2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Midcycle Change Is All About Tunes

2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Midcycle Change Is All About Tunes

Yahoo24-02-2025

Mitsubishi hopes to increase its fairly small share of the enormous midsize crossover utility segment with some midcycle upgrades on its 2025 Outlander.
The crossover has a little more than 10% of the sales numbers of segment leaders like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Tesla Model Y.
The most exciting upgrade might be the new Yamaha audio system, which rocks.
The Mitsubishi Outlander was already a solid entry in the midsize crossover utility segment, with enough quilted leather inside to make you think you stepped up a class or two—or even three—despite the ute's Nissan Rogue underpinnings and powertrain.
But no Rogue ever looked this nice inside, and with the 2025 midcycle facelift you see here, no Rogue is ever going to get the killer Yamaha audio you can have in the 2025 Outlander.
Now, you may have to pause a bit to recall the Outlander. It competes—sort of—in the ginormous midsize crossover segment but lags well behind more popular rivals.
There are 38 models competing there, from the Buick Envision to the Volkswagen Tiguan, including mega-sellers like the Honda CR-V at 402,791 sales in calendar 2024, Tesla Model Y at 375,898, and Toyota RAV4 at 475,193.
Compared to those, the under-the-radar Outlander's 52,228 sales in 2024 were downright diminutive.
The Outlander debuted in 2022, but its 2025 midcycle facelift brings a really nice sound system from Yamaha that may tip the sales scales in Mitsu's favor.
The company estimates that 10% of buyers are swayed by a vehicle's audio system, and this one may do some swaying. Available in two packages, Premium and Ultimate, the system is impressive just on the spec sheet before you even crank it up.
The Premium 1,000-watt package gets eight speakers: four tweeters, two "wooden" midrange speakers, and two woofers. Step up to Ultimate audio and you get 12 speakers with 11 channels hitting 1,650 watts.
Engineers turned the doors in the Outlander into speakers by blocking off the service access holes with resin plates to repurpose each door into a speaker box.
On top of that there are five modes: Lively, Signature, Powerful, Relaxing, and Surround Sound. To tune each audio experience to the vehicle's occupants, there are five "Listening Positions" that focus the sound appropriately: Driver, Front Seat, Rear seat, and all-seat modes. Then there are three means to compensate for noise: Speed Compensation, Rain Compensation, and Air Conditioning Compensation. While driving through LA streets and freeways, it was an impressive system, indeed. An easy way to gauge the robustness of a sound system is simply to crank the volume and see if it comes apart.
The Yamaha Ultimate system could hold distinct definition in all ranges at even the highest volumes. That definition was obvious at any output level. I gave it two ear lobes up.
They didn't let us try out the Premium sound one notch down, nor compare it to last year's Bose system, but the Ultimate may be worth investing in, especially since there are few places outside a college dorm room or the car where you can fully crank the audio like Otto Mann the bus driver on The Simpsons.
The rest of the midcycle changes are fairly standard. The front end gets all-new sheetmetal from the A-pillar forward, with fenders now made of steel instead of last year's plastic, for better fitment. The rear end is likewise refreshed.
Inside the two-row crossover you'll find an updated interior, with a new center console design "more focused around ease of use and comfort," new interior colors, and upgraded features.
The quilted leather trim throughout is a nice touch. The Mitsubishi Connect got a little clunky when using Apple Maps to navigate. I had to manually restart it after every travel segment instead of just hitting the "Continue" button on the screen.
But overall people have been happy with the current Outlander.
"For the first time ever, the Mitsubishi Outlander has won the small/compact segment in the JD Power 2024 US Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study," Mitsu crowed last year, and that was before the Yamaha sound system arrived.
For my part, I was satisfied after a day spent driving and riding around Los Angeles. The Outlander is a comfortable conveyance from which to conduct your daily urban or suburban life.
Road noise underway was minimal over LA's sometimes bumpy pavement, and engine noise from the 2.5-liter MIVEC DOHC inline four-cylinder was minimal.
Acceleration with the four-banger's 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque was more than enough to get the 3,803-pound crossover crossing over, though no 0-60 mph time was listed.
Peak power doesn't arrive until 6,000 rpm, but it didn't feel lacking at lower revs. Likewise, you might not even know you're driving a CVT, as its performance never intruded on the experience throughout the drive. Maybe I wasn't pushing it hard enough.
While the firewall, suspension pickup points, and basic chassis are shared with the Rogue, the Outlander gets its own springs, shocks, anti-roll bars, and 20-inch wheels, with the springs, shocks, and bars tuned specifically for this upscale, semi-sporty application.
I did not get a chance to take the Outlander off-road, but with a new Trail Edition Outlander coming out later this year, I'm looking forward to it.
There will also be an updated Outlander PHEV late this year or early next, Mitsubishi said. For now, the newest and coolest Outlander is this one.
How does it stack up against the sales leaders in the segment? The RAV4 also sports a 2.5-liter four but manages to get 203 hp out of it, 22 more than the Mitsu, routing that power through an eight-speed automatic instead of a CVT.
The Honda CR-V makes do with a full liter less displacement, yet manages to outperform the Mitsubishi with 190 hp, albeit with a CVT. And the Tesla Model Y beats everything in the class with 295 all-electric hp and all-wheel drive, but for 20 grand more across the board.
The Mitsubishi offers a handsome interior and a killer sound system, with what is mostly adequate vehicle performance.
That and the promising JD Power numbers suggest 2025 could be the year Mitsubishi rises up in the very crowded midsize crossover segment.
Does a killer stereo really make a difference in this class? Let us know below.

The 15 Compact SUVs With the Most Cargo Room

Cargo Space Seats Up/Down: 11.7-30.8 (33.5 w/ third-row folded)/64.7-79.7 cu ft | MT Score: 7.9/8.7 You've no doubt seen that 11.7-cubic-feet figure for the Mitsubishi Outlander and are wondering what the heck is going on. Well, dear friends, the standard Mitsubishi Outlander has one thing that no other vehicle on this list does: a standard two-person third row for little ones. With that third row in place, the seven-passenger Outlander only has a tiny 11.7 cubic feet of space, while it's plug-in hybrid variant (which uses the third row's space for a battery) has 30.8 cubic feet of space. We obviously didn't want to punish Mitsubishi for offering a feature others don't, and considering those third-row seats will most often be folded flat into the floor, we've placed it in eighth of our list of compact SUVs with the most cargo room due to the generous 33.5 cubic feet available behind the Outlander's second row. Aside from the third row, the Outlander is an interesting vehicle in its segment. Built on the same bones as the Nissan Rogue, it has a few unique features, such as its own engine (a bit underpowered), software suite (it's fine), and stereo ( love! ). Aside from the plenty of thoughtful storage solutions in the Outlanders, we're also quite fond of the Outlander PHEV due to its long electric range (38 miles) and the rare ability at this price point to be DC fast charged.

Digital Storage Can Assist Or Foil AI

Data Center In this article we will look at some resent announcerments on digital storage and its use in AI training and inference. But first, an example of digital storage technology used to save humanity. Data Storage Saves the Day Digital archiving startup SPhotonix's 5D memory crystal was an important element in the plot of the latest Mission Impossible movie. The 360TB memory crystal was used to stop a rogue AI from destroying the world. In practice, SPhotonix stores data using a FemtoEtch nano-etching technology on a 5-inch glass substrate. Note that I am an advisor for SPhotonix. SPhotonix 5D Memory Cystal Digital storage technologies have been used in many movies and TV shows over the years, such as the StorageTek Tape library used in the 1994 Film 'Clear and Present Danger.' Hybrid AI Data Centers In practice data centers are generally using SSDs as primary storage in data centers, including for AI training applications. SSDs provide fast storage for refreshing data on the high bandwidth memory located close to the GPUs that directly support data processing. However, the cost for storing data on SSDs in data centers is about 6X higher than storing it on HDDs. This leads data centers to use HDDs for storing colder but useful data in a hierarchical storage environment. Data is moved back and forth from various storage technologies to optimize the balance of cost versus performance. Ultimately archived information in data centers that is not frequently used is kept on magnetic tape cartridges or optical storage. Vdura, formerly veteran storage company, Panasas, recently announced a white paper on digital storage for AI workloads and announced changes in their hybrid SSD and HDD storage offering to support HPC and AI workloads. The company is now offering QLC NAND flash SSDs combined with high-capacity HDDs with their global namespace parallel file system combined with object storage, offering multi-level erasure coding and fast key value storage. The image below shows the layout of this hybrid SSD and HDD storage system. Vdura Global Namespace Storage The Vdura Data Platform V11.2 includes a preview of V-ScaleFlow that enables data movement across QLC flash and high-capacity hard drives. This allows resource utilization, maximizes system throughput and provides efficient AI-scale workloads. In particular the company is using Phison Pascari 128TB QLC NVMe SSD with 30+TB HDDs to reduce flash capacity requirements by over 50% and lowing power consumption. Overall total cost of ownership is said to be reduced by up to 60%. The Vdura white paper goes into details on data storage and memory utilization in an AI application. The figure below shows an AI data pipeline which should have the storage system enable minimum GPU downtime. AI Data Pipeline The table below goes into detail on read, write, performance and data size requirements for various elements in an AI workload. These various elements can require from GBs to PBs of digital storage with various performance requirements. This favors a combination of storage technologies to support different elements in this workload. Element Characteristics in an AI Workflow The below image shows a sample storage node that can provide all-flash or hybrid SSD and HDD storage to support AI and HPC workloads with a global namespace and a common control and data plane. Vdura Storage Node Digital storage technology saved the world from a rogue AI in the latest Mission Impossible Movie. Combining SSDs and HDDs can enable modern AI workloads that optimize cost and performance.

Hertz is selling Maserati SUVs for Toyota RAV4 prices. Here's how many are left You can score a used Maserati Grecale for cheaper than a fully loaded Toyota RAV4. Show Caption Hide Caption The view inside a Maserati MC20 breaking an autonomous speed record. A Maserati MC20 supercar breaks the autonomous vehicle speed record in March 2025 at NASA's Launch and Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center. Hertz is selling the Maserati Grecale for below market value. The Grecale is a recent addition to Maserati's portfolio and its most affordable model. The Maserati Grecale has impressive performance specs and a refined interior. Maserati vehicles are known for stylish exteriors, luxurious interiors, and incredible performance specs. Affordability isn't exactly synonymous with models from the Italian brand. Hertz is offering Maserati's newest SUV model for under $37,000, which is less than a new 2025 Toyota RAV4 Limited. The company is offering some models at extremely discounted rates compared to their actual market value. Is the Grecale worth considering at the prices Hertz is offering? Hertz is selling Maserati Grecale SUVs for under $40K So, why is it surprising that Hertz is selling Maserati Grecale models for under $40,000? The Grecale debuted as a 2023 small luxury SUV with a starting price of a whopping $63,500. While this pricing isn't mind-blowing for a Maserati luxury SUV, it's higher than what average Americans are spending on new cars (around $50,000), according to CNBC. Hertz has 29 Maserati Grecale small luxury SUVs for sale at the time of publishing. The most affordable of these Grecale SUVs starts at just $36,540 with under 29,000 miles according to the company's website. It's a 2023 base model, so it's being sold for slightly under 58% of its original MSRP. That's a depreciation rate of 42% in just a few years with low mileage. How much should you pay for a used Maserati Grecale? Getting a used Maserati Grecale is a great way to enjoy Maserati thrills without paying new Maserati prices. Kelley Blue Book's fair purchase price for a 2023 Maserati Grecale with under 29K miles from a dealer is $38,522. Its typical listing price is $39,222. So, you can score a Maserati Grecale for under market value if Hertz's prices are as advertised when the ink is dry on paperwork. That said, Hertz's Grecale models are located across the country and the company could tack on extra fees to the purchase, so take these prices with a grain of salt and do your own due diligence. 2026 Toyota RAV4 goes all-hybrid: New models, more power and bold design At a glance, Hertz is offering the Grecale small luxury SUV for attractive prices, but buyers should still take caution. Kelley Blue Book's typical listing price is a solid benchmark for what the SUV's true market value is. Why has the Grecale depreciated so much in so little time, and is it a good SUV? Is the Maserati Grecale a good SUV? The 2025 Maserati Grecale starts at $77,900. It uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to produce 325 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The small luxury SUV accelerates from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.0 seconds. It achieves 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway. The Grecale comes standard with all-wheel drive. Maserati's SUV features high-quality cabin materials and over 33 inches of display surfaces. Car and Driver praises the Grecale's "sporty yet comfortable ride ." Maserati's small luxury SUV offers an entry point to Maserati ownership for the average American car buyer. Heavily discounted used models are even more affordable, with a fair market value below the average price of new cars. The Grecale's rate of depreciation isn't uncommon in the luxury SUV vehicle class. So, Hertz's current Grecale offerings could be the perfect opportunity to get behind the wheel of one for interested parties.
