Van Wyk and Swartz dominate Algoa National Rally
Round three took place in and around Kariega and Despatch, with round four playing out in the Longmore Forest.
In Friday's third round action, Benjamin Habig and Barry White pushed hard, winning two of the stages with the 'comeback kids' Nico and Juandre Nienaber taking the final stage win after having rolled their Hyundai i20 during Thursday afternoon's qualifying run.
The Nienaber brothers misjudged a jump on a high-speed section in the Spiders Web area and hit a marker tyre, which resulted in them cartwheeling numerous times, with their new car landing in a mangled mess.
The true spirit of the Algoa Rally Club was soon evident as many of their members jumped in to assist in sourcing parts and lending panel beating equipment and welders to assist the team in rebuilding the badly damaged Hyundai to ensure it was on the start line on Friday morning.
After eight stages in round three, it was Van Wyk and Swartz on the top step of the podium, followed by Habig and White in second, and the Nienaber brothers in third.
In the Algoa Rally Club Championship, the Nienabers took first place, followed by Zambian visitors Seth and Urshlla Gomes in second, with Neels Vosloo and Rikus Fourie in third.
Round four then moved to the Longmore Forest on Saturday with an early start in freezing conditions that didn't keep the spectators away, even when the forecasted midmorning rain arrived to add an exciting dimension to the well-prepared roads throughout the forest.
Habig and White unfortunately damaged a rear CV Joint in the VW Polo, leaving them with drive to only three of the wheels.
The Nienabers chased hard and entertained the crowd with their fearless, high-speed antics but were unable to match the dominance of Van Wyk and Swartz, who won every stage, leading to them taking their third overall win and extending their lead in the championship.
The Nienaber brothers were second, with Habig and White in third.
In the Algoa Rally Club standings, it was the Nienabers who triumphed, with Wade van Zummeren and Henry Adams in second, and Deon Kretzmann and Jason Schreiber third.

Also, a number of players who featured for the Junior Springboks in their U20 Championship-winning campaign in Italy will get a chance to show what they can do at a higher level. Who's favoured to win this weekend? Of course there will also be an opportunity for punters to get in on the action and each week Betway will give fans a chance to bank some bucks. In the competition opener on Friday night, the Pumas are favourites at 1.16 to beat Griquas, who're at 5.50 to cause an early upset. On Saturday, the Lions are hot favourites at 1.20 to beat the Sharks, who're at 4.50 to win in Joburg, while Western Province are 1.50 to beat the Bulls in the Cape, with the visitors at 2.60 to win. In the final game of the first round, Boland, who're back in the top flight of the competition, are 3.40 underdogs, at home, to beat the Cheetahs, who're at 1.33 to win, according to Betway. It promises to be an entertaining first round of action. These Betway odds correct at time of publishing and subject to change.

Rassie Erasmus to keep standby players in the loop as Springboks reward form for Australia Tests

Image: Timothy Bernard / Independent Newspapers Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has rewarded form players from the recent international matches against Italy and Georgia for the upcoming Rugby Championship matches against Australia. Still, there is no room for several stalwarts. Missing out are Lukhanyo Am, Faf de Klerk, Makazole Mapimpi, Salmaan Moerat, Evan Roos, Neethling Fouche (prop), and Vincent Tshituka as Erasmus trims his squad to 20 forwards and 17 backline players. The Springboks will face the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday, August 16, and again a week later in Cape Town on August 23. 'It's always challenging to reduce the squad, especially given how the expanded group of players put up their hands during the recent home internationals, but we always said we would select a smaller, more manageable squad for the Rugby Championship,' said Erasmus. 'This group includes several experienced players and a few younger guys, who grabbed their chances in the last few Tests, so we are pleased with this squad for the first two matches. 'We have also informed the players on standby of our plans and what we expect from them, so that all of them are ready to step up if needed.' Erasmus elaborated on the composition of the squad, saying: 'We probably have three players who can cover each position, which is important in this competition, so it was a thorough process to narrow down the group to 37 players. 'One of our key pillars as a team is to build squad depth, and there is no better way to see what some of the younger players are capable of than to expose them to some of the top teams in the world.' Erasmus has invited recent Junior Springbok champions Bathobele Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste, and Haashim Pead to train with the senior squad. 'We are tremendously proud of the Junior Springboks for winning the World Rugby U20 Championship, and we were thrilled to see the talent coming through the junior ranks, so we opted to invite three of them to join us to expose them to our structures and the standards required at top international level. 'We believe this camp will benefit them significantly, and we are excited to see how they slot in and train with us. 'Unfortunately, we had to limit the size of the squad to ensure maximum outputs and more individual attention at our training sessions, so although more players could have been invited, we could only select three.' Erasmus expects a completely different challenge in the Championship to that experienced against the Barbarians, Italy, and Georgia: 'Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina are all ranked in the top seven in the world, and if one considers that last year we won the Rugby Championship for the first time since 2019, it is clear that this will be a completely different kettle of fish. 'All three teams have beaten us in the last few years and they play a different style of rugby to the other opposition we have faced thus far, but we are pleased with the foundation we laid in the last few weeks and we know exactly what areas of our game we need to work on going into the Rugby Championship.' Erasmus will announce his squad for the two-match tour to New Zealand in September before making the journey Down Under, where they will face their arch-rivals at Eden Park in Auckland on 6 September, and in Wellington on September 13 respectively. The team will wrap up their campaign with Test matches against Argentina in Durban on Saturday September 27, and in London on October 4.
