‘The Bad Guys 2' New On Streaming This Week, Report Says
The animated adventure The Bad Guys 2 — starring the voices of Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina and Anthony Ramos — is reportedly coming soon to digital streaming. Rated PG, The Bad Guys 2 opened in theaters on Aug. 1. The official summary for The Bad Guys 2 reads, 'In the new action-packed chapter from DreamWorks Animation's acclaimed comedy smash about a crackerjack crew of animal outlaws, our now-reformed Bad Guys are trying (very, very hard) to be good, but instead find themselves hijacked into a high-stakes, globe-trotting heist, masterminded by a new team of criminals they never saw coming: The Bad Girls.' Directed by Pierre Perifel, The Bad Guys 2 also stars the voices of Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, Maria Bakalova, Zazie Beetz, Richard Ayoade, Lilly Singh and Alex Borstein. The Bad Guys 2 is expected to be released on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Aug. 19, according to When to Stream. While the streaming tracker is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, When to Stream noted that Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have not announced or confirmed the release date and it is subject to change. When The Bad Guys 2 arrives on PVOD, it will be available on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube for purchase for $29.99. The film was warmly received by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who gave the film an 87% 'fresh' rating based on 94 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the movie reads, 'The Bad Guys 2's crew of reformed rapscallions are still a ton of fun as their latest adventure raises the stakes while maintaining a playful sense of mischief.' The Bad Guys 2 also received a 95% 'fresh' score on RT's Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings. TV networks want in on your ‘watercooler moment.' In fact, they're trying to re-create it
In an age of changing media consumption (and work-from-home) habits, the phrase 'watercooler television' may be something of an anachronism. But as anyone following shows like 'The White Lotus' can tell you, discussing, dissecting and debating hit series never goes out of style. And of all networks, HBO knows how best to capitalize on such buzzed-about moments: The network's 'Inside the Episode' programs have long offered viewers the chance to process shocking plot twists and jaw-dropping deaths. That's where viewers of Season 3 got to hear creator Mike White break down everything from Saxon and Lochlan's drunken exploits to Chelsea and Rick's doomed ending. 'Shows like this are the new watercooler moment,' says Emmy nominee Natalia Echeverria, a creative director at HBO and an executive producer of 'The White Lotus: Unpacking The Episode.' 'We try to anticipate what beats from the episode people will be talking about and then we dive in, giving audiences an inside peek only we can provide.' Owing a debt to post-episode talk shows like 'The Talking Dead' and podcasts like 'Private Joke: The Official How I Met Your Mother Podcast' and 'The Good Place: The Podcast,' such companion series, now commonplace across platforms, have risen in popularity in the last decade. This year, in fact, they make up the entirety of the short form nonfiction or reality series Emmy category. Projects like 'Making of: The Last of Us' and 'Adolescence: The Making of Adolescence' (also nominated) necessarily straddle the line between creative and marketing. They're meant to bridge the gap between a show and its fandom. But, in borrowing the familiar format of making-of documentaries, DVD bonus featurettes, even episodic reviews or recaps, they insist on a vision of television as an art worthy of discussion and dissection. 'I think of these pieces like the movie theater parking lot after a film,' says Badger Denehy, an Emmy-nominated executive producer of 'Making of: The Last Of Us' and an HBO creative director. 'They remind me of that moment when you turn to your friend and dive into all the biggest moments you just watched. It's my favorite type of project because we get to create something for fans as huge fans of the programming ourselves.' For Shannon Ryan, president of marketing for Disney Entertainment Television and an Emmy nominee for 'Only Murders in the Building: Unlocking the Mystery,' the decision to produce the show was driven by a desire to better serve fans of the hit Hulu comedy. 'These short-form series offer fans a peek behind the curtain to hear directly from the talented people that bring the show to life,' she says. 'And for our creators, this is a meaningful way to share more with the fans, give insight into their work, share some entertaining — and often hilarious — behind-the-scenes stories, and also spotlight some of the critical crew members that make every episode of the show so special.' To 'The Last of Us' viewers, there was likely no bigger moment this season than 'Through the Valley,' the jaw-dropping second episode. Fans looking for insights on how that action-packed tragic set piece was orchestrated had to look no further than 'Inside Episode 2,' where director Mark Mylod, co-creator Craig Mazin and star Pedro Pascal spoke about shooting Joel's untimely and quite gruesome death. Boasting more than 710,000 views on YouTube alone, that featurette showcased both the artistry behind such a high-octane hour of television (with talk of prosthetics and wintry shooting conditions) and candid reflections from cast members about the emotional fallout the episode would undoubtedly create. The history of this Emmy category alone tracks the increased investment from streamers and networks in this kind of programming. Past nominees have included behind-the-scenes series tied to everything from '30 Rock' and 'American Horror Story' to 'RuPaul's Drag Race' and 'Pose.' And the last two winners ('Succession: Controlling the Narrative' and 'Shōgun — The Making of Shōgun') prove that the industry is similarly invested in (and impressed with) them, in turn. John Wilhelmy, Emmy-nominated creative director of 'Hacks: Bit by Bit,' notes that short-form projects now must be produced so they can exist across different platforms. 'Certain stories within the conversation lend themselves well to TikTok and [Instagram] Reels, so we'll pick those out and optimize them editorially,' he says. 'They're often funny outtakes or quick stories that we'll post on those platforms alongside the full-length episodes hitting HBO Max and YouTube.' In an era where fan-driven episode recaps, YouTube reaction videos and TikTok explainers contribute greatly to a show's success in an increasingly fractured media ecosystem, these projects suggest a way to positively harness that engagement in a way that still puts TV creators front and center. Echeverria puts it more simply: 'Fan-made content has a huge place, but there's nothing like seeing how the sauce is made from the chefs themselves.'

Why Jeff Probst Finally Let Mike White Return to ‘Survivor' (and if He'd Make a ‘White Lotus' Cameo)
Jeff Probst would be lying if he said he didn't know Mike White being cast on the 50th season of Survivor was going to cause such a commotion. Still, the host and executive producer admits he 'was a little surprised at how much attention' the news drew in when CBS unveiled its slate of returning players. 'The thing that's most interesting about Mike playing for the second time is there is no hiding that he is the biggest writer, director, show creator in the world right now, and he wanted to come back and play Survivor,' Probst tells The Hollywood Reporter. (Not to mention, he stepped away to compete on Survivor right in the middle of Emmys campaign season.) Probst knows that 'some people are really excited to see him play,' whereas most of his A-list peers 'can't believe he said yes.' Instead of posing the question, 'Why would you go do it?' the host thinks people 'should be asking, 'Why are you doing it?'' 'I'm surprised people aren't asking, 'Why is one of the greatest writers in the history of Hollywood so interested in Survivor?'' he says. 'What is it that Mike is learning about humans and behavior and situational ethics that he applies to his craft? Because I think that's part of why he does it — he's out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what's going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play Survivor, you can study it. 'And when you watch White Lotus, what are you watching? You're watching human behavior all day. I think that's part of the reason Mike is back, and if you don't understand that, maybe you're asking the wrong question,' Probst adds. Like his career in the entertainment industry, The White Lotus creator had an impressive run on the show's 37th season that aired in 2018. Entitled David vs. Goliath, Mike was labeled the latter (due to his profession), and finished as runner-up a mere three years before White Lotus hit TV screens with season one. And he isn't the only one making a reality TV homecoming on the show, as Survivor 50, which airs in the spring of 2026, enlists a cast of former Survivor players. (Survivor 49 premieres Sept. 24.) White will compete against a few fellow second placers and even two winners — though his competitors aren't behind a 66-time Emmy-nominated series, making him an obvious outlier that Probst says will be 'fun' to watch play out. 'What's really going to be fun is to watch Mike integrate with these people that he knows in his study,' he adds. 'He wanted to come back and step away from his Hollywood career for a moment and play this game that he loves to see how it will go. 'Now that everybody is more aware of me now that I'm a little more successful, how will I fare?'' It will be interesting to see how the players react to White on Survivor 50, because, truthfully speaking, who wouldn't want to be responsible for his exit from the show? That could surely win a player the whole season. His Emmy-winning status will either greatly harm or help him, with some fans speculating the latter as he notoriously invites contestants from his season to appear in cameos on White Lotus. Forget fabricating the master plan to kick White off the Survivor island — if you form a close enough bond with him, you could land yourself a small role in his show. (Natalie Cole, Carl Boudreaux and Christian Hubicki are some of the Survivor alums who had brief White Lotus cameos.) Probst doesn't say if any castaways catered to the writer-director for a cameo in the already renewed season four, but he does assert that he wouldn't want to appear in the show himself (even when asked if he'd be interested in doing so if the upcoming season was set in Fiji). 'No, Mike should never put me on White Lotus,' Probst argues, while still admiring the experience he offers Survivor alumni. 'I really love the cameos and how he uses people. And I think that, too, speaks to Mike as a person,' he notes. 'He's able to be one of the Hollywood elite, in terms of show creators, but he's also able to do the show with people who are not from Hollywood, and then invite them into his world and say, 'Why don't you come experience what it's like to be on the set of White Lotus for a day?' and, 'I'm going to put you in the seat.' That's incredible confidence and incredible generosity of spirit.' White once said 'now that Probst knows I can get to the end [of Survivor], I don't think he wants there to be a chance of that happening again,' so what changed? It appears to be his public campaign to return to Survivor, combined with the fact that, well, everyone wants to see what The White Lotus creator is going to accomplish on his second go-around. After years of stubbornly turning him down, Probst finally had a change of heart, and he's 'so grateful' White agreed to return for Survivor 50. 'He's arguably the single best storyteller we've ever had on Survivor,' Probst adds. 'Mike is one of the most peculiar and loving people I've ever met. He's so authentic. He does exactly what he wants on his terms, and the results clearly speak for themselves. And honestly, I'm grateful to consider him a friend, because I learn from Mike every day. You're talking [about] one of the best of all time, and the fact that he said yes to Survivor still brings a smile on my face.'
