Man arrested after collision with EHS ambulance in Annapolis County, N.S.

Annapolis County District RCMP are investigating a two-vehicle collision involving a EHS ambulance in Cornwallis Park, N.S.
RCMP, fire services and EHS responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash shortly after midnight on June 22, an RCMP release said.
Investigators learned a Ford Bronco was traveling east and an EHS ambulance was travelling west when they collided on Highway 1 near Passchendaele Street.
The driver and lone occupant of the Bronco, a 30-year-old man from Cornwallis Park, was arrested at the scene for impaired operation causing bodily harm. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by EHS.
The three paramedics traveling in the ambulance suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The 30-year-old man was later released and is scheduled to appear in Annapolis Royal provincial court on Sept. 8 to face criminal charges and summary offence tickets.
An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

Once she was in the car, the man pulled out what looked like a handgun and threatened the woman before driving to the 600-block of Trafalgar Street, were he sexually assaulted and assaulted her, police say. The woman was able to get out of the car and run to a nearby house, where she contacted a family member to pick her up. She was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police were called. The man is described as Brown, in his 30s, about 5'11, with a medium, fit build and clean-shaven, with shoulder-length thick black hair. He was wearing a t-shirt and black jogging pants, police say. The car he was driving was a silver or grey four-door sedan. "The London Police Service is deeply committed to protecting the safety and well-being of all members of our community. Ensuring public safety is our highest priority and we remain dedicated to providing support to victims," police said in a statement. Officers are appealing to members of the public to help identify the suspect and vehicle involved. Anyone with dash-cam footage or doorbell surveillance footage that could help in the investigation is asked to call police.

Speed a factor in fatal pedestrian crash, Kelowna RCMP say

The crash happened at the intersection of Highway 97 and Burtch Road around 3:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the Kelowna RCMP. Police say the victim was a 33-year-old woman living in the city. The drivers of the two vehicles were taken to hospital with 'undisclosed injuries,' police said, adding there's no suspected impairment. 'We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the individuals who stopped to render assistance at the scene,' said Sgt. Laura Pollock in a news release Monday. 'If you have been affected by this incident and require support, please contact the detachment. Our Victim Services team is available to provide compassionate and professional assistance during this difficult time.' The detachment also asked anyone with dash camera video to call 250-762-3300.

Lawsuit against gunmaker after 2018 Toronto mass shooting certified by court
TORONTO — Survivors of a mass shooting in Toronto's Greektown and their relatives can proceed with a class-action lawsuit against the gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson after Ontario's top court overturned a ruling that had dismissed their motion to certify the claim. Article content Article content Some of the survivors and their families brought a class action against the gunmaker for failing to implement technology that would prevent unauthorized use of the gun, but the claim failed at the certification stage. Article content The motions judge found that the plaintiffs' negligence claim didn't meet one of the criteria for certification, which requires them to propose issues that are common to the members of the class. Article content The Court of Appeal for Ontario has found the motions judge set the bar too high by essentially requiring the plaintiffs to prove their case on its merits at the certification stage. Article content 'The plaintiffs were not required to demonstrate that their negligence claim would ultimately be successful, or even that there was a prima facie case,' the court said in a unanimous decision. Article content 'Rather, they had to show some basis in the evidence that the defendant's failure to include the authorized user technology constituted negligence and caused or increased the risk of harm to the members of the class. And that is very different than proving the case on a balance of probabilities at trial.'
