the 10 runners in men's and women's sections could finish on the podium, even as a couple of personal best were recorded on a disappointing penultimate day of the World University Games here Saturday. The Indian men's and women's 4X400m relay teams though set season's best times to qualify for the finals in style. Among the five Indian distance runners in the men's section, Mohit and Mohit Choudhary, recorded personal best times of 1:04:08 seconds and 1:06:51 seconds to finish sixth and 21st respectively in the gruelling event. Three others, Arun Dhansing Rathod (26th), Shubham Baliyan (32nd) and Ankit Deswal (36th) clocked 1:07:19 sec, 1:08:32 sec and 1:09:07 sec respectively, raising a question mark on the selection of the distance runners. Shinsaku Kudo smashed the WUG record in the event, finishing the race in 1:02:29 seconds to take the gold, while Ramazan Bastug (1:02:35) of Turkey took the silver and another Japanese Ryuto Uehara (1:02:39 sec) bagged the bronze. The women's half-marathon too didn't throw up any interesting results for the Indian runners with Jyoti clocking 1:21:22 seconds to finish 21st in a field of 27 runners. China's Ma Xiuzhen finished a good nine minutes ahead to take the gold with a personal best time of 1:12:48 seconds. The men's 4x400m relay team clocked a season's best time of 3:06.56 seconds to finish second behind Poland in Heat 2, while the women's 4x400m quartet also recorded a season's best of 3:35.12 seconds to make the title round placed second in Heat 1. India's triple jumper Poorva Sawant's campaign ended in the preliminary round with the 22-year-old from Mumbai finishing ninth in qualification with a leap of 12.82 metres. Kiran Mhatre finished 16th and last in the 5000m event, timing 15:16.57 seconds, with the gold going to France's Arthur Gervais, who timed 15:02.00. It was a dispiriting show in women's triple jump qualification with Sandra Babu finishing 11th in a 12-player preliminary round with a lunge of 11.98m. India could add to their medals tally in athletics later in the day with Praveen Chithravel in contention in the triple jump final. India has so far won five medals, including a gold, silver and three bronze medals.
