Ibiza venue cancels music events after deaths of two British men in two weeks
Gary Kelly, 19, who played for the Dundee Stars ice hockey team, died at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel on Monday. His club paid tribute to the 'hugely talented and charismatic individual', adding he 'had a great future ahead of him'.
It comes weeks after the death of another Scottish tourist, Evan Thomson, 26, who fell to his death at the hotel in July.
The hotel, which is also an open-air music venue, has decided to pause its scheduled events programme due to 'the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved'.
It said: 'We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred.
'Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations.
'The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority.'
Rapper Dizzee Rascal was due to play later this week and drum'n'bass band Rudimental were expected to appear on 30 July. The hotel has not specified how many events it will be cancelling.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.'
The Dundee Stars said: 'We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary's family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.
'Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken to hear this tragic news.
'Gary was hugely talented and charismatic individual who had a great future ahead of him. His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be sadly missed.
'We respect and support the family's request for privacy at this extremely difficult time.'
Other UK ice hockey teams also paid tribute to Kelly. In a statement on X, the Glasgow Clan said: 'This is truly heartbreaking news. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident during this incredibly difficult time.'
The Whitley Warriors, who Kelly played for briefly, said: 'Gary iced for Warriors on only a few occasions in the 2023-24 season but was a popular player in the dressing room despite the shortness of his time at Whitley.'
Thomson's mother paid tribute to her son in a social media post. 'I'm absolutely heartbroken to write and tell you all, earlier this week my son Evan was in a tragic accident whilst on holiday with his friends in Ibiza and sadly passed away,' she wrote, adding: 'We are all absolutely broken.'

Two women killed and teenager hurt in three-vehicle crash
Two women have died and a teenage girl has been hurt in a three-vehicle crash on the A96 in Moray. The collision, which happened at around 3pm on Monday, involved two cars and an HGV on the A96 at the junction of Kingloss Road in Forres, Moray, Police Scotland said. The two women, aged 48 and 56, who were travelling in a black-coloured Vauxhall Mokka, died at the scene, officers said. A 15-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the Vauxhall, was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where she is being treated for her injuries. The driver of the HGV and occupants of a VW Golf were uninjured, the force confirmed. Detectives said the A96 at Forres is set to remain closed for several hours and motorists have been urged to avoid the area. Sergeant Lesley Morrison at Road Policing in Elgin said: 'We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this tragic crash or anyone who has dashcam footage of it.' We're Benidorm superfans – we've spent 5-figure sum in seven years… here's the reasons it's the best place to holiday
IT was the home of the beloved British comedy for over a decade, but to Mark and Karen Gregory, Benidorm is no joke. The superfans of the Spanish town have holidayed there 25 times. 5 5 The couple, both 50, have spent over £30,000 in the last seven years sunning themselves in Benidorm, located in Costa Blanca, after falling in love with it during their first visit in 2018. And the pair, from Swansea, now have no plans to holiday elsewhere ever again, despite anti-tourism protests in some Spanish resorts. Mark says: 'We used to go to Majorca and the Canaries, until we spotted a deal for a trip to Benidorm one day. 'We thought we'd try it for a week and we were so pleasantly surprised that my wife started looking for accommodation to go again as soon as we got home. 'It's the very best place to holiday. "The people who have bad opinions about it have never been. 'We aren't big drinkers but enjoy the budget alcohol. "The pints are 80 cents and bottles of cava are €2.' The couple often return to the same haunts every time they visit — enjoying a pint at the Western Saloon, dinner at Country Ribs or Kathmandu curry house, and cocktails at the Hotel California Beach Club. 'Stag groups zigzag home at 6am' They even love seeing the same Meat Loaf tribute act, often referred to as 'Meatloaf Benidorm', at venue Jokers. 'Yes, you get your typical beer-bellied Brits abroad, but there is a much nicer, quieter side too. "We mainly go outside of the peak season as it's much cheaper, but there's entertainment all year round. 'People do have their own opinions of Benidorm and it is a bit of a 'Marmite' resort — but lots fall in love with it and we can see why.' The couple enjoy the year-round nightlife, particularly the live music, tribute and drag acts. And they love it so much they've visited 25 times since late 2018 — barring the pandemic lockdowns — having spent over £30,000 at various resorts in the town. Mark said: 'We mainly stick to the winter but we've been in May a couple of times. " In winter it can be nearly 40 per cent cheaper — not just to get there, but at the bars and restaurants too. 'And there is still so much to do — you never get bored.' The couple say they avoid the spots frequented by large stag dos and hen parties. Karen said: 'We know the spots to avoid. 'Simply the best' "But we do still occasionally see the stag groups zigzagging home at 6am. 'There's plenty of mad behaviour to see sometimes — and plenty of people passed out on benches.' But they find lots of quieter locations to enjoy their evenings. 5 5 Some of their favourite nights out have been to see a Pink Floyd tribute act, a Tom Jones tribute and a comedian called Tony Scott. The couple largely stay in a self-catered apartment which they visit several times a year — and get a discount because of their loyalty, which keeps costs low so they can afford more visits. But they don't mind, as all the local produce is better quality for their home-cooked meals. Mark explains: 'We do sometimes go for meals but Karen is coeliac so it's not that easy. 'The supermarkets are much better than in England and there are so many gluten-free options for us.' The couple say that since discovering their love for Benidorm they have only holidayed elsewhere once, in Tenerife. But nothing compared to their beloved Benidorm, so they have decided to forget further travel elsewhere. Mark says: 'There are times we think we might be 'Benidormed out'. 'But then we realise it doesn't compare to anywhere else. And when we go, it just gets better and better.' They now have no plans to visit elsewhere, and live a frugal life at home so they can afford their £6,000-per-year trips. Mark added: 'Whenever we go back there are new places that have opened, but we like the familiarity. 'If we go to a new place it takes a few days to find our feet, whereas going here, it's like coming home.' He added: 'People do have their own opinions, but I don't like it when people share derogatory views about it when they've never been. 'If you've never tried it, and you've just watched the TV show or read about it, don't just jump on the bandwagon. Benidorm is quite simply the best.'

Dublin woman who took hospital prescription pad to get tablets is jailed
A woman who took half a pad of prescriptions from a Dublin hospital which she later used to make fake prescriptions for sleeping tablets has been jailed for 18 months. Kym Dunleavy (50) St Josephs Place, Dublin 7, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to multiple charges of using a false instrument, a medical prescription which she knew to be false, on various dates between November 2018 and April 2019. Advertisement She has 71 previous convictions, mostly for theft and fraud offences. Keith Spencer BL, defending, told the court at a previous court hearing, that his client 'suffered unimaginable trauma' over the years, including the fact that her mother was murdered by her (Dunleavy's) brother, two of her brothers were shot dead and her son was killed while he was working with the British Armed Forces. Garda Joseph Melvin told Fiona Crawford BL, prosecuting, at that same hearing that gardaí were contacted after one particular pharmacy raised concerns that a customer had used a false prescription in an attempt to purchase medication. Dunleavy was identified as a suspect after gardaí viewed CCTV footage from the pharmacy. They later secured a warrant to search her home where a prescription pad from Beaumont Hospital was found under a mattress. Advertisement Gardaí spoke to the head pharmacist in Beaumont Hospital who confirmed that while Dunleavy had previously been a patient there, she had not attended the hospital for a number of years. The pharmacist confirmed that they were forgeries but said the prescription pad was legitimate. Gda Melvin agreed with Mr Spencer that Dunleavy told gardaí during interview that she had 'behaved rather badly' and had taken the pad from Beaumont. She said she had approached her GP because the one sleeping tablet she had previously been prescribed was not enough to deal with her anxiety. Dunleavy told gardaí that the anxiety was 'coming noon and night – horrific visions from my past that were prone to surface at night'. She said the sleeping tablets assisted her as she would 'just sleep and when I wake there are no horrors'. Advertisement Dunleavy told gardaí that the doctor increased her prescription to two tablets but it was still not enough and she used the forged prescriptions to get more tablets. 'I am exceptionally drained from this. I have visions of my mother's murder – they are frightening,' Dunleavy said before she told gardaí she had put 'a brave face' on her addiction for a long time. 'I was not raised to be this person,' Dunleavy told gardaí. Mr Spencer told the court that Dunleavy's brother was murdered in 2005 and her mother was murdered by Dunleavy's other brother in 2013. Her sister also died giving birth and Dunleavy had helped to care for that baby. Advertisement Counsel said Dunleavy's son had died while on tour with the British Armed Forces. Mr Spencer said since this offence Dunleavy has managed to self-detox but has isolated herself from the local community in order to achieve this. She hopes to get back into community once she has got a handle on her addiction. Mr Spencer said his client had been referred to the psychiatric services but she has not followed up on it. Judge Orla Crowe said that Dunleavy has a considerable history of offending and a probation report puts her at high risk of re-offending. Advertisement She said however, there are 'certain positives' in Dunleavy's life, including that she has no convictions since 2021 and she no longer abuses prescribed medication. Judge Crowe noted that Dunleavy has not followed through on referrals to psychiatric services nor has she properly engaged with the Probation Service, even though the service has indicated that Dunleavy would benefit from probation supervision. She noted that the maximum penalty for the offence was 10 years before she said because of the 'considerable amount of time that has since passed' she felt a headline sentence of two and half years would be appropriate. Judge Crowe said taking the mitigation in the case into account she would impose a sentence of 18 months in prison. Dunleavy said the prison term was 'disgraceful' and 'ridiculous' as she was escorted away by prison officers.
