Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor project: Farmers fume as cheques for land compensation bounce

Farmers are agitated in Patiala after compensation cheques issued by the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) for land acquired under the Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) project bounced multiple times.
The AKIC is a major development initiative, with a significant portion of it passing through Punjab. Specifically, an integrated manufacturing cluster (IMC) is being developed in Rajpura-Patiala, as part of the AKIC. This IMC aims to attract investment and create jobs in sectors like e-mobility, food processing, and more.
The cheques, issued in March as a payment for nearly 61 acres of land acquired across five villages, have now bounced three times, leaving the affected farmers angry and financially distressed. Despite PUDA having already taken possession of the land, compensation remains elusive.
Randhir Singh, a farmer from Pabra village, voiced his frustration: 'The cheque given to me by PUDA has bounced three times. I even tried to deposit it again yesterday — it was rejected once more. This is nothing short of harassment. First, they took our land, and now they refuse to pay us.' He added that his attempts to contact officials have been ignored.
Labh Singh, another aggrieved farmer, echoed the similar sentiment: 'My cheque bounced too. The government has our land. What are we supposed to do now? Where do we go?'
Farmer leader Gurdhiyan Singh from BKU (Ekta Bhateri Kalan) condemned the situation, calling it 'outright harassment'.
'We will meet the Patiala deputy commissioner. The government must act quickly to disburse the compensation and take strict action against those responsible,' he said.
When contacted, PUDA land acquisition collector Sanjeev Kumar attributed the issue to a 'technical glitch at the bank's end'.
'There is no shortage of funds. The issue is being looked into and will be resolved soon,' he said.

1 2 Mohali: In a significant push towards curbing the mushrooming of illegal and unauthorised colonies, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (Gmada) is set to acquire land across the city. The Punjab govt has approved the acquisition of nearly 2,600 acres of land across various sectors for commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential use. The decision was taken during a meeting of the executive committee of Gmada here Friday. It was chaired by state chief secretary KAP Sinha. As per the plan, 236 acres will be acquired in Sector 87 for commercial purposes, 313 acres in Sector 84 for institutional projects, and 321 acres in sectors 101 to 103 for industrial use. The biggest chunk — 1,800 acres — will be acquired in sectors 120 to 124 along the PR-7 road for residential development. The acquisition is expected to begin within a month, pending final approval from chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who also heads the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority. A senior Gmada official confirmed that with this move, no Change of Land Use (CLU) permissions will be granted to private developers in the targeted areas. "This will ensure regulated development and curb the unchecked spread of unauthorised colonies," he explained. Particularly in sectors 120 to 123, several unauthorised colonies have mushroomed across nearly 50 acres in villages like Daun, Raipur, Behlolpur, Barmajra, Tarauli, and Jhampur. These were carved out of agricultural land without CLU approvals or the required official clearances. The chief administrator has directed officials to submit a report within two days to fix responsibility for such violations. Authorities have also been instructed to use Google satellite imagery to identify illegal constructions and take immediate legal action. The move is seen as a firm step towards enforcing urban planning norms and preventing haphazard growth in one of Punjab's fastest developing regions. Attari-Wagah border opens for Afghan trucks stranded in Pakistan
In a relief for traders since the de-escalation of military tension with Pakistan after the May 10 ceasefire, eight trucks carrying perishable goods from Afghanistan, which were among the 150 stranded between Lahore and Wagah border since April 24, crossed into India from the Attari integrated check post on Friday. Official sources said eight trucks carrying dry fruits crossed the Attari-Wagah border, the only land link allowed for trade between India and Pakistan, in the afternoon. Confirming the development, BK Bajaj, the president of the Indo-Foreign Chamber of Commerce, expressed relief and said: 'Eight trucks have come to the Indian side. Others are expected to come soon. We thank the Governments of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.' Pakistan had suspended trade with India, including to and from any third country through its territory, on April 24 in response to the restrictions imposed by India following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, most of them tourists. Following a recent request from the Afghan embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan decided to permit the 150 trucks that had entered its territory before April 25 to cross the border to India. 'Due to the closure of this route, the quality of the commodities was deteriorating. Indian importers make payment in advance to Afghan traders. We would have had to bear a huge loss if this route was not reopened,' said Mukesh Sidhwani, an Amritsar-based dry fruit trader. Porters at the joint checkpost were also relieved. 'Our livelihood depends on cross-border trade. We were staring at a bleak future,' said Gursahib Singh, a porter at the Attari ICP. Traders in Afghanistan had also warned of damage to the commodities due to the continued closure of the Attari-Wagah border, which is one the shortest and cheapest transit routes for trade with India. After the Pulwama terror attack in February 2019 that left 44 CRPF personnel dead, India had restricted imports from Pakistan by hiking the custom duty to 200% from a mere 5%. Since then, import of goods from Pakistan was negligible. In August 2019, when the Narendra Modi-led government abrogated Article 370 that gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan ceased all trade ties with India. The neighbouring country also barred India from exporting goods to Afghanistan, though import of the Afghan goods, such as dry fruits and apples, remained normal even after Taliban took control of the country. Around 40-45 Afghan trucks were reaching Attari daily before the Pahalgam attack.

MLA urges corporate support for Puttaparthi tourism development
Puttaparthi (Sri Sathya Sai district): Aspart of the centenary celebrations of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Puttaparthi MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy appealed to corporate companies to contribute towards tourism development in Puttaparthi under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The MLA, along with former Minister Dr Palle Raghunatha Reddy, Municipal Commissioner Prahlad, tourism officer Narsaiah, representatives from Joy Alukkas Jewellery and TDP leaders inspected several key tourism spots here on Wednesday. The team visited areas including Shilparamam under Puttaparthi Municipality limits, PUDA park site, Chitravathi riverbanks, and the Anjaneya Swamy statue. MLA Sindhura Reddy urged Joy Alukkas representatives to fund for the beautification and development of Chitravathi area and to extend support for the improvement of 14 parks under the PUDA limits.
