SIR, Op Sindoor in focus as Monsoon session of Parliament begins on Monday
The government told the Opposition parties it would reply to demands for a response on American President Donald Trump's statements on Operation Sindoor, including that he had brought about the truce between India and Pakistan or that at least five jets were shot down during the hostilities.
The smaller constituents of the INDIA bloc, especially the Left parties, had disagreed with the Congress strategy in the past to disrupt proceedings and stage a walkout rather than try and pin the government down on issues. Sources in the Opposition camp said the Congress had heeded the concerns of the Left parties.
The Monsoon session will be held between July 21 and August 21, with 21 scheduled sittings. There will be no sittings held between August 12 and August 18. The government has listed seven pending Bills for consideration and passing, including the Income Tax Bill, which the Lok Sabha Select Committee will present on Monday.
The government has also listed eight bills for introduction, consideration and passing.
On Sunday, after the customary meeting of all parties on the eve of a session, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told the media over 100 MPs had signed a notice to bring a motion in Parliament for the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma (now with the Allahabad High Court), crossing the threshold of support required for tabling the impeachment exercise in the Lok Sabha.
At the meeting, parties flagged issues such as the SIR in Bihar and the Pahalgam terror attack, and demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on Trump's 'ceasefire' claims. Rijiju said the government was open to discussing all issues in Parliament, such as Operation Sindoor.
In the context of crimes against women in Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal's Sasmit Patra said the Centre could not escape responsibility from the 'failing' law and order in states and Parliament should debate it.

Congress whip to LS MPs sparks intrigue as Tharoor's participation in Operation Sindoor debate remains uncertain
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Sunday issued a three-line whip to its MPs as the Lok Sabha is set to begin a three-day debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor on Monday. After a week-long standoff between the Opposition and the Treasury benches, the Monday session is expected to be stormy as some Opposition parties are expected to raise the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar as well. While Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to open the discussion from the ruling camp, the principal Opposition party Congress has a line-up of Deputy Leader of Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi and K C Venugopal on the opening day. According to party sources, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi may speak on Tuesday. The party has been allotted three hours to speak on the issue. Sources said that besides Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be speaking on the issues, amid indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may intervene to convey his government's track record of a "robust" stand on national security. The whip issued by Chief Whip Kodikunnil Suresh said, 'Be present positively in Lok Sabha from 11:00 AM onwards till adjournment of the House on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday and support the Party Stand. This may be treated as three-line whip.' The Lok Sabha Secretariat has listed a "special discussion on India's strong, successful and decisive 'Operation Sindoor' in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam" in its agenda for Monday.

Three, including two nuns, held for human trafficking in Chhattisgarh
RAIPUR: Three persons, including two Catholic nuns who had reportedly come from Agra, were arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Durg on Friday for alleged human trafficking amid suspicion of coerced religious conversion. They were remanded to 14-day judicial custody, a police officer said. The trio were booked under BNS Section 143 (trafficking of persons). All three were caught accompanying three young women aged between 18 and 20 years, hailing from Narayanpur district in south Bastar, after Bajrang Dal activists spotted them at Durg railway station. The group was allegedly preparing to travel to Agra for training and subsequent employment opportunities. Bajrang Dal members staged demonstrations at the Durg GRP police station demanding strict action against those allegedly involved in human trafficking and forced religious conversion. 'The nuns had come to Durg merely a day before without any valid reason. They were about to board a train along with the rescued girls to Agra when we spotted them,' said Ravi Nigam, a Bajrang Dal leader. Members of the Christian community also gathered at the GRP Durg station and were seen defending the nuns. The two nuns — Preeti Marry and Vandana Francis — who had come from Agra, along with Sukhman Mandavi from Narayanpur, were produced before a local court in Durg and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. The rescued girls have been sent to the Sakhi One Stop Centre in Durg. Meanwhile, Congress MP K C Venugopal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai seeking stringent action against the perpetrators. He also urged the government to uphold constitutional rights and religious freedom in the state. The Congress leader alleged that BJP-ruled states are witnessing a rampant rise in attacks on minorities. 'The latest attacks by Bajrang Dal goons on two Catholic nuns in Durg, Chhattisgarh, point to a tacit support for such hate crimes from the ruling establishment,' Venugopal wrote on X.

Letters to The Editor — July 28, 2025
The world and Gaza It is unfortunate that the world does not seem to be moved by the fact that people of Gaza are facing acute starvation as a result of a genocidal war. Words such as 'humanity', 'conscience', 'empathy' and 'altruism' ring hollow in the context of collective global inaction. Aid airdrops without lifting the ground blockade of aid deliveries are only an eyewash and do not reverse the deepening crisis. The lack of disquiet is a reflection of the times we live in. G. David Milton, Maruthancode, Tamil Nadu Donald Trump's record Donald Trump's yearning for the Nobel Peace Prize is no secret. Yet, his record speaks more of ambition than achievement. In Ukraine, he hints at ending the war 'in 24 hours', but neither Kyiv nor Moscow trusts his intentions. In Gaza, his stance is even less persuasive — offering little beyond hollow statements, while giving Israel a carte blanche. His 'credit' for an India-Pakistan détente lacks conviction, repeated more out of habit than belief. Frustrated, Mr. Trump turns to Africa and Southeast Asia to tout his role in conflict de-escalation, but even these claims lack depth. And no less is his singular pursuit to be reckoned as a pioneer in dismantling the global economic order. R. Narayanan, Navi Mumbai Sharp contrast The narrative in the article, 'On a tight leash in Mumbai' (Magazine – 'Openpage', July 27), evoked no surprise, as the stray dog menace exists across India. Last year I had been to Tennessee, in the U.S. to visit my son. There are no street dogs there but only pet dogs. When they are taken out for a walk there is a proper leash. The owner has to pick up waste with a scoop, which is then transferred to a cover and placed in a waste bin that is marked for such waste. A lot is to be learnt from foreign countries. D.
