State finances steady in Q1: Fiscal deficit at 1.8% of GSDP as 24 states post Rs 1.5 lakh crore gap; capex surges 28% on strong tax receipts

The combined fiscal deficit of 24 Indian states, accounting for nearly 92% of the country's GDP, stood at Rs 1.5 trillion, or 1.8% of their gross state domestic product (GSDP), in the April–June quarter of FY26, according to ICICI Bank Global Markets. The report said revenue receipts grew 6.5% year-on-year, recovering from a 0.3% contraction in the same quarter last year, ANI reported. The rebound was driven by stronger Own Tax Revenue (OTR), with all major heads except excise duty registering gains. Post-settlement State GST (SGST) collections rose 11.4% year-on-year, while stamp duty, land revenue and sales tax recorded healthy increases, aided by a low base. On the expenditure side, revenue expenditure was broadly flat, but capital expenditure (capex) jumped 28% in Q1, reversing a steep 22% fall in the year-ago period. This capex boost pushed overall expenditure growth to nearly twice last year's pace, the report noted. June 2025 data reflected the base effect, with total receipts up 16.8% year-on-year and revenue receipts rising 15.6%. Tax revenue climbed 14.3%, led by a 28% surge in OTR. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ranked: The 25 Best Cities To Live In The World Learn More Undo SGST collections spiked 37.5%, supported by post-IGST and input tax credit settlements in previous months. While stamp duty growth moderated to 6.2%, sales tax and other taxes rose 36% and 37%, respectively. State excise duty and land revenue increased 8% and 1%. Transfers from the Centre rose 42% year-on-year in June, with grants-in-aid up nearly 50% to Rs 33,200 crore. Capital receipts increased to Rs 3,100 crore, even as non-tax revenue fell 3%. Tribunal orders developer to buy back flat after two decades due to lack of completion certificate

Representative Image KOLKATA: In a landmark judgment, the West Bengal Real Estate Appellate Tribunal (WBREAT) directed a developer to buy back a flat he sold two decades ago. The buyer lived in the flat for 19 years but was unable to do the mutation because the developer failed to get the completion certificate from the civic body. The promoter was asked to not only return the amount paid for the flat but also the stamp duty and registration fee paid by the buyer. The buyer, Sibsankar Koley, resided in the flat on Nagendra Nath Road in Nagerbazar since 2006 and registered the property. However, he was unable to complete the mutation as the developer failed to obtain the Completion Certificate for the G+4 storied building. Additionally, the property was entangled in a legal dispute between the landowner and the developer. The Tribunal set aside an order by the West Bengal Real Estate Regulatory Authority (WBRERA) that dismissed Koley's complaint against the promoter. WBRERA also rejected a plea for directing the developer and the landlady to execute and register a Deed of Conveyance. WBREAT, while allowing the appeal, ordered the promoter to refund the entire amount Koley paid for the flat, including stamp duty and registration fees. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like SRM Online MBA | India's top ranked institute SRM Online Learn More Undo Koley was asked to vacate the flat and return it to the promoter within 45 days. Key takeaways Landowner Renu Bala Paul entered into a development agreement with promoter Satchidananda Mitra of Sona Enterprise in March 2004 for the construction of a G+4 building at Nagendra Nath Road. Sibsankar Koley booked a 940 sq ft flat from the promoter's share in January 2005 and took possession in July 2006, despite the promoter's failure to obtain the Completion Certificate. A dispute arose in 2013 when the landlady filed a title suit at the Barasat Civil Judge Court , which remains unresolved. Koley approached the West Bengal State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission against the promoter and the landlady in 2011. The landlady contested the maintainability of the case and secured favourable rulings from Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court. In February 2017, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in Barasat directed the promoter to execute and register a Deed of Conveyance in Koley's favour. Koley discovered the promoter did not own the flat he "transferred" to him, prompting him to move WBRERA and then WBREAT. The latter asked Mitra to buy back the flat and told Koley to hand over possession in 15 days. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). What? Man gets praise email at work — Hours later, he was fired

Sometimes, life at the workplace is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride— full of highs, lows, and turns you never see coming. For one dedicated employee, the ride went from a peak of recognition to a sudden, crushing drop. The experience was shared by a man in a Reddit post recently and it soon gained much attention online. In the post, the man shared that he had been the quiet backbone of his company, working in the night shift for almost three years. He worked without complaint, without a raise, and without expecting much beyond fair treatment. Then, finally, recognition came. A formal email praising his commitment and performance landed in his inbox. It was a small but meaningful validation of all those sleepless nights. Encouraged by the positive feedback, he decided to ask for something he had patiently waited for— a salary increase. After all, wasn't that the natural next step after years of loyal service? But instead of a conversation about his worth, he received a call that would change everything. The company accused him of using inappropriate language towards a client during a phone call. Shocked and confused, he pushed back. He asked for proof— surely there was a recording. The company routinely kept such calls for quality checks. But this time, the answer was a cold, 'No.' They refused to share any evidence and ended the conversation abruptly, leaving him with nothing but questions. The next day brought an even stranger twist. The owner called him personally— not to apologise, but to add to the confusion. On the one hand, the owner praised his dedication and even said he believed in his potential. On the other, he confirmed the decision: his career with the company was over. And then came the kicker— the owner admitted there was no recorded call to support the misconduct claim. No proof. No clarity. Just the end. Feeling wronged, the employee took his story to Reddit. The post struck a nerve. Many chimed in with advice— call an employment lawyer, keep every email and message, don't speak directly to the company again. Many pointed out that while 'at-will' employment laws allow employers to fire someone without cause, making false accusations could open the door for legal action. His case is still unfolding, but his story is a stark reminder: In the corporate world, praise doesn't always protect you. Even when you're doing everything right, your career can turn upside down in a single phone call. Always know your rights. Always keep records. And never assume that recognition means your position is safe.
