Formula 1: Canada GP To Remain On Calendar Till 2035 Season

NDTV11 hours ago

Formula 1 has announced that the Canadian Grand Prix will race into its seventh decade following a new four-year agreement with the Promoter and the Governments of Canada and Quebec, that will see the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal remain on the calendar through to 2035. The Canadian Grand Prix is the oldest Formula 1 race held outside Europe, with the 54th edition taking place recently since its inaugural run in 1967. The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, named after legendary Canadian F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve, became the permanent host in 1978 and is loved by drivers and fans alike for its heavy-braking chicanes, the hairpin, and the Wall of Champions.
Four current drivers - George Russell, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso - have all claimed victory at the 4.36 km circuit. Hamilton and Michael Schumacher share the record for most wins at the venue (seven each).
In recent years, Octane Racing Group has significantly modernised its infrastructure and will continue investing to meet Formula 1's global growth. Additionally, the promoter and stakeholders from multiple government bodies have agreed to move the event to an earlier slot from 2026 onwards to support calendar rationalisation.
Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1, said, 'As Formula 1 celebrates its 75th anniversary, it is fitting that we have announced an extension with the Canadian Grand Prix, a race that has such incredible history...I am delighted to confirm that we will continue racing here through to 2035 and that our media rights deal with Bell Media is also extending...Thank you to Octane Racing Group and our Canadian fans. I look forward to more unforgettable moments in Montreal.'
Jean-Philippe Paradis, SVP at Bell and President, F1 Grand Prix du Canada, said, 'We are incredibly proud to confirm that the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada will continue its yearly stop in Montreal through 2035. This reflects the race's iconic status... We're thrilled to offer ten more years of world-class racing and thank all partners and our passionate team.'

Reinhart stars as Panthers crush Oilers to clinch second consecutive NHL Stanley Cup

Sam Reinhart starred with four goals as the Florida Panthers thrashed the Edmonton Oilers 5-1, capturing their second consecutive Stanley Cup title on Tuesday. Florida goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves, while Matthew Tkachuk added a goal as the Panthers secured a 4-2 victory in Game 6 of the best-of-seven series. — NHL (@NHL) by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo After winning their first Stanley Cup last year, the Panthers became the first NHL team since Tampa Bay in 2020-21 to claim back-to-back titles. The Panther defeated the Oilers in last year's final after nearly squandering a 3-0 series lead, but this time left no doubt, dominating the final two games to clinch the series. Live Events — NHL (@NHL) Just 4:36 into the game, Reinhart intercepted a pass from Edmonton's Evan Bouchard at the blue line, slipped past Mattias Ekholm, and beat goaltender Stuart Skinner one-on-one to give Florida a 1-0 lead. It marked the 29-year-old Canadian's league-leading 15th goal of the playoffs, coming a day after being named to Canada's 2026 Winter Olympic team. Tkachuk doubled the lead with 47 seconds left in the first period, taking a feed from Eetu Luostarinen and firing past Skinner. Reinhart struck again with 2:29 left in the second, deflecting an Aleksander Barkov shot after a Carter Verhaeghe rebound to make it 3-0. — NHL (@NHL) The Oilers pulled Skinner for an extra attacker in the third, but Reinhart capitalized, scoring two empty-net goals within a minute to complete a four-goal night. Edmonton's Vasily Podkolzin scored with 4:42 remaining to spoil Sergei Bobrovsky's shutout bid. It also marked the first time since Montreal beat Boston in 1977 and 1978 that a team defeated the same opponent in the final two years in a row. Reinhart became just the fourth player to score seven goals in a Stanley Cup Final, joining legends Jean Beliveau (1956), Mike Bossy (1982), and Wayne Gretzky (1985).

Hockey Canada sexual assault trial: Judge to rule on drunken night that shattered national trust

Justice Maria Carroccia is set to deliver the verdict on July 24 in the sexual assault trial (Image via The Canadian Press) A month after the dramatic closing arguments were delivered in one of the most explosive trials in Canadian sports history, the fate of five former Team Canada players now rests in the hands of Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia. The case stems from a 2018 incident involving multiple hockey players and a 20-year-old woman in a London, Ontario hotel room — an event that has since ignited national debate over consent, trauma, and institutional accountability. The controversial trial involving five former junior hockey players nears its conclusion The five accused — Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, Alex Formenton, and Cal Foote — have all pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault. McLeod faces an additional charge for being a party to the offense. In a powerful closing statement last month, Crown attorney Meaghan Cunningham rejected defense arguments that framed the woman as an instigator. 'It's not only a myth,' Cunningham said, 'but I submit it is not what happened here on the evidence.' The Crown emphasized that drinking, flirting, or dancing should not be interpreted as signs of sexual availability — a point at the heart of this case. Cunningham added, 'At no time did anyone on any of the evidence here attempt to engage in a sincere conversation with (the woman) about what she truly wanted to happen.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Complete protection with iPru All-in-one Term Plan ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo That, she argued, failed the legal test for consent, particularly considering the woman was intoxicated and in a room with multiple men she did not know. Defense argues the woman was a willing participant, questions trauma timeline In stark contrast, the defense teams maintained the woman was a consenting adult, pointing to her behavior and the video evidence. 'That is consistent with her not being surprised men were in the room and consistent with her wanting to have sex with them,' McLeod's lawyer David Humphrey argued. Further challenging the prosecution's case, Carter Hart's lawyer Riaz Sayani questioned the credibility of delayed trauma, noting that the woman initially did not describe fear or trauma in 2018, only doing so in 2022. Sayani claimed this undermined the Crown's psychological narrative. The moment, caught on camera, has since gone viral, showing the playful camaraderie between Hollywood and the world of Formula 1. He added warmly, 'But what a weekend, dude! Great drive. Oh, that was so fun to watch!" Russell, who had just beaten Max Verstappen in Montreal, jokingly pointed out the matching 'salmon" shirts both he and Pitt were wearing, making the moment even more endearing. Once the banter subsided, Pitt resumed the interview, opening up about the surreal experience of filming within the actual F1 world. 'Can you believe they even let us in?" he laughed. 'It's insane. [They] let us in the world, let us in race weekends, let us embed ourselves in the season." The premiere, which followed the Canadian Grand Prix, featured a stunning display in Times Square, complete with a faux starting grid and real F1 cars. Several drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, and Charles Leclerc, joined Pitt and his co-star Damson Idris, who together portray fictional teammates in the APX GP racing team. Pitt praised Hamilton's involvement, calling it essential to the film's authenticity. 'We just drew from history, you know," he said. 'A little of this, a little of that. And then we had Lewis Hamilton keep us straight, and [we were] off and running." First Published: June 17, 2025, 22:19 IST
