What Women Should Know About Their Heart, Kidney and Metabolic Health
MISSION, Kan., May 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- (Family Features) Some women may be unaware they're living with risks for heart disease, kidney disease and metabolic conditions like diabetes, which drive risk for cardiovascular disease.
The interplay among these conditions is called cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, according to the scientific experts at the American Heart Association. Consider these facts women should know about CKM syndrome.
Cardiovascular Disease is the No. 1 Killer of WomenCardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes heart disease and stroke, affects nearly 45% of women ages 20 and older, and 1 in 3 women will die from it, according to the association.
"Despite heart disease being the leading cause of death for women, most women are not aware of their risk for heart disease," said Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, American Heart Association volunteer and a member of the science advisory group for the association's CKM Health Initiative, supported by founding sponsors Novo Nordisk and Boehringer Ingelheim and champion sponsor DaVita.
Women may develop heart disease differently than men and experience symptoms uncommon in men. Women are more likely to have blockage in smaller blood vessels around the heart and, while chest pain is the most common heart attack symptom, women are more likely than men to experience pain in the arms, jaw and neck, too.
Early Action is KeyAccording to a study presented at an American Heart Association scientific conference, women with either Type 2 diabetes or chronic kidney disease are predicted to reach elevated risk for CVD 8-9 years earlier than women with neither condition while women with both conditions may reach high risk 26 years earlier.
Risk Factors are ConnectedThe health factors that comprise CKM syndrome are connected. They include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, excess weight, high blood glucose sugar and low kidney function. If something goes wrong in one area, it affects others.
"Knowing your health numbers is critical to optimize your CKM health and prioritize prevention of heart, kidney and metabolic disease," said Khan, who is also the Magerstadt professor of cardiovascular epidemiology and an associate professor of cardiology and preventive medicine at Northwestern School of Medicine.
Since high blood pressure and early stages of kidney disease and diabetes often don't have symptoms, regular screening is necessary to be aware of your risk.
Pregnancy and Menopause Affect Women's CKM Health
Each pregnancy is a window into later heart and kidney health, according to Janani Rangaswami, M.D., FAHA, professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and co-chair of the scientific advisory group for the American Heart Association's presidential advisory that defined CKM syndrome.
Pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension are risk factors for future chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, Rangaswami said.
Changes during menopause also influence long-term heart and metabolic health. This includes declining estrogen levels, increased body fat around the organs, increased cholesterol levels and stiffening or weakening of blood vessels, per the American Heart Association. Early menopause (before age 45) is linked to a higher risk for kidney disease, Type 2 diabetes and CVD.
"Women can mitigate those risks by getting appropriate treatment for their menopause symptoms," Rangaswami said.
Social Factors Affect Women's HealthNegative economic, environmental and psychosocial factors are associated with lower levels of preventive health behaviors like physical activity and healthy eating and higher levels of conditions like obesity and diabetes. Some factors affect women differently than men. For example, marriage is associated with worse health for women, and women are more likely than men to delay medical care because of costs, according to an American Heart Association scientific statement. Women are also more likely to have their health concerns dismissed, Khan said.

National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign starts June 1 WASHINGTON, June 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Incidents involving dog attacks on Postal Service employees rose to more than 6,000 cases last year. As part of the 2025 USPS National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, the organization is offering crucial information on how dog owners can be good stewards for safe mail delivery and ensure the safety of its employees. Help ensure the safety of everyone in our communities." Dog Owners Can Help With Safe Mail Delivery Many of us are dog lovers, but few of us are dog experts. Even dogs that have never shown signs of aggression can react in ways their owners don't expect. They can act without warning on their instinct to protect their owners and their owners' property. Dogs may attack not only to defend their territory, but also when they feel startled, anxious or unwell. It's not just about bad or aggressive dogs — it's about unpredictable moments. Most people know the approximate time their letter carrier arrives every day. Securing your dog before the carrier approaches your property will minimize any potentially dangerous interactions. Keep your dog in a separate room or area away from the door when the mail carrier comes to your house. If you go outside, close the door firmly behind you and make sure it is secured so your dog doesn't slip out or bust through it unexpectedly. If you are outside with your dog while mail is being delivered, make sure your dog is secured away from the mail carrier and on a leash. Never accept the mail from your mail carrier in the presence of your dog. Pet owners also should remind children not to take mail directly from a letter carrier because the dog may view the carrier as a threat to the child. The Cost of a Dog Attack When a postal employee suffers an injury from a dog attack, it can cost the dog owner thousands of dollars because they could be responsible for medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement costs, and pain and suffering for the employee. "Customers may not consider their dog a danger to others, however, to a letter carrier like me, all dogs can be considered a threat when delivering the mail," said Jonah Helfrich, a Blue Bell, PA, letter carrier. "I was recently delivering mail and a dog barged through a door and bit me on the wrist, which required me to seek medical treatment. I strongly encourage all dog owners to take precautions to make sure their dog is secure when mail is being delivered." Mail Carriers Know How to Deliver Safely Mail carriers are trained to observe an area where they know dogs may be present. They are taught to be alert for potentially dangerous conditions and to respect a dog's territory. Mail carriers are trained to: Make a non-threatening noise or rattle a fence to alert a dog if entering a yard; Never startle a dog; Keep their eyes on any dog; Never assume a dog will not bite; Never attempt to pet or feed a dog; and Place their foot against an outward swinging door to prevent a dog from escaping. If a dog attacks, carriers are also trained to stand their ground and protect their body by placing something between them and the dog — such as a mail satchel — and to use dog repellent, if necessary. Mail carriers have tools to alert them to dogs on their routes. A dog alert feature on carriers' handheld scanners can remind them of a possible dog hazard, and dog warning cards must be used during mail sorting to alert carriers to addresses where a dog may interfere with delivery. Mail Delivery Could Be Suspended Because of Unsecured Dog When a carrier feels unsafe, mail service can be stopped. Until the carrier feels safe enough to restart delivery, the mail will have to be picked up at the dog owner's local Post Office. If a carrier feels a house or neighborhood is unsafe to deliver the mail and there is no way to inform residents their mail service has been suspended, the residents would have to contact the supervisor at their local Post Office for more information. The residents would also have to pick up their mail at the Post Office until it is safe to resume delivery. If a dangerous dog issue is not resolved, owners can be required to rent a Post Office box to receive mail. Decisely Notifies Individuals of Data Security Incident
ALPHARETTA, Ga., June 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Decisely learned of a data security incident that may have involved personal and/or protected health information of certain individuals and has taken steps to notify individuals for whom an address could be found. Recently, we learned that some personal and/or protected health information may have been involved in a data security incident we experienced. The incident began on December 17, 2024, when we discovered suspicious activity related to our cloud storage platform. We promptly took steps to secure the environment and began an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the issue. We engaged cybersecurity experts to conduct an investigation into what happened and to assist us with determining whether personal information was accessed or acquired without authorization. The investigation determined that some data may have been acquired on December 16, 2024. We then completed a comprehensive analysis of the data potentially involved to identify what personal and/or protected health information was impacted and to whom it belonged. We also notified associated owners of the data and worked with them to determine contact information necessary to provide this notice of what happened. Please note that we have no evidence of fraudulent misuse, or attempted misuse, of the potentially impacted information. Based on the review of potentially impacted data, the following information may have been affected as a result of the incident: names, dates of birth, phone number, passport number, digital signature, and/or Social Security numbers.
