Eight policemen suspended after dance video goes viral during Janmashtami event in Jaunpur
Jaunpur, Aug 19 (UNI) A video showing a dance performance to a Bollywood number during a Janmashtami celebration at Badlapur Police Station has gone viral on social media, leading to disciplinary action against several police personnel. On Tuesday, eight policemen were suspended in connection with the incident. Earlier, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. Kaustubh had already suspended the Station House Officer (SHO), Arvind Kumar Pandey, for negligence. The incident took place during Janmashtami celebrations, where most police stations across the district organized devotional events featuring tableaux, dances, and performances of bhajans (devotional songs). However, in Badlapur, the event took a different turn when dancers performed to the Bollywood song "Mujhe Nau Lakkha Manga De Re," which is typically played at local orchestras, instead of a devotional number. The performance occurred when SHO Arvind Kumar Pandey briefly stepped away from the stage area to participate in religious rituals. During his absence, some off-duty policemen in civil clothes, along with local attendees, requested a dance performance. The dancers obliged by performing on the popular film song, prompting the crowd to cheer and dance along. The move invited trouble after someone in the audience recorded the performance and uploaded the video on social media on Sunday afternoon. The video quickly went viral, drawing public criticism over the inappropriateness of the act in a religious setting and at a police premises. Taking swift action, SP Dr. Kaustubh suspended SHO Pandey the same day for failing to maintain decorum at the event. He also appointed SP City Ayush Srivastava to investigate the matter.
