Congress whip to LS MPs sparks intrigue as Tharoor's participation in Operation Sindoor debate remains uncertain
After a week-long standoff between the Opposition and the Treasury benches, the Monday session is expected to be stormy as some Opposition parties are expected to raise the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar as well.
While Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to open the discussion from the ruling camp, the principal Opposition party Congress has a line-up of Deputy Leader of Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi and K C Venugopal on the opening day. According to party sources, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi may speak on Tuesday. The party has been allotted three hours to speak on the issue.
Sources said that besides Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be speaking on the issues, amid indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may intervene to convey his government's track record of a "robust" stand on national security.
The whip issued by Chief Whip Kodikunnil Suresh said, 'Be present positively in Lok Sabha from 11:00 AM onwards till adjournment of the House on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday and support the Party Stand. This may be treated as three-line whip.'
The Lok Sabha Secretariat has listed a "special discussion on India's strong, successful and decisive 'Operation Sindoor' in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam" in its agenda for Monday.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of SC hearing on special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, opposition INDIA bloc on Sunday alleged it is an "exercise of exclusion", questioning data released by Election Commission after SIR's first phase that 66 lakh people might be excluded on grounds such as "deceased, permanently shifted or untraceable. "Recent pressers of EC and refusal to accept Aadhaar, EPIC, and ration card as valid documents clearly point towards the fact that the entire SIR process is a citizenship verification process," he alleged. EC responded by asking why opposition parties are trying to create "an impression that the draft list is the final list, which it is not, as per SIR order. " It said it is not able to understand the big fuss now, when a full one month period from Aug 1-Sept 1 is available to point out wrongful inclusion or wrongful exclusion of any name. "Why don't the parties ask their not 1.6 lakh booth level agents to submit claims and objections from Aug 1-Sept 1 ?" it asked. Gearing up to step up the protests both inside and outside Parliament, Congress, RJD, CPM and CPI (ML)-Liberation leaders at a presser expressed fear that many more people will be excluded from rolls during the verification process ahead due to lack of documents like birth, caste and domicile certificates. RJD MP Manoj Jha said the whole SIR process is based on presumptions. "Clearly, opacity has become the hallmark of EC functioning," Jha said. "There is no time or option for the right to appeal for people who will be excluded in the whole process. There are also numerous reports of people found alive who are included in the dead list," he alleged. On the number of deceased, CPI (ML)-Liberation Dipankar Bhattacharya said, "Does this mean that in just six months, around 22 lakh people have passed away? So, does this mean the EC's January 2025 summary revision was a flop?"

Bihar's draft poll roll may exclude 66 lakh names: EC
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Sunday said Bihar's draft electoral roll may exclude 66 lakh names as they had either become electors in other states or UTs, were non-existent, did not submit enumeration forms within the July 25 deadline or were not willing to register as electors for some reason or other. Of the 66 lakh electors, 22 lakh were found to be deceased, 36 lakh permanently shifted or untraceable, and seven lakh enrolled at multiple places. Over one lakh did not return their forms by the deadline. "Exact status of these electors will be known after scrutiny of these Aug 1. However, genuine electors can still be added back in electoral rolls during the claims and objections period from Aug 1-Sept 1," EC said in a statement. It said the seven lakh electors found enrolled at multiple places will be retained in only one place. EC underlined that submission of over 7.2 crore forms by electors in Bihar pointed to their "overwhelming participation" in the special intensive revision (SIR) of rolls. No elector be left behind was achieved with SMSes sent to 5.7 crore registered mobile numbers, allowing BLAs to submit up to 50 forms daily, and visits to electors' addresses. Outreach to temporary migrant electors was ensured with advertisements in 246 newspapers. This resulted in action by 29 lakh migrants - 16 lakh filled the form online and 13 lakh downloaded it. Regular involvement of electors and political parties was ensured by sending 10.2 crore SMSes to electors acknowledging receipt of forms. Lists of electors not found at their addresses or whose forms weren't received were shared on July 20 with the parties. On scrutiny of draft roll, EC said digital and printed copies of draft roll of each booth will be shared with political, adding no name can be deleted without notice and speaking order of ERO/AERO, it said.

Muslim hawker assaulted in Meerut; attempt to create fear, says opposition
After a Muslim cloth peddler was brutally assaulted at Fatehpur Narayan village, under Kithor police station limits, in Meerut district, opposition parties alleged on Sunday that the incident was a targeted attack designed to create fear. While villagers and police claimed Arif was mistaken for a thief, the victim's wife alleged that they were being forced to modify the complaint by the police. 'We have submitted a petition; the case is yet to be registered. My husband, who was selling clothes, was beaten, and now we are being pressured to change the petition by the Sub-Inspector,' said Tausima, the victim's wife, in a viral video. The Hindu reached out to the Meerut police, including the Circle Officer, but failed to get any response. Mob attack The incident happened on July 26. The victim, along with one companion, was selling clothes in the village when 10-15 people gathered and began calling him a thief, demanded his Aadhar card, and proceeded to beat him up. He was taken to Meerut Medical College for treatment. 'This incident shows that there is a complete breakdown of law and order in the state. No one has the right to take the law into their hands; some people emboldened by the dispensation are attempting to create a Jangal Raj kind of situation in U.P.; it is a lynching attempt that aims to create fear,' said Imran Masood, Lok Sabha MP and a senior Congress leader. Lok Sabha MP from Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari, said, 'I condemn this incident, it is clear that the accused have no fear of the administration and rule of law. They know no proper action will be taken, and this encourages them to attack poor Muslims.'
