Over 350 flights at Delhi airport delayed due to bad weather, traffic jams
Delhi airport authorities issued advisories urging travellers to opt for the Metro instead of road transport. The Metro's Magenta Line is connected to the airport Terminal 1 and the Airport Express Line (Orange) connects to Terminal 3.
'Heavy rainfall and waterlogging across the Delhi-National Capital Region since morning led to traffic jams on roads to and from the Delhi airport. Our on-ground teams are working diligently, with all stakeholders to ensure smooth journey of passengers. We recommend that passengers consider alternative modes of transportation, such as the Delhi Metro, to avoid potential delays,' the Delhi airport's post on X said.
Data from the flight tracking website FlightRadar24 showed by 6pm, at least 377 flights were delayed – with an average delay time of 32 minutes. Passengers used social media to share their ordeal, stating flights were missed and cars remained stuck in traffic for several hours – in some cases longer than the actual flight journey.
Among the flights delayed was also a Delhi to Bagdogra flight, after a crew member was unable to reach the airport. The flight eventually departed in the evening. 'A flight crew member got stuck in traffic. This was the only instance of a flight being delayed due to the staff. In other cases, flights were delayed due to the weather,' an airline official said.
A passenger, Arun, posted on X that he was able to move only 2km in three hours. '3 hours for 2 km at Delhi Airport. Missed my domestic flight. @DelhiPolice — this isn't traffic management, it's a masterclass in incompetence. #DelhiAirport,' the post on X said.
Dheeraj Gaur, another user, said he reached office after travelling 6.5km in 1.5 hours. 'The entire Thimayya Marg in the Delhi Cantonment area and the traffic signal outside Airforce Station Palam is choked. People are walking with luggage in hands to reach the airport on time,' said Gaur around 11.30am.
'I've been stuck at Palam Airport Road near Krishan temple for the last two hours. Delhi Traffic Police personnel are nowhere to be seen. It's total chaos here — vehicles are moving left, right and centre. One person was driving on the wrong side, too,' said another, at 1.04pm.
Some people said that the traffic jam was taking up more of their time than the flight duration itself. 'Came in from Indore in an hour and a half to Delhi and am now stuck in traffic for the last two and a half hours at the Delhi airport,' said Venita Kaul on X.

Mumbai: Catching a flight from Terminal 2 just got easier. A newly constructed 100-metre Foot Over Bridge (FOB) now links the CSMIA–T2 Metro Station on Line 3 directly to the airport terminal, allowing passengers to skip road traffic and walk straight from the Metro to the check-in counters. Built 23 metres above ground with strong structural steel, the bridge connects Lift Entry/Exit A1 of the Metro station at ground level directly into the terminal building. The 4.3-metre-wide and 3-metre-high structure sits above the ongoing Metro Line 7A station works, ensuring faster, safer, and seamless transfer for air travellers. "100-metre-long FOB to CSMIAirport T2 from underground Metro 3 station is opened. This facilitates much-needed last-mile connectivity to Mumbai Airport from the Metro station. Passengers no longer need to negotiate busy road crossings, and those carrying luggage will find the connection much easier. The spokesperson added that the construction posed significant challenges as the bridge had to be built high above the ongoing underground Metro works. On July 28, senior officials from the BMC, MMRCL, MMRDA, and Indian Railways met at the civic headquarters to discuss ways of improving last-mile connectivity. The discussions centred on integrating pedestrian infrastructure with the city's expanding underground transit system. One of the first integration projects in the pipeline is a 1-km pedestrian subway linking Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road's parking facility at Haji Ali. A 160-metre arm is also planned to connect to nearby open spaces. BMC and MMRCL have already been working on the alignment since June. A senior official added that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared in the next four months, with the vision of connecting high-density commercial hubs within a 500-m to 1-km radius. PM Modi To Inaugurate Delhi Section Of Dwarka Expressway Tomorrow: Key Details
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) on Sunday. The new infrastructure links are expected to ease connectivity between Noida and Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Travel Time Cut Drastically At present, commuters from Noida to IGI Airport face journeys of over an hour, often longer during rush hour. With UER-2 and the Dwarka Expressway in place, the same trip is expected to take around 20 minutes. Length And Alignment The Dwarka Expressway stretches 29 kilometres in total. Of this, 10.1 kilometres lie within Delhi, while the remaining 18.9 kilometres fall in Haryana. The Expressway links Mahipalpur in the capital to Kherki Daula in Gurugram. Cost And Construction Built at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore, the expressway was developed in four construction packages. It has been designed to handle heavy volumes of traffic and reduce dependence on existing congested corridors. Highway Design The expressway is an eight-lane, grade-separated highway, with a provision for three-lane service roads on both sides. It has multi-level interchanges and underpasses at various junctions, ensuring smoother vehicular movement. Multi-Level Design Nearly three-fourths of the Dwarka Expressway's stretch runs on elevated tracks, keeping it fully segregated from city traffic. Vehicles move across three levels. These include the elevated expressway, surface roads and a network of underpasses. Smart Tolling Plans The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited bids to introduce multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling. Connectivity To IGI Airport A major feature of the project is a tunnel linking the expressway directly to Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Delhi section underwent trial runs of tunnels and underpasses earlier this year, in May, ahead of today's inauguration. Haryana Section Already Operational The Haryana portion of the expressway was inaugurated by PM Modi in March 2024. It is India's first expressway built on single pillars, and comes equipped with multiple service roads and underpasses to aid traffic flow.

Krishna Janmashtami traffic advisory: Traffic restrictions in Captain Gaur Marg, Outer Ring Road, Mahatma Gandhi Marg and…; Check road closures, diversions
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory for August 16, when large crowds are expected at the ISKCON Temple in East of Kailash for Shri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. The plan includes road closures, diversions, and restrictions on heavy vehicle movement in parts of south and southeast Delhi. Raja Dheer Sen Marg, between Captain Gaur Marg and Sant Nagar Traffic Signal, will be reserved for pedestrians during the event. Only vehicles belonging to local residents will be allowed between Captain Gaur Marg T-point and Sant Nagar Traffic Signal. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, including Captain Gaur Marg, Outer Ring Road, Mahatma Gandhi Marg, and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg. Police have urged devotees and visitors to use public transport, especially the Delhi Metro. Those arriving by Metro should get down at NSIC Okhla station and take Captain Gaur Marg to the temple. Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and follow on-ground signs and instructions from traffic personnel. Special arrangements and restrictions The Traffic Police has announced special arrangements and restrictions from 8 a.m. on August 16 to 2 a.m. on August 17 for Shri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations at the ISKCON Temple in East of Kailash. During this period, the movement of heavy, medium, and light goods vehicles will be banned on key stretches. Traffic diversions will be in place: Vehicles from Mahatma Gandhi Marg (Inner Ring Road) towards Captain Gaur Marg Ring Road Crossing will be sent via Ashram or Moolchand. Vehicles from Outer Ring Road towards Captain Gaur Marg Outer Ring Road Crossing will be redirected to Modi Mill Flyover. Traffic from Outer Ring Road at Paras Chowk will be diverted to Modi Mill Flyover or Chirag Dilli. Vehicles from BRT Central School Flyover will be sent towards Chirag Dilli. People are urged to use the Metro or other public transport instead of private vehicles and to follow police instructions to avoid inconvenience. Separately, the Traffic Police has also announced diversions for August 17 in Rohini for a special programme. Roads with full or partial closures will include Bhagwan Mahavir Road, Bawana Road, Kanjhawala Road, Kanjhawala Link Road, and Badsha Dahiya Marg to maintain safety and smooth traffic flow during the event.
