Six candidates to replace Jim Knowles as Ohio State defensive coordinator
In case you missed the news of the day, a day in which the Ohio State football team celebrated its 2024 College Football Playoff national championship, it appears as though OSU defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles is leaving the program for Penn State. It's a blow, especially when a coach of his pedigree heads to a Big Ten rival right after a day to remember what he meant to the Scarlet and Gray.
So, now, head coach Ryan Day will be tasked with finding a replacement during a time when there are a thousand other things going on, and when some candidates have already been gobbled up while the Buckeyes were finishing up a late run toward college football glory. It's anyone's guess where this thing will go, but we thought we'd throw out six names that might be on Day's wish list as he begins the search for a very, very important post on the coaching staff in Columbus.
Put an asterisk next to this thing and don't think it's a list that Day is utilizing himself, because, as we've seen, sometimes the hires come off the radar and even make a bigger splash than what we can think of. Remember, Bill O'Brien came out of nowhere, and so too did Chip Kelly when he was looking for an offensive coordinator.
Still, here are some names that make sense.

Ruckert was asked by the New York media what it means to be playing with his college teammate again, and was excited more for the team than himself. "Any time you get a chance to reconnect with one of your teammates, whether it's in the League or college, it's great,: Ruckert told reporters. "I'm excited where we're going as a team and the culture we're setting, and I think he's (Fields) perfect for that role, and just these last couple of weeks to get back on the same page and get our timing right with all the guys. It's been special to be a part of that, but also kind of get the other guys rolling and continue to grow as a unit." If you are an Ohio State fan, there aren't too many storylines that jump out more than what Fields does in New York. If he can use his athletic gifts the right way and still find a way to stay poised and present in the pocket, we could see a budding star coming to light just a little later than we thought. Class of 2026 five-star offensive tackle and Oklahoma target Felix Ojo is nearing a decision amid a busy official visit schedule. Advertisement Ojo (6-foot-7, 275 pounds) plays for Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield, Texas. He is rated as the No. 3 offensive tackle, the No. 1 player in the state, and the No. 6 overall recruit (On3 industry). Ojo, who holds an On3 NIL valuation of $758,000, announced in February his top eight schools: Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame. Ojo loaded his summer with visits, also including trips outside of his top schools. Notre Dame unofficially hosted Ojo on April 10 before he took official trips to Ole Miss (April 18), Texas Tech (April 25), Colorado (May 2), Florida (May 16) and Ohio State (May 30). The Oklahoma visit has been cancelled, as Ojo revealed that his decision is approaching sooner than previously expected. 'Not needed," Ojo said via On3's Hayes Fawcett. "Nearing my decision a lot sooner than later." It's unclear if Ojo's decision has closed the door for Oklahoma in his recruitment, but the Sooners would have likely benefited from getting the highly coveted recruit on campus. Advertisement Texas stands, for now, as the last program to get an official visit from Ojo this summer. Head coach Steve Sarkisian's Longhorns signed the nation's top class in the 2025 cycle and have been linked to the in-state recruit for some time. Ojo previously named the SEC powerhouse as his leader in May, and he is projected to ultimately land at Texas, according to recruiting experts from On3, 247Sports and Rivals. WATCH: Ohio State football player, staffer compete in three-point shooting contest In case you haven't noticed, the Ohio State football program is passing the time during a slow summer by competing in some "June Olympics." It's a competition of different athletic competitions between the OSU staff and the players, and so far it's been a hoot to watch it all go down. The staff got out to an early lead, but the players won three events in a row to take a 3-1 lead before the older guys trimmed the lead to 3-2. And now, after the latest event, a three-point shooting contest between OSU staffer Matt Guerrieri and wide receiver Bryson Rodgers, things are all tied up. That's because Guerrieri battled through some suspect shots to bury the one that mattered, giving the staff the win and even the competition at 3-3. If you missed any of the action, get a look at the cliff notes version of what went down on the courts of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
