Rory McIlroy's ex-manager's 'terrible' comments on Tommy Fleetwood's caddie slammed

Daily Mirror19-07-2025
Claims that Tommy Fleetwood's caddie should take some blame for his Travelers Championship defeat have been rubbished by a member of Scottie Scheffler's coaching team
Rory McIlroy's former manager has been blasted for comments he made about Tommy Fleetwood's caddie. McIlroy and Fleetwood played together over the first two days at The Open Championship, with the home hero ending day two at under three under par, seven shots off the lead held by Scottie Scheffler, with Fleetwood two further back from his Ryder Cup team-mate.

The Englishman was hoping for a strong performance at Portrush to help erase the memory of his heartbreaking near miss at the Travelers Championship. Leading by three shots going into the final four, Fleetwood was on course for his maiden PGA Tour title.

However, he was overhauled by US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley after three-putting on the 18th to lose by just one shot. Following that gut-wrenching defeat, Andrew 'Chubby' Chandler, who represented McIlroy until 2011, took aim at Fleetwood's caddie Ian Finnis, blaming the bagman for his choice on the 72nd hole.

Per GolfMagic, Chandler said: "He should have won at the Travelers, shouldn't he? I'm not throwing Ian Finnis under the bus, but nobody looked at the caddie at all when he didn't win that last one.
"The caddie was half to blame. The caddie was involved in the decision-making. It was the wrong club at 18. It's funny, people gun for certain people, don't they? Finnis has escaped it. You think of the stick [McIlroy's caddie] Harry Diamond gets."
However, renowned putting coach Phil Kenyon, who has worked closely with Scheffler, has jumped to the defence of Finnis. He said: 'For Chubby to say that, it's just inaccurate. Tommy's won worldwide with Ian.

'If you look at Tommy's career with Ian, they've done a great job together. Ian has been on most of his wins, and under the extreme amount of pressure, you want someone that you can trust and rely on by your side.
"Tommy and Ian are a great fit. That is absolutely just a terrible statement from someone whose opinion I wouldn't trust anyway."

Kenyon also rubbished claims that putting is a weak point of Fleetwood's game, adding: "Tommy Fleetwood is a good putter. I think there's a really horrendous narrative around his putting, which is perpetuated by certain facets of the media which don't look at stats.
"They just listen to themselves and perpetuate their own narrative. But if you look at Tommy this year statistically, he's a better putter than he is a driver of the ball. He's in the top 35 on the PGA Tour."
"Now, anyone that's in that top 50 is a fantastic putter. You're talking about the top 50 players and the putters in the game. At times, I think, a very poor narrative in and around Tommy's putting. But all you've got to do is look at the analytics to indicate what the truth is."
Fleetwood has now recorded 42 top-10 finishes without winning on the PGA Tour. He's finished second twice in the majors and was also runner-up to Scheffler at the Olympics in Paris for Team GB last year.

England hope Ben Stokes benefits from a rest and bowls on Sunday

Having turned an overnight 77 into 141 for a first Test century in two years to propel England to 669 and a 311-run first-innings lead, Stokes was then conspicuously absent for the 63 overs India batted. He claimed five for 72 in India's first innings but restricted himself to fielding duties as Shubman Gill and KL Rahul helped the tourists recover from nought for two to 174 without further loss. A Ben Stokes 💯Wizz at the double 🔥Smashing six hundred 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 It's all in our Day 4 highlights 📺👇 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 26, 2025 Stokes has pushed himself to the limit this summer but there is a suspicion this is catching up with him, having struggled with cramp in his left leg when he was batting on Friday, briefly retiring hurt. Asked if he will be fit to bowl on the final day of the fourth Rothesay Test, with England looking to move into an unassailable 3-1 series lead, England assistant Marcus Trescothick said: 'We're hoping so. 'We're hoping another night's rest and physio work overnight that he'll be back. It's just a build-up (of things). He's had quite a big workload in the last few weeks. It's just trying to monitor it.' Stokes underwent surgery on his left hamstring at the start of the year, but he has already bowled the most overs he ever has in a series, even if he leads the wicket-taking charts with 16 at 24.75. He has proved his all-round worth in Manchester by becoming the fourth Englishman – after Tony Greig, Ian Botham and Gus Atkinson – to record a century and five-for in the same match. Ashes 2005-winning captain Michael Vaughan said on the BBC's Test Match Special: 'Ben is a super-human at times. He was probably hoping that they would get the wickets and he wasn't going to be required. 'Maybe the medical staff just said 'Ben, have a day off'.' Chris Woakes dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan with successive deliveries in the first over but Gill survived the hat-trick ball and overcame being dropped on 46 by Liam Dawson to reach 78 not out. KL Rahul is unbeaten on 87 to give India hope of avoiding defeat and setting up a decider at the Kia Oval next week but Trescothick remains upbeat about England's chances, with or without Stokes. Trescothick added: 'We've got 10 other guys who are capable of doing special things also. 'It's never great when bowlers go down or you don't have someone available to do the work you need them to do, it's then just up to everybody else to pick up the pieces and do the extra work.'

Lando Norris praises Scottie Scheffler after The Open winner's 'unfulfilled' comment

The Open Championship winner Scottie Scheffler caused a stir at Royal Portrush by claiming he is 'unfulfilled' by his extraordinary level of success at the top of the golf world Formula 1 title contender Lando Norris has spoken out in support of Scottie Scheffler after the golf superstar's eye-catching comments made at last weekend's The Open Championship. The American lifted the Claret Jug for the first time with a comfortable victory at Royal Portrush, winning by four strokes over nearest challenger Harris English. ‌ It was Scheffler's fourth Major win and 22nd professional tournament success, having dominated golf since his breakout year in 2022. He has now spent 150 consecutive weeks as the number one ranked golfer on the planet and is almost 300 points ahead of second-placed Rory McIlroy in the Official World Golf Ranking. ‌ Aged 29, Scheffler is already fourth on the list of all-time top earners from the PGA Tour, having won £67,725,863 in prize money alone during his relatively short career to date, and his trajectory has been compared to that of megastar Tiger Woods. Still, he made it clear when speaking to reporters at The Open that he feels there is something missing. ‌ Scheffler caught the eye by saying: "Look at this week, for example. What's the best-case scenario? I win this golf tournament, and then I'm going to show up in Memphis, and it's like, 'Okay, listen, you won two Majors this year, what are you going to do this week?' The show goes on. Sometimes the feeling of winning only lasts a few seconds. You work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament for a few minutes. It only lasts a few minutes, that kind of euphoric feeling. "To get to live out your dreams is very special, but at the end of the day, I'm not out here to inspire the next generation of golfers. I'm not out here to inspire someone to be the best player in the world because what's the point? This is not a fulfilling life. It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart." While those comments drew surprised reactions from many, they resonated with Norris. The McLaren racer is also a keen golfer in his spare time and, like Scheffler, has been open about his mental health ever since he first burst onto the scene in F1 back in 2019. ‌ "I quite liked what Scottie said," said the Brit, reflecting on his own short-lived high after winning his home race, the British Grand Prix, for the first time two weeks ago. "I respect that he's quite honest about his whole feelings about everything. It's just honest about what he wants. Not everyone has to say what everyone believes in and what everyone thinks should be correct or not correct. "I'm happy that someone that high up, achieving what he's done, he's performing to the same level that Tiger did in many circumstances. And that's pretty amazing to see him come out and say something like that. So I respect that a lot. And I related to a lot of it in many ways, which is cool. "It's not a bad attitude, it's just his own way of achieving what he achieved. And I think you have to respect something like that. I found it, I admired that kind of thing. I love golf... I still support Rory more than anyone, the Brits. I thought it was fascinating and cool to see someone performing at such an incredibly high level come out and just say what he did."
