Egypt's FM meets with Head of UN Security Council Reform Negotiations
CAIRO – 11 May 2025: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty received Ambassador Tariq Albanai, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations in New York and Head of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council Reform, on Sunday, May 11, in Cairo.
Minister Abdelatty praised Kuwait's leadership in chairing the IGN process over the past years and during the current session of the UN General Assembly. He also expressed appreciation for Ambassador Albanai's visit to Cairo as part of his regional tour.
Reaffirming Egypt's firm position on the need to reform the UN Security Council, the Minister stressed that Egypt's stance is rooted in the unified African position as outlined in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration, as well as the core principles of the Arab position on the matter.
Minister Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt's support for the efforts of the African Union's "Committee of Ten," chaired by Sierra Leone, which is mandated with promoting and defending Africa's common position in the ongoing negotiations for Security Council reform.

Egypt sets rules for foreign delegations visiting Gaza border
Egypt has announced regulatory controls for foreign delegations wishing to visit the border area with the Gaza Strip, stating that prior approval must be obtained through official channels. In a Wednesday statement, the government said the only way it would consider such requests is through a formal application to an Egyptian embassy abroad, or via requests submitted by foreign embassies in Cairo or representatives of organisations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It said that no requests or invitations received outside this specified framework would be considered. The statement emphasised the importance of adhering to these regulations to ensure the security of visiting delegations, citing the delicate security situation in the border region since the beginning of the crisis in Gaza. It noted that many visits for foreign government and non-governmental delegations had been arranged previously under this process. The government also stressed the importance for citizens of all countries to adhere to the laws and regulations governing entry into Egyptian territory, including obtaining the necessary visas or permits. In the statement, Egypt said it welcomes international and regional positions that support Palestinian rights and reject what it described as the 'siege, starvation, and flagrant and systematic Israeli violations' against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. It affirmed that Egypt continues to work at all levels to end the war on the Strip and the humanitarian disaster affecting more than two million Palestinians. The statement reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast position in support of the Palestinian people on their land and its rejection of Israeli violations of international law and international humanitarian law. It also stressed the importance of pressuring Israel to end the siege on the Strip and allow humanitarian access through all land crossings from Israel.

123 Palestinians killed in 24hrs as UN experts accuse Israel of genocide in Gaza
At least 123 Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours as Israeli military operations continued across the Gaza Strip, amid mounting international accusations that Israel is committing crimes against humanity. In a report released on Tuesday, United Nations experts accused Israel of conducting 'a systematic campaign to erase Palestinian life,' citing the targeting of civilians sheltering in schools and places of worship. According to Gaza's Civil Defense, 31 people were killed on Wednesday morning by Israeli fire while attempting to reach a food distribution centre. Similar incidents have claimed dozens of lives near aid points run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation since late May, according to the Red Cross and local emergency services. Gaza's Government Media Office accused Israel of deliberately fostering chaos through starvation and of 'directly targeting starving civilians using drones, helicopters, and tanks.' On the diplomatic front, Israel's Channel 12 reported on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to 'end the war now' during a phone call held Monday evening. Citing unnamed sources, the channel said Trump used unusually strong language, telling Netanyahu: 'I want you to end the war.' In a bid to ease the escalating crisis, Netanyahu stated in a video posted to his Telegram account on Tuesday that 'significant progress' had been made in negotiations with Hamas over a potential prisoner exchange. Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi dismissed Netanyahu's remarks as 'deception,' accusing him of misleading the Israeli public and obstructing a genuine deal that could secure the release of captives. Mediated talks, led by Qatar and Egypt, are ongoing in Doha, though prospects for a ceasefire remain uncertain amid conflicting signals from the parties involved. On the ground, fighting persisted in southern Gaza. The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, also claimed responsibility for the sniper killing of an Israeli soldier in the nearby town of Abasan al-Kabira. Israeli media reported heavy combat in the area, with the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation confirming that four soldiers were wounded in separate incidents during the latest battles. Two were injured when an anti-tank missile struck a tank from the 74th Armoured Battalion, while two others were wounded in a separate shooting.
