"Big Heart...": Eye On Past Storm, Ex- Maldives Minister Praises India, PM

New Delhi:
A year on from the India-Maldives diplomatic storm - precipitated by comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi by three Maldivian ministers, and geopolitical red flags after the island nation seemed to getting friendlier towards China - ties between the nations appear to have been reset.
Mr Modi will visit Male - the first foreign head of state to be hosted by President Mohamed Muizzu - on July 25 and 26 to inaugurate development projects funded by India, and after the Indian government extended crucial financial support by rolling over the $US 50 million Treasury bill for another year.
He will also celebrate the country's Independence Day and hold bilateral talks with Mr Muizzu, which will certainly include sounding Male out over national security concerns in the Indian Ocean Region.
Ahead of his visit, Maldives' ex-Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid, hailed the past relationship between the countries and India's history as a reliable first responder in times of emergency.
"The relationship between Maldives and India has always demonstrated India is the first responder. Whenever we dial the international line India responds, first," he said.
"This is for many reasons. First and foremost, because Indian people have a big heart... they are most generous. Second, India is so close to Maldives, geographically. Whenever anything urgent and distressful happens in Maldives, India has never let us down..." Mr Shahid said.
Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed made similar comments, pointing to his country's recent economic concerns and saying, "If not for India, we would have gone default."
"We have always maintained an India-first foreign policy but in the past, election cycles have sometimes caused us to swing between a pro-China stance and a pro-India stance," he said.
Mr Nasheed's 'pro-China stance' comment was seen as a direct jab at his successor, Mohamed Muizzu, who has been seen as favouring Beijing over Delhi in his foreign policy matters.
Scheduled for after the trip to the United Kingdom, where an India-UK free trade deal will be signed, the Maldives visit is key, a point underlined by Mr Shahid.
"Despite the diplomatic tension, India decided that its relationship (with Maldives) is people-to-people... governments come and go and political parties change, but the relationship that exists between our two people is on a solid foundation and has never changed," he said.
India and the Maldives share ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, and commercial links dating back centuries. And Delhi was among the first to recognise Male after it secured independence.
But all of that closeness was threatened in November 2023 after Mr Muizzu was elected on the back of a 'India, out' platform that highlighted the removal of Indian military personnel deployed there.
And increasingly friendly ties with China - a Chinese spy ship masquerading as a research vessel was allowed to dock in February 2024 and Mr Muizzu travelled to Beijing to call for more Chinese tourists to his country, a move seen as a snub to Indians - raised red flags in Delhi.
Mr Muizzu, however, continued to insist that India remains a key partner in efforts to secure regional stability, and that he was only working to ensure more opportunities for Maldives.
Fortunately, after months of unease, ties began to improve, beginning with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar's visit to that country in August last year and the Maldives leader's visit to Delhi in October.
Mr Muizzu met PM Modi on that trip, and told an English daily, "The Maldives will never do anything to undermine the security of India. While we enhance cooperation with other countries... we remain committed to ensuring our actions do not compromise the security and stability of our region..."

PM Modi arrives in London, historic India-UK trade deal on agenda; Says 'focus will be on job creation, growth and...' Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached London on Wednesday evening for a two-day trip to the United Kingdom. He said that building a strong bond between India and the UK is important for the world's development. 'I have landed in London. This visit will help make the economic ties between our countries even stronger. The main aim is to support growth, create more jobs, and bring more prosperity to our people. A close friendship between India and the UK is very important for the progress of the world,' on social media platform X. PM Modi was welcomed at the airport by Catherine West, the UK Minister looking after the Indo-Pacific region, along with India's High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, and the UK's High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron. Landed in London. This visit will go a long way in advancing the economic partnership between our nations. The focus will be on furthering prosperity, growth and boosting job creation for our people. A strong India-UK friendship is essential for global progress. — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) July 23, 2025 As he arrived, groups of community leaders, students, and members of the UK Parliament gathered near London to greet him with excitement and warm wishes. Touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in the UK. Their affection and passion towards India's progress is truly heartening. — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) July 23, 2025 'It's a proud moment for both countries, and especially for Indians living in the UK. Everyone is very happy to see the Prime Minister here after a long time. Even though it's a short visit, we're glad we got the chance to welcome him,' said Kuldeep Shekhawat, head of the Overseas Friends of BJP, while speaking to news agency PTI. What's on agenda? During his two-day trip to the UK, PM Modi will hold important talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and also meet King Charles III. Starmer will host him at Chequers, his official country house located just outside London. A major highlight of the visit is expected to be the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and steps to strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). In a statement before leaving India, PM Modi said, 'Our cooperation covers many areas such as trade, investment, technology, defence, education, health, research, environment, and strong connections between our people.' The two leaders are expected to focus mainly on boosting economic ties. Their goal is to support growth, create more jobs, and make trade easier between the two countries. As part of the trade deal, both sides are working to lower or remove taxes on goods they import and export, making products from India and the UK more affordable and competitive. They aim to raise two-way trade to USD 120 billion by 2030. In 2023–24, trade between India and the UK crossed USD 55 billion. The UK is currently India's sixth-biggest investor, having put in around USD 36 billion. Nearly 1,000 Indian companies in the UK employ about 1,00,000 people. Meanwhile, Indian businesses have invested nearly USD 20 billion in the UK. This is PM Modi's fourth visit to the UK since he became Prime Minister. His earlier visits were in 2015, 2018, and 2021 (for the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow). Over the last year, he has also met PM Starmer twice—once at the G20 summit in Rio and again at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, in June.

Renault plans to double India parts sourcing, says MD Venkatram Mamillapalle

Renault plans to more than double component sourcing from India to ₹400 million (about ₹4,055 crore) over the next five years, a senior executive said, as the automaker sharpens focus on making the country a key part of its global supply chain . The company currently buys ₹170 million worth of auto parts from India annually. Renault's move to accelerate component sourcing from India tracks the French automaker issuing a profit warning last week amid weaker-than-expected June sales and headwinds in Europe. It also said it would accelerate cost-cutting measures to improve margins in the second half of this calendar year. "Our ambition is to make India a strong sourcing hub, not only to meet global requirements but also to drive greater value for our Indian supplier ecosystem," Venkatram Mamillapalle, MD at Renault India , told ET on Wednesday. Scaling of component exports will help strengthen the company's supplier base and improve its global competitiveness, he said. The senior Renault India executive was speaking on the sidelines of the introduction of the new Triber on Wednesday. The updated model is likely to challenge Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga and Toyota 's Rumion in the compact MPV segment besides compact SUVs. The Triber is the first of four new models Renault will be introducing over the next two years as part of its $600 million investment plan for the Indian market. The company, which has been a fringe player in the local market with less than a 1% share, is looking to reboot its Indian operations with the new model launches. Mamillapalle noted that the company is moving towards faster decision-making and tighter integration under a unified leadership structure, following a shift from the earlier multi-entity model involving Renault, Nissan, and the Alliance. Dismissing speculation about potential collaborations with Indian automakers, he said, "There is no reason I need a partner. We have our own design, engineering, manufacturing and network. Somebody else may need my assistance - we don't need anybody's." Bloomberg reported on July 4 that Renault is in early discussions with the JSW Group for a potential joint venture. "We are fully committed to the Indian market, and we believe the next phase of growth will be driven by scale, efficiency, and a sharper product focus," he said.
