From draft day doubts to Phillies' Wall of Fame: Jimmy Rollins' journey puts him with team greats
So when the Philadelphia Phillies called in 1996 to tell the slick-fielding shortstop they had picked him in the second round of the draft, Rollins had one major question.
'I'm like, 'Who?' ' Rollins said with a laugh.
Yes, the Phillies, one of the worst organizations in baseball throughout the late 1990s — and one Rollins turned into a perennial winner.
Rollins led the Phillies to five straight NL East titles, the 2008 World Series championship, and another NL pennant the next year. He was the 2007 NL MVP, a three-time All-Star, had a 38-game hitting streak and set the franchise record for hits with 2,306.
He had one more major franchise accolade to accomplish.
Rollins at last took his place with Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton and was inducted Friday night into the Phillies' Wall of Fame.
'I was meant to be here,' Rollins said. 'I got drafted here. I told my mom when we got drafted, I'm going to win a championship in this city. That's what it became about for me, was chasing that championship.'
The core of that Phillies' run — five division titles from 2007-2011 on the strength of homegrown talent such as Rollins, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels and Chase Utley — was built by former general manager Ed Wade. Wade, who helped move the organization into Citizens Bank Park in 2004, received his spot on the Wall with Rollins on Friday night.
Howard inducted Rollins into the team's version of the Hall of Fame, saying the team leaned on him for the contagious confidence that made the Phillies the team to beat in the NL for so many years.
'You go, we go,' Howard told the crowd. 'Jimmy always went.'
Utley pulled down the coverings that unveiled the Rollins and Wade plaques on the wall that greets fans in the left field concourse behind the scoreboard building.
Rollins, who finished his career with stints with the Dodgers and the White Sox, earned just 18% of the Hall of Fame vote in last year's ballot, falling short of the 75% needed for election. Wade said Rollins' numbers compared to some of the great shortstops already in Cooperstown.
'This guy, from the standpoint of character, makeup and talent, he's a Hall of Famer in all three of those things,' Wade said. 'There are some guys in Cooperstown that may check one or two of those boxes. This guy checks all three of those boxes. I understand the statistical aspect of it. Defense, check his box. Speed, check his box. I don't know what criteria you would have to follow to not have Jimmy Rollins in the Hall of Fame.'

'I mean, I know roughly, but I just need to go play some good golf and put myself where I'm in a position and have a chance to go win on Sunday.' Fowler, who is projected to improve to No. 48, is one of two players who is on target to move into the top 50 along with Bud Cauley, who made eight birdied to shoot 6-under 64 and share second after the first round. 'I drove it in the fairway, which is nice,' Cauley said. 'You have to be in the fairway. The rough is impossible.' Cauley has had a resurgent season with four top 10's and eight top 25s. He entered the week at No. 53 in the points race and is projected to leap to No. 22. How much is making the BMW and the perks that come with it – entry into all eight signature events next season – been on his mind? 'I'd love to be there and love to play, but I have to take care of this week first,' he said. Two players moving in, of course, means two players had to move out. Jake Knapp, who entered the week at No. 47, had a rollercoaster day. His five birdies were canceled out by five bogeys. He also made a double bogey en route to 2-over 72. He's projected to drop to No. 54. Australian Min Woo Lee wasn't cooking on Thursday. He shot 6-over 76 and was dead last in the field of 69. He entered the week as the 'Bubble Boy' at No. 50. Ke'Bryan Hayes returns to Pittsburgh after being traded to the playoff-chasing Reds
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ke'Bryan Hayes said he thought he might be in Pittsburgh to stay before the Pirates traded him July 30 to NL Central rival Cincinnati. He returned to Pittsburgh on Thursday for the first time since he was dealt, with the Pirates opening a four-game series against the Reds. Hayes' future with the Pirates looked secure after he signed a $70 million, eight-year contract in 2022. 'The reason I signed the contract here in Pittsburgh, I wanted to be here and maybe play here my whole career,' Hayes said. 'But baseball's a business at the end of the day.' The Gold Glove third baseman went from an organization that was well outside the playoffs race to a Reds team competing for a wild-card spot. Pittsburgh was 49-66 heading into Thursday's game and last in the division; Cincinnati was 60-55 and three games out of a playoff spot. 'It's been great over here," Hayes said. 'They've welcomed me with big arms. We're in playoff contention.' Hayes, the son of former major leaguer Charlie Hayes and a first-round draft pick by the Pirates in 2015, struggled to find consistency at the plate following his splashy debut during the final month of the COVID-19-shortened season in 2020. He hit .376 with five homers in 24 games immediately after being called up, numbers that he didn't come close to matching while playing a full 162-game schedule. View more Video Transcript So much of the Vikings' season is riding on how quickly JJ McCarthy plays well. What did you see out of their young quarterback this camp and what amounts to what's going to be his rookie year? Well, I'll tell you what, you know, Justin Jefferson wasn't on the field when I was there, right? He was sitting out, obviously nursing, you know, an injury that he's been going through, and you know, Jordan Addison was the guy that, you know, JJ McCarthy was dialed in on in practice. Now we know that Jordan Addison's going to be suspended the first 3 games of the season. Not perfect in training camp in terms of having your best player out there for McCarthy to continue to work on chemistry with, knowing that you're going to take away a high-level #2 receiver the first 3 games, you know, of your season. So much of this though, just like it was last season with Sam Darnold, so much of this is going to be focused through JJ McCarthy. And I'll say this, like, I think they have not spared throwing a lot at him defensively with Brian Flores. I don't think they've pulled back the dogs in practice, OK? I think they have gone after him, and at times, I think, you know, people have looked at it and said, man, JJ looks like he's struggling a little bit. Man, he's a little bit of a roller coaster right now, in his preseason. We forget, it was at the beginning of his preseason last year, and then he went out in a couple of exhibition games that looked really, really good. And all of a sudden we're like, hmm, when I talked to Kevin O'Connell. He said, look, we're not, we're not trying to give him easy days. We're not trying to throw him softballs out there. We're not worried about his confidence. He's a very confident guy, confident kid. They feel like he's got natural leadership capabilities, and they haven't seen him break in practice. What are the expectations in their building really? Because I look at that team and I say, this roster is loaded, and if JJ McCarthy hits his ceiling and, fairly quickly, he's got to do that right away. I don't see why the Vikings can't be a Super Bowl contender. They really were last year. They went 14 and 3. I look at that roster, I'm like, this is one of the best rosters in the NFL. Am I wrong about that? Like, and how do they feel within the building about their expectations this year? No, I, I think you're, you're absolutely right. It's still one of the best rosters in the NFL, um, particularly, look, if it's healthy, it's clearly one of the best, um, offenses in the NFL from the skill position standpoint, um, but I don't want to say they have tempered expectations. I think they know we have a young quarterback, right? And, and there can be some growing pains as we go through turning JJ McCarthy into what we ultimately believe he can be. Close
