Panthers at Oilers Stanley Cup Final Game 2 picks, odds: Can Florida even the series?
For the second time in two years, the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers meet in the Stanley Cup Final. After Florida won last year, the Oilers are out for revenge and took the first game 4-3 in overtime. After Edmonton took Game 1, the series odds moved from -125 in the Oilers' favor to -250, but those odds belie how closely contested the first bout was. Our experts lean toward a Florida win in Game 2. Advertisement Oilers lead series 1-0 Series odds: Oilers -250, Panthers +200 Game 1 between the Oilers and Panthers was an absolute banger. Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring early, which already gave this series a different feel from 2024 after he was held off the board in seven games against the Panthers last year. But Florida responded — first with a goal from Sam Bennett that was reviewed (and upheld) for goalie interference, then with a power-play goal from Brad Marchand on the corresponding delay of game. That sequence could have changed the tone of Game 1. Instead, despite Florida taking control of the second period, the Oilers clawed their way back. Viktor Arvidsson pulled Edmonton within one, then Mattias Ekholm tied the game in the third period. That forced overtime, where there were chances on both ends of the ice. Both Stuart Skinner and Sergei Bobrovsky put up quality starts for their teams. But with 31 seconds left on the clock in the first OT period, Connor McDavid set up a Draisaitl power-play goal to win the game. It was a strong start to what should be a tightly contested series. So, how will the Panthers respond? The series may be in Edmonton for another game, but playing on the road generally hasn't hurt Florida. The Panthers are 8-3 on the road this postseason. While the power play is already clicking, the key to Game 2 will be getting more even-strength scoring from the middle-six, since Aleksander Barkov's line's primary focus is slowing down McDavid and Draisaitl. The Oilers, on the other hand, will likely start the game with those two driving their own lines again and adjust later as needed. UFC Cuts Ties With Hakeem Dawodu In Latest Roster Sweep
There are three things that will lead to a release in the UFC: losing, consistently missing weight, and inactivity. Hakeem Dawodu had a touch of all three issues over the last few years, and that's likely why Dana White and the UFC chose to part ways with the veteran. The 33-year-old hasn't fought since he lost a unanimous decision to Cub Swanson in August 2023. The loss to Swanson was his third in four fights. Dawodu missed weight by 3.5 pounds in September 2022 ahead of his unanimous decision loss to Julian Erosa. Between the losses to Swanson and Erosa, Dawodu withdrew from a scheduled fight with Lucas Almeida in June 2023. Overall, it hasn't been an especially strong last few years, and despite Dawodu's talent and relative youth, the promotion elected to remove him from the roster. Dawodu's best years as a mixed martial artist took place when he was a part of the World Series of Fighting promotion. From 2014–2017, Dawodu compiled a record of 7-0-1 with WSOF. That run and the folding of WSOF led Dawodu and others like Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson, Marlon Moraes, and Justin Gaethje to sign with the UFC. Dawodu didn't have immediate success with the UFC. In fact, he lost his first fight with the promotion via submission, and it took just 39 seconds for Danny Henry to submit him. However, Dawodu bounced back and won his next five fights in the UFC. Dawodu wouldn't take another loss until he dropped a unanimous decision in June 2021. In February 2022, Dawodu rebounded with a win over Michael Trizano for what will likely be his last victory with the promotion. In addition to Dawodu's lack of activity and recent victories, he also rarely won fights by stoppage. His lone stoppage win in the UFC was a head-kick KO of Yoshinori Horie in July 2019. From the looks of Dawodu's Instagram account, he appears to be training, but it is unclear if he is still interested in competing. As it is, Dawodu, Kron Gracie and Connor Matthews were separated from the promotion. Looking ahead to Saturday, UFC 316 takes place in Inglewood, California at the Intuit Dome. Here's a look at the complete card.

New York Liberty Remain Undefeated With Historic Win Against Washington Mystics
New York Liberty Remain Undefeated With Historic Win Against Washington Mystics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The defending WNBA champion, New York Liberty continue to pace the league. After taking down the Washington Mystics 86-78 on Thursday night, the Liberty remain undefeated. They now sit at 8-0 on the season, tied for the best record in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx. Advertisement The Liberty seek to become just the fourth team in WNBA history to win back-to-back championships. While their roster consists of multiple MVP candidates, they win with a balanced attack. Their franchise's recent accomplishments also rival the best New York has to offer in the sports world. With a city that dons multiple professional teams in nearly every sport, the Liberty are the most recent to win a championship. As deep as New York sports history runs, the Liberty stand as the only team to hoist a championship trophy in more than a decade. The New York Giants are a distant second, last winning a Super Bowl in 2012. With that in mind, the Liberty's 8-0 start to this season is not only impressive, it's down right historic. As per @statmuse on X, the Liberty are the first professional New York basketball team to start a season 8-0. In the history of professional basketball (NBA, ABA, and WNBA), no team has ever gotten off to a start like the Liberty. Advertisement Statistically speaking, the Liberty are the best team in the WNBA this season on both sides of the ball. The Liberty's offense leads the league in points per game (91.1). Their defense leads the league in points allowed (72.1). And they also lead the league in field goal percentage (48.6) as well as blocks per game (5.7). Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
